It measures about 8,000 km from north to south and about 7,360 km from east to west. The highest point on the continent is Mt. Kilimanjaro - Uhuru Point - (5,963 m/19,340 ft) in Tanzania. The lowest is Lake 'Asal (153 m/502 ft below sea level) in Djibouti. The Forests cover about one-fifth of the total land area of the continent. World's second largest lake : Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the is the world's second-largest freshwater lake - covering an area of 69,490 sq km (26,830 sq mi) and lies 1,130 m (3,720 ft) above sea level. Its greatest known depth is 82 m (270 ft).

Mount Kilimanjaro, attaining an altitude of 6,000 meters, attracts hikers. The savannas are expected to become a great asset for tourism. On a safari you can have an experience of untouched nature with wild animals. Signs of westernization can be seen in urban areas. Coca Cola stalls and "The best pizza in Africa" advertisements tell about changing cuisine. Tanganyika was colonized by Germany from 1891 until World War II, and became a UK-administered United Nations protectorate after the war. The country became independent in 1961. Since 1964, when Tanganyika and Zanzibar were united, the country is called Tanzania. For a long time, Tanzania was realizing so called "African socialism" which included a comprehensive rural development programme called ujamaa. It should be remembered that socialism in Tanzania was not atheistic. The first multi-party elections were held in 1995. These elections did not, however, bring full democracy; the opposition and its activities have been disturbed here and there.
