no book
I made a mistake. Don't make the same one yourself. The book attempts to introduce the reader to chemistry, then produces a table with the first 11 elements and their valences, leaving the rest unknown. It does the same for molecular physics, then states that an electron is 2000 times more massive than a proton. It touches on astronomy, then claims the Grand Canyon was created by a meteorite impact. It tries to discuss Einstein's concept of space-time, but does absolutely nothing for relating the actual formulae or demonstrating the concept in any way to help the reader understand it. The book does however waste the paper to discuss what would happen if the sun's mass was turned into a black hole, and how even though Sol's mass is unchanged, it would mysteriously begin sucking in nearby stars. It talks about the speed of light and refraction through a clear substance, then mentions two theories, one which claims light travels slower through denser materials, one which claims light moves faster- and never states which is correct. Patrick from Sydney apparently meant to review another book, because this is certainly not a 500 page textbook. The 240 pages of material are in a comfortably large font, with little enough real information that each chapter can be read without difficulty in about the same time it takes to read a magazine article. There is no math beyond the most basic of algebra, with a single page devoted to the definition of sine, cosine and tangent so that Snell's law of refraction can even be brought up. The primary focus of this book seems to be a cursorary history of physics, but I would prefer reading a decent encyclopedia's individual entries than the thin overview presented in "Teach Yourself Physics." For the irrelevant discussion on the future of power generation in England and "blue sky research" that was out of date when this book went to the publisher, I would rather pick up a copy of Nature, Smithsonian or Omni. I thoroughly regret wasting my money and time on this book and urge you not to do so as well. ... Read more |

Great little book
Good introduction and basic foundation for Statistics
Great, for the right student Personally, I would have put the probability chapters earlier. My feeling is that stats derives from probability, it's not an add-on to examine after learning stats. This author clearly knows what he's doing, though, so I won't push the point. My math background puts me outside of his target audience. I have a friend struggling through the book, and she is very happy with the level and presentation. She's the kind of reader for whom the book is meant, and it seems to work for her. If your math skills need resuscitation more than review, this book could well meet your needs. It's easy to read, business-like, and doesn't talk down to the reader. Work all the way through it, and you should have good basic skills at handling numbers, and at sniffing out the BS behind numbers thrown at you.
statistical significance and practical significance It may appear this criticism is nitpicking, but it is not uncommon for scholars (in the media) to use the word 'significant' in such a way that leads the viewers or readers to think the findings are 'large' or 'important'.By not making this distinction clear, this book takes a chance that additional readers may be similarly mislead. However, in its favor, this book is low-priced and introductory, and for many readers, the issue I mention will not be a big deal.

Brit math not for americans
Good general coverage This book is firmly aimed at school students or those who have forgotten the principles of algebra, and in that it is an excellent book. However, since no coverage is given to more advanced topics such as matrix or linear algebra, a title along the lines of 'Teach Yourself Elementary Algebra' would have been better.
Old reliable companion for reviewing basic Algebra... I have always found this to be a faithful companion when I find myself forgetting basic algebraic tasks such as simultaneous equations, factoring, etc.The writing is simple and easy to follow. There are numerous exercises to reinforce the material. There is one drawback.I have found quite a few errors in the solutions within the text AND in some of the answers to exercises. However, if one is familiar with the material these shortcomings can be easily excused. If you are just beginning to learn algebra go with "Practical Algebra " by Selby et al.However if you have take the subject before and just want to brush up basic High School algebra get this volume.
awesome helped me raise my grades |
