Product Description
An argument for women being allowed to teach in Church, written at the same time as the woman's suffrage movement was beginning to gain momentum. Using the Bible as her basis, Catherine dispels all the usual arguements against women in ministry, showing that this theology is both flawed and contradictory and also does not agree with the Early Church father's accounts of 1st and 2nd century church practice. ... Product Description
Linked to a six-part Channel 4 television series, this is an exploration of the inner workings of the Salvation Army as it tries to adapt to changing times through corporate restructuring without compromising its ideals. The book focuses on various aspects of the organization's work, including the two-year officer-training programme, care for the homeless (the Salvation Army is the second-largest provider of social services after the government), and the family-tracing service which locates at least 12 people every day. Looking beyond current concerns, the author examines the Army's history, and the principles which inspired William Booth in 1865 and continue to guide his followers today. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is about the faith of the Salvationist. It is based upon the eleven Articles of Faith which, since 1878, have been the basis of The Salvation Army's witness to the Christian gospel. Some may wonder why Salvationists place such emphasis upon a written statement of faith. After all, they are people who rightly maintain that a Christian is one who enters trustfully into a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and is born again of the Holy Spirit. They emphasise that faith is a personal affair, often springing from an experience of God's grace that is beyond the reach of definition or analysis. They may well be suspicious of any attempt to reduce this lif-changing encounter to a form of words on a page. Yet without words, the experience fails to be named, clarified or shared. Faith is not only personal: it has a public face. The earliest Christians acknowledged one another in the simple confession: 'Jesus is Lord' (1 Corinthians 12:3). This was their creed. As they shared it, they grounded their personal experience in the risen Christ, verified one another's experience and called upon the world to acknowledge the lordship of Christ. It was from these biblical beginnings that the creeds of the Church grew to be authoritative statements of the Christian faith. They have a long history, some of which is referred to within these pages. (from introduction) ... Read more

Product Description
PREFACE I have no hesitation in commending this small volume as containing so far as its space pennits, a good picture of my beloved Father and a record of much that made his life of interest and importance to the world. It does not, of course, profess to cover anything like the whole story of his many years of world-wide service. It could not do so. For any such complete history we must wait for that later production which may, I hope, be possible before very long when there has been time to go fully through the masses of diaries, letters and other papers he has left behind him. It must not he supposed that I can make myself responsible for every phrase Commissioner Railton has used. I know, however, that perhaps no one except myself had anything like his opportunities, during the last forty years, of knowing and studying my Father's life, both in public and private, and of understanding his thoughts and purposes. N ow we 'lvish this book to accomplish something.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Resource
Best known to most for their bands, thrift stores and red kettles at Christmas, the Salvation Army is both a charity and a Christian church. As a charity, it is committed to education, relief of poverty, help for the homeless and refugees, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. As a church, it is unabashedly committed to the advancement of the Christian religion as defined by eleven key doctrines which are conservative and evangelical in tone (pp. 675-676).
Especially interesting and authoritative articles in the dictionary include many biographical entries on past and present leadership.Naturally, much space is devoted to William and Catherine Booth, who founded the movement in the year 1865 in London's East End.Both of the Booths were excellent preachers and chose to focus their efforts on the poor.Their organization grew in large part due to their charisma, and many of their descendants have also played prominent roles in the organization.
Other articles detail the expansion of the Salvation Army's work into more than 100 countries.Work is currently conducted in 175 languages and the Salvation Army operates its charitable work on a budget in excess of 2.5 billion dollars annually.Expectations of true members (officers and soldiers) are high, including the expectation that they contribute to the ministry as large a proportion of their income as possible. However, much of the work of the Salvation Army is done by "adherents," people who have not taken the oath to become soldiers but otherwise embrace the teachings of the church, and by several thousand employees who serve in various capacities.
This book is a handy compendium of information on Salvation Army personnel and activities, and would be of interest to both scholars and lay readers. It does not give sources or bibliographic references at the end of each article, making further research difficult. It does, however, have an extensive bibliographic section near the end of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars award winning book!!!!!
I loved this book!!! there were many times were i couldn't put it down. When i got it, i had only heard a little bit about Eliza Shirley, but by the time i finished it, i couldn't believe how much this girl did at 16! She started the Salvation army in america, for she had heard them in england and had followed them and helped them. I rate this as a award winning book!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Edge of the Seat
What an inspiring story! I absolutely loved Wendy Lawton's book about Eliza Shirley. I loved the prayer wall, especially, and the lob stew. I loved the description of the clothing and all the vocabulary words. But mostly I'm amazed and encouraged by the Lassies' courage.

The writing was wonderful. I could feel my heart race increasing whenever they did the open-airs. A great story for any age!

4-0 out of 5 stars A WARM, UPLIFTING ACCOUNT
As a young girl Eliza Shirley could not avoid the ragged and dirty streets that led to her father's mill. She was touched by the sight of children begging and annoyed by being taunted with "Nothin' but a girl!"

She was a fortunate young woman in nineteenth century England, and she loved the accoutrement of her pleasant life - crinolines, kid gloves, a warm house. She especially loved her best friend, Beck.

However, Eliza's comfortable existence will soon change in a dramatic and surprising way: Who should come to Coventry but the Hallelujah Lassies bringing with them a rather scraggly group of followers who sing and clap tambourines?

Almost immediately Eliza knows with certainty that this is the work that God would have her do.There is nothing that will stop her and nothing did.She eventually became a backbone of the Salvation Army.

Wendy Lawton has written a warm, uplifting account of this remarkable woman's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hallelujah Lass
What an exciting, adventurous read. Lawton tells the story of Eliza Shirley, a teenager growing up in nineteenth-century England. Eliza was a pioneer with a gift of evangelism who brought the good works of The Salvation Army to America. I have a deeper respect for the work of The Salvation Army and the saints who serve.
Lawton's sophisticated writing style, and thorough research allow a delightful story to be enjoyed by the young and mature readers. As a 39 and holding reader, I didn't realize the book was written to ages 8-12 until I finished the book and browsed the back cover. My 12-year old daughter will read it next, and I'm sure she will enjoy it as much as I did. If you buy it as a gift, read it first--you will be blessed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hallelujah Lass
What a delightful read. The story of Eliza Shirley is written with adventure and sophistication--yet, it is easy to read. This book is for all readers. I'm over 39, but didn't realize it was written for ages 8-12 until I read the fine print on the back cover. Next, I shall share it with my 12 year old daughter. Lawton does an excellent job of weaving character, plot, and history to create an exciting story that touched my heart and deepened my love and respect for The Salvation Army. Lawton's book demonstrates that regardless of age, gender, size, or shape, we can be pioneers of change through our faithin Christ. If you buy this book as a gift for someone, read it first--you'll be blessed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection ofwar time kindness
This book was commissioned by the Salvation Army to declare the deeds of the brave women who went to help those who did not have the comforts of home. While at times this book was campy in nature and clearly of a directleaning towards the Salvation Army it also contained many accounts of hardwork and perserverance in the face of great physical and mental hardship. The women did everything they could to encourage the young soldiers to actas true heroes. They did things from making donuts to creating a placewhere soldiers could come as a refuge from the ravages of war. This bookhelped me to feel more supportive towards those who serve in the armedforces. ... Describing the faith and accomplishments of a self-giving and God-centered world-changer, this portrait is most concerned with Mother Booth's intellectual and spiritual journey. That journey was shaped by revivalists, social activists, and feminists. Booth, in turn, influenced the movement she headed through life-long fidelity to the doctrine of entire sanctification and her conviction that a Christian must be fully consecrated to God. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Catherine Booth Was A Humane Saint !
Until I read this wondrous book, I had no idea that Catherine Booth, the conservative Co-Founder of the Slavation Army, embraced women's rights, animal rights and vegetarianism. The author provides many documented instances when Catherine would intervene and stop people from being cruel to dogs, horses, donkeys and oxen. He also mentions the Booth's and their Children loving an array of pets. I always knew that Catherine Booth was a groundbreaking Christian and Humanitarian, but Roger Green surprisingly informed me about Catherine Booth being an animal-loving vegetarian. Too bad today's Christian leaders have failed to emulate her reverence for all God's creatures' creed !

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read

Product Description
The emergence of the Salvation Army within the context of Victorian England was theologically a part of the late nineteenth century holiness revival. This book examines the historical and theological influences on William Booth's decision to abandon sacramental practice (1883), and investigates the relationship between the Salvation Army's pneumatology and its non-sacramental theology. By placing the theology of the early Salvation Army in the context of Victorian society, the Wesleyan revival, and the nineteenth century holiness movement, the author interprets Booth's non-sacramental position as the subordination of ecclesiological and sacramental concerns to pneumatological priorities. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Salvation Army," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Salvation Army in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Salvation Army when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Salvation Army, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
