From the author: This study of the interactions between market towns and their surrounding countryside is inspired by David Farmer's work on agricultural marketing. Central place theories of "spheres of influence" are applied to a number of small English towns for which there is evidence of commercial contacts in the period 1280-1520. A sample of towns is used, including a group of contiguous market centres in the west midlands. Trading hinterlands are defined and compared, showing that a half of places with which small towns traded lay within a radius of ten km. The shape of hinterlands was influenced by a number of geographical and economic factors. Analysis of debts and records of trade contacts allows us to define the urban hierarchy and the extent of competition between towns. A commercial chain is found linking London and the ports to provincial cities and then with the network of market towns, which in turn dealt with small-scale village traders. Even some small towns, which usually went in for little specialization, developed a distinctive product or commodity. Social and cultural factors also played a part in defining relations between town and country. The study of hinterlands and relations between towns gives general insights into the medieval economy.

Product Description

A small town in Saskatchewan suffers a tragedy when Joey Fallow, star of the high-school’s hockey team, is killed in a bus crash. Twenty-five years later, when the CBC comes to town to make a movie about the event, it becomes clear that many residents haven’t moved on and that many don’t want to. Mired in the past, and at the same time acutely frustrated by the stagnancy he sees around him, is Adam, Joey’s best friend. Adam has more recently suffered an accident himself, one that has left his memory faulty. In a struggle to master the chronology of his own life, and rise to the new challenges put in his way, he risks alienating just about everyone who frames his past and present, including his wife Ellen and many in their long-time circle of friends.

“The genesis of All This Town Remembers was a sentence overheard in a basement bar in Ottawa,” says Johnston. “It was a man talking to a woman or a woman talking to a man – I don’t remember – but they were leaning over a jukebox at the time, and one of them was sad and the other was trying not to make it worse. They loved each other and I wrote down the snippet I overheard. Even though I didn’t remember the exact line, I kept working on the story it started.

Then one spring day I was in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, with a bunch of relatives. I was standing outside somewhere and wishing I still smoked. It was pretty quiet, because inside was a funeral for my grandmother. My cousin’s boy jumped as far as he could into a puddle and yelled happily. He seemed too young for the gesture to be defiant, and I wished I was that young too, and I could do something that was its own, and not opposing something else. So I wrote this story about a man who wants that too.”

Johnston’s debut novel gives distinction to the unassuming – the everyday dialogue of married life, the muffled hum of local goings-on and the quiet frustrations of winter. Adam worries at the misconceptions surrounding people’s places in the world, watching as dreams are downplayed in the wake of the reality that replaces them. Torn between wanting more and wanting what he has to be enough, he resents both inclinations as somehow inauthentic. Around him he sees a community of people struggling to articulate what they mean and to shake the old adages, all the while comforted by their persistence.

All This Town Remembers is about recollection, the way some things fade and then jump back fresh; the way others are recalled so often they get ground down. Johnston’s narrative hinges on the gentle wearing away that turns these memories into adages themselves, part of a mythology that both houses and jails its believers. With sharp observations about small-town insecurities, condescension, authenticity and the subtleties of social interactions, Johnston’s novel is an understated, startlingly resonant portrait of a man and a town.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very talented Author!
Well, I loved this book. Of course, my brother wrote it, so I am a tad biased. I really do think it is a great book, though.

I don't really know what to say about it, except that I honestly had trouble putting it down. It was fun for me to read, because I no longer live where it was set and miss home. So it was like a trip home for me.

I love his descriptions. They are not over done but really make you feel like you are there, seeing what the character describing it is seeing. I even found myself relating a lot to how the main character felt.

I most definitely think anyone who bought this book would enjoy it. People who are not from the Prairies of Canada may not relate to some of it, but they might relate to other parts of it.

Product Description
A ghost town is a town or city that has been completely abandoned by human inhabitants, usually because the economic activity that supported it has failed, or due to natural or human-caused disasters such as flood, government action, uncontrolled lawlessness or war. The term is sometimes used in a depreciative sense to include cities, towns, and neighborhoods which, while still populated, are significantly less so than in years past. Some ghost towns are tourist attractions, among them Tombstone, Arizona; Jerome, Arizona; Oatman, Arizona; Bannack, Montana; Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay, outside Lüderitz, Namibia. This is especially true of those that preserve interesting architecture. Visiting, writing about, and photographing ghost towns is a minor industry. Some ghost towns may be overgrown, difficult to access, and dangerous or illegal to visit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Canadian Literature
This is one of the great works of Canadian fiction. It tells the story of a retiring doctor through the first-person perspectives of others. It is extremely well written, and the existentialist bent of the theme is insightful and provocative. It reads fast, and you'll wish there were more. This should certainly be part of any reading list for Canadian literature, and probably for fiction in general. Surely you should also read Ross's "As For Me and My House." ... Read more
