Scientists of faith
This is the benchmark text I used to affirm the origins of the scientific conglomerate as men of FAITH. These researchers were the men who discovered gas law, thermodynamics, the laws of gravity, and many others. One might be surprised that these are the very scientists my generation studied some 50 years ago, as Christian men, but who appear as cold, pragmatic, calculating men, in the science texts, today. The truth is revealed, the challenges, dire efforts sacrificing much to gain understanding of what we now utilize as rudiments of our scientific structure. Not enough of the personalities of these men is exposed in the texts of today, where "Scientists of Faith" personalizes these men. Their struggles as Christians investigating God's mysterious creation are explained as well as their personal hurdles. They were, after all, people, first, Christians second, and sceintists, third.

Is this a homophobic conspiracy?????
So long as Bart Simpson can say, "George Washington Carver is the guy who carved up George Washington." and so long as Black Americans are portrayed as lacking math and science aptitude, there needs to be publication about the importance of George Washington Carver.This book said many important things.For example, George Washington Carver was a credit to dark-skinned blacks because many critics at the time (and many people today) note that most famous or achieving Blacks were partially white.Also, this book suggests that the relationship between Carver and the famous black activist at the university where he worked did not always get along.Still, if Langston Hughes' biographer was criticized for downplaying Hughes' gay experiences, equal noise should be made here.The author repeats in several passages that no proof exists to say Carver was gay.Well, why would that be a concern?Who made the suggestion?Why isn't the allegation examined in more detail in this text?The author mentioned that Carver loved to give young men massages in peanut oil.Is that not considered homoerotic solely because it doesn't involve genital contact?This book was published a year after AIDS was discovered and when homophobia was at an apex.Thus, perhaps the author's avoidances can be contextualized and forgiven.Nevertheless, I find this book disturbingly heterosexist and I would avoid reading more works from this biographer. ... One of the most prominent Soviet Arctic scientists of the 1920s and 1930s, Mikhail Mikhailovich Ermolaev was a geologist, physicist, and oceanographer. After working in the Arctic for some thirteen years, he was arrested by the NKVD, convicted on a trumped-up charge of 'sabotage', and sent to the Gulag for ten years. After barely surviving a year of correctional hard labour in a lumber camp, Ermolaev was appointed to a sharashka, or professional team, which was charged with extending the railroad to the coal mines of Vorkuta in the farthest reaches of northeast Russia. Still later, he and his family were exiled to Syktyvkar and Arkhangel'sk. Remarkably, Ermolaev was eventually able to resume his academic career, ultimately establishing a new Department of the Geography of the Oceans at Kaliningrad State University. Translated from the original Russian and edited by William Barr, this biography is a fascinating personal account typical of the experiences of so many Soviet citizens who were unjustly banished to the infamous Gulag.Because Ermolaev was part of a specialist team, the conditions he and his family endured were better than most, with reasonably comfortable quarters and relatively adequate food. outstanding Russian scientist who survived Stalin's Siberian Gulag
The biography is not only a story of notable scientific accomplishment, but also of hardship and survival in the Soviet Gulag of Stalin's early years. Ermolaev was arrested in 1938, released, and arrested a second time in 1940. He was accused of being a member of a counterrevolutionary fascist organization and engaging in counterrevolutionary espionage on the basis of unsubstantiated reports by colleagues envious of his reputation for his contributions to geology and oceanography of the Arctic and his promise. Many scientists, military officers, government officials, and others arrested during the Stalinist purges were executed. Ermolaev was spared this fate, but was nonetheless sentenced to a harsh term in the Siberian Gulag. In 1941 he was put in charge of the construction of a railroad line to Siberian coal mines for fuel which would have an important part in Soviet war production.

With the help of friends, Ermolaev was able to resume his teaching career and scientific research and writings after he was released not long after the end of the War. Establishment of the Department of the Geography of the Oceans at Kaliningrad State University was one of his accomplishments in this period. In 1954, he was officially granted rehabilitation in accordance with the demented practices of Stalinist Russia.

The translation is serviceable and literal, little more complex than the style of a news article. Intended as a record and testament of this indomitable individual from recollections and writings of Ermolaev's son, the biography is basically factual rather than interpretive or explanatory. The larger framework of Stalinist paranoia and injustices and hardships to untold numbers of Russian citizens is known. Within this framework, Ermolaev's story is unique in that he was spared the worst of fates and despite the hurdles he faced, made distinctive and lasting contributions to the fields of geology and oceanography. Parts of the text and appendices document enough of this scientific work for readers to grasp its significance. While Ermolaev's survival against a hostile government and inhumane conditions is one more memorable account of the sorrows and cruelties endured under Stalinism.

Best biography on Thomas Henry Huxley to date
This splendid, relatively terse, tome on the life and career of Thomas Henry Huxley, the celebrated 19th Century English biologist, is a masterpiece of splendid scholarship and prose by its author, Sherrie L. Lyons. Lyons makes a persuasive case showing how Huxley's strict adherence to the scientific method led eventually to the acrimonious feud between him and Richard Owen, the eminent anatomist of the mid 19th Century. Lyons shows how Huxley gradually shifted his allegience from the German structuralist view championed by Owen to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection, but at the same time recognizing some major pitfalls to Darwin's theory, most notably the significance of hybrid sterility. Huxley's legitimate criticisms of natural selection led Darwin to embark upon an ambitious research program - with the assistance of other leading British scientists - to study hybrid sterility, among others, resulting in a further strengthening - not weakening - of Darwin's original concept of natural selection. Lyons notes how the discoveries of important fossils in the 1860's with ample evidence of gradual transitions between species eventually led to Huxley's shift from a strict saltationalist view of the origin of species that was greatly at odds with natural selection to fully embracing Darwin's concept of natural selection as a gradual evolutionary process. She also points out that Huxley, long before Darwin himself, was willing to seize the initiative and note the strong kinship of the great apes with Man, making this point in public lectures, popular articles and finally, a book published in 1864, seven years prior to Darwin's "The Descent of Man". Last, but not least, Lyons notes how Huxley's original concerns regarding natural selection are still being investigated by evolutionary biologists - most notably paleontologists and developmental biologists - today.

Biography of an early Darwin critic...
This fascinating and important biography of T.H.Huxley shows almost another Huxley from the one we associate with the Darwinian tradition. Huxley is an important figure, for in many ways he saw more clearly than Darwin, and current biology is catching up with him. The author begins by noting that 'while Huxley enthusiastically accepted the idea of descent with modification, he was critical of the two central components of Darwin's theory: gradualism and natural selection'. As the author notes, Huxley warned Darwin on the eve of publication that he had burdened his theory unnecessarily with the dictum, natura non facit saltum.This eye opening account reveals a Huxley who could step from a time machine into the contemporary debates on evolution, as the issues that were clearly in the background to Darwin's public triumph resurface with renewed force. Indeed, we discover that Huxley was close also to the developmental tradition with his interest in morphology and considerations of type.

It is a strange testimony to the telescoped pictures we have as non-specialists dependent on hurried summaries that this alternate side of Huxley should have remained unclear throughout the whole Darwin debate. And it is a reminder that the debate is one of selective emphasis of issues that were present from the beginning and never enter the mythical accounts of the Wilberforce debate.This biography, from Prometheus books no less,seems a bellwether for a paradigm in transition. Must reading.

Where is Vygotsky?
"Lev Vygotsky: Revolutionary Scientist" by Fred Newman and Lois Holzman purports to be a clear introduction to Vygotsky and his ideas but it's actually a muddled, mish-mosh in which Vygotsky's discoveries get lost in a sea of philosophical, political, and psychological jargon.For example, the authors devote pages to discussing the "Zone of Proximal Development," a concept central to understanding Vygotsky's contributions to learning theory, but never bother to explain or define it for the reader.Moreover, the authors have an alarming axe to grind.Fired up by revolutionary zeal, they want to show that Vygotsky's ideas are thoroughly Marxian and can not be understood in any other context. Reading the book has something of the feeling of being invited to a seminar on financial planning and then discovering that the seminar is a poorly disguised infomercial for an expensive and unremunerative annuity.Readers searching for a lucid introduction to Vygotsky should look elsewhere. ...
