Their ancestral lands span an area the size of Sweden in the Nordic countries. The Sami people are among the largest indigenous ethnic groups in Europe. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages, which are classified as members of the Finno-Lappic group of the Uralic language family. Traditionally, the Sami have plied a variety of livelihoods, including coastal fishing, fur trapping, and sheep herding. However, the best known Sami livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding which about 10% of the Sami are connected with and 2,800 actively involved with full-time. For traditional, environmental, cultural, and political reasons, reindeer herding is legally reserved only for Sami people in certain regions of the Nordic countries. The Sami are often known in other languages as "Lap", "Lapp", or "Laplanders", but many Sami regard these as pejorative terms. The Sami people living in Sápmi in northern Europe have started to engage in tourism, particularly in view of the rationalised and modernised methods of reindeer herding. Sami tourism offers job opportunities and enables the spreading of information. A good basic introduction to the life of the Sami people,this is appropriate for any age group, and would be a good educational tool to be included when children are being taught about native (indigineous)cultures.This was one of the earliest native cultures, and has many implications for us even at the present time.Since recently learning that I have unexpected genetic roots in this culture I have been actively educating myself about my "roots".

Many questions
This book contains a collection of articles, journal entries and essays about a mapping project in the Sami lands of the Kola peninsula.As I read the book flaps and prefaces, I kept wondering, "What is this book about?".And then I kept wondering as I got lost in the rhetoric of the first chapter.And I said, "Well, surely the topic of the book and the project that it seems to be about will become clear soon."As I read the remaining chapters, I was able to put the pieces together.It seems that the book is one product of a Canadian-Sami joint research project to map Sami resources that was completed in about 1998.One of the main intentions of the project seems to be to provide the Sami with maps that they could use to bolster their claims for land usage rights in Russia.

This book is rather a mixed bag of goodies.The main message is not very clearly stated, yet, the information contained in various parts of the book is extremely valuable, and the stories are quite interesting and illuminating.Despite the slimness of the volume, the essays and articles still manage to contain a good deal of historical and ethnographical information about the Sami, as well as documentation about who worked on this particular project and how.The journal entries provide a rare view into living conditions in small villages of Northern Russia in the mid-90s, just after the collapse of the Soviet Union.The book is filled with photographs of modern Sami landscapes, juxtaposed with color reproductions of 18th century prints by Leems. The maps, which were the reason for the project, are included in an envelope in the back, and are the main treasure of the book. ... Read more

Emerging from centuries of internal colonisation, their ancient cultures and languages severely eroded by policies of forced assimilation, their traditional lifestyles and Economies damaged, and their political voices marginalised, recent decades have seen their struggles for collective survival rise to political prominence in national and international agendas, with the promise of Indigenous self-determination held out by national governments and the United Nations Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples. Both the Sami and Indigenous Australians have won important new rights during these decades, yet the outcomes are very different. A 'Novel'??Solid fieldwork plus updates through 1989!
"I wrote this book around the herd as the indispensable first step toward understanding a pastoral society."Thus does Paine justify the wealth of charts, graphs and tables compiled as a result of his accompaniment of a herder and his companions through the seasons, so as to impart "the contexts of the accidents and contingency plans and disagreements that belong to reindeer pastoralism".

Why the earlier reviewer found this work off-track, so to speak (it is after all a Smithsonian ethnographic study), is a mystery to me.Two of the study's four sections are titled "Cultures of possession and production, 1962" and "Pastoralism by authorization, 1979-1989".This is a solid and absorbing work!

A Review of Reindeer Identification Rather than Pastoralism
Robert Paine had this book published in 1994.Granted it was published by the Smithsonian, but the fieldwork was done in 1962.The entire focus was on the reindeer and not so much on the Sami pastoralist traditions.WhileI feel that the book was worth reading, it just didn't accomplish what Ithought it was going to.I expected a more in depth look at the Samiinstead of their reindeer.To say that this novel is without merit is tobe unfair to the author. Paine has written a nice peace of work, just notwhat the title said it was. ... Read more
