As the first example of life in the Marine Corps, the school should be a model of efficiency and display all of the traits that will be taught in the course of the Period of Instruction. The information management system at TBS is a mixed bag of stand alone applications, memorandum books, and self generated spreadsheets. The current system is not efficient in regards to time management or visibility of the data. The primary data storage systems used by the Marine Corps do not accommodate the type of text documents that are recorded at TBS nor do they allow for adequate visibility of an officers performance during the POI. The result is a duplication of effort at each level of the command. This joint thesis team has produced a Two-Tier Client/Server Information Management System for use at The Basic School, known as SWORD. From the supplier: Carrollton High School in Georgia is being used as a test site of the Georgia 2000 Project, with a goal of making it one of the most technologically sophisticated school systems in the US. A key goal of the project is the development of research and development relationships with hardware and software vendors. Currently, the school has a local area network comprised of 350 microcomputers, each connected via token-ring network to 21 CD-ROMs. The CD-ROM Server from CBIS Inc makes information from the 21 550Mbyte databases, equivalent to 4.5 billion printed pages, available to any computer on the campus network. While the CD-ROM- and multimedia-based system has been enthusiastically received by students, the ultimate goal is the creation of a wide-area network that will make the information available to all schools and a number of public facilities in the immediate area.
