Extractions: Massimiliano Rosolino hopes to wash away past Olympic failures at Sydney. Start Archives Click here for Archives of Olympic Update. After scoring their best-ever results at this year's European Championships with six gold medals, Italy's swimmers are looking to score big at the 2000 Games. "It's the first time we are going to the Olympics with this many athletes who have a chance of winning," says coach Alberto Castagnetti. "Let's hope the Olympic adventure will bring positive results." The country's top contender is Massimiliano Rosolino, who is looking forward to taking on the world. A front crawl and medley specialist, Rosolino will have a few mixed feelings in Australia, his mother's birthplace. But the 22-year old is looking to put a disappointing showing at the Atlanta gGames behind him. "Four years ago, I was still quite young," Rosolino says. "I had just turned 18. This year I hope to go a little bit better because it's going to be in Australia where my mother was born. I have to go really fast. Even against Australians."

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Visitors to Oz are told, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain." So I looked behind the curtain in Oz and this is what I saw: Behind the grandstand at the Olympic swimming pool is a less glamorous warmup pool that you won't see on TV. Wreathed by potted palms and patio chairs, redolent of chlorine, surrounded on all sides by shivering swimmers, it resembles in every detail the pool beneath the Holidome at the Holiday Inn in South Bend, Indiana. Extractions: This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.
