Product Description
The story of the changing countryside of Scotland can be traced through its buildings. All the successive phases of agricultural development - from the 18th century revolution of 'Improvement' to the factory farming of the 20th century - are recorded in stone, concrete and steel. This book, the result of a long-term research project undertaken by RCAHMS and the National Museums of Scotland, records farm buildings across the many regions of Scotland. The result is a volume richly illustrated with drawings and photographs covering a wide variety of building types, and tracing their evolution against the development of modern Scottish agriculture over the past 300 years. Susanna Wade Martins and Miles Glendinning, with contributors Peter Caunt and John Shaw, present a fascinating story of diversity and change, which will be of great interest to those concerned with agricultural, architectural, social and landscape history, and the future of Scotland's countryside. ... Product Description
Cleaven Dyke was for some centuries identified as a Roman construction. However, the authors' surveys and excavations strongly suggest that it was built as part of the Neolithic cursus monument tradition. The volume presents the comprehensive results of their study, showing in detail the segmented nature of the Dyke's construction, its alignment and the palaeoenvironmental evidence for the surrounding landscape. In addition the nearby recitlinear timber enclosure of Littleour is also described. ... Read more

Product Description
This reference book describes in detail the 78 neolithic chambered cairns known to exist in the county of Caithness, the north-east corner of the Scottish mainland. Following the same format as their earlier book, "The Chambered Cairns of Orkney" (EUP, 1989), the authors list the localities and references for each cairn, and provide a full description of the existing structures, with a summary account of the results of excavation where necessary. A full inventory of the cairns' contents in included and the first half of the book discusses the interpretation and archaeological significance of the monuments. The Caithness cairns have been re-surveyed since the last report on the area ("The Chambered Tombs of Scotland") - this new book expands and updates the material. As the only well-documented and comprehensive guide to the Caithness chambered cairns it will be an indispensible reference source for the Neolithic period in Europe. ... Read more

Product Description
Of all the early historic peoples of Scotland, the Picts capture the popular imagination like no other. Although archaeology is gradually uncovering more information about how they lived, they are still best known for their carved monuments, which offer remarkable testimony to their artistic skills. The symbol stones of the Picts are among the most fascinating and enigmatic groups of early medieval sculpture. The purpose and meaning of the stones and carvings still remain something of a mystery - theories range from their use as personal memorials and testaments of clan membership to records of ancient ceremonies and rituals. Pictish sculpture has been the focus of in-depth study for over 200 years, yet the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland's approach of taking photographic records using oblique peripheral flash and producing measured drawings on site, has led to many exciting advances in the field. This highly illustrated volume is the definitive guide to the arcane history of Scotland's Pictish stones, for the first time featuring every symbol stone in Scotland, including a large number of previously unseen discoveries.Over 100 new drawings by John Borland, plus photographs and archive sketches, will feature alongside the details and locations of all the Scottish stones recorded so far. Combining expert research and photography with unique artwork, "The Pictish Symbol Stones of Scotland" is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of one of our nation's most mysterious and captivating ancestors. ... Product Description
The definitive publication of the ten-year Southern Hebrides Mesolithic Project (1988-1998). The project aimed to document Mesolithic settlement on the islands of Islay and Colonsay and interpret it to throw light on a number of major issues; the colonization of Scotland following the last Ice Age; the nature of early postglacial settlement patterns; and the transitionto Neolithic and farming economies. The report is divided into nine sections. The first of these describe the development of the project, palaeoenvironmental studies on raw materials, sea level change and vegetation history. Later sections cover the results of archaeological surveys and excavations, the computer modelling of site location and foraging behaviour, and the experimental replication of tool use. The monograph concludes with an overall interpretation of the diverse strands of evidence regarding Mesolithic settlement in the region. A core element is the publication of the major Mesolithic settlements of Bolsay Farm on Islay and Staosnaig on Colonsay. The key feature of the project, however, is the application of a landscape approach to hunter-gatherer archaeology through multi-disciplinary research. ... Read more

Chapters: Timeline of Prehistoric Scotland. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 97. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: This timeline of prehistoric Scotland is a chronologically ordered list of important archaeological sites in Scotland and of major events affecting Scotland's human inhabitants and culture during the prehistoric period. The period of prehistory prior to occupation by the genus Homo is part of the geology of Scotland. Prehistory in Scotland ends with the arrival of the Romans in southern Scotland in the first century AD and the beginning of written records. The archaeological sites and events listed are the earliest examples or among the most notable of their type. No traces have yet been found of either a Neanderthal presence or of Homo sapiens during the Pleistocene interglacials. The first indications of humans in Scotland occur only after the ice retreated in the 11th millennium BC and the current Flandrian interglacial began. Since that time the landscape of Scotland has been altered dramatically by both human and natural forces. Initially, sea levels were lower than at present due to the large volume of ice that remained. This meant that the Orkney archipelago and many of the Inner Hebridean islands were attached to the mainland, as was the present-day island of Great Britain to Continental Europe. Much of the present-day North Sea was also dry land until after 4000 BC. Dogger Bank, for example was part of a large peninsula connected to the European continent. This would have made travel to western and northern Scotland relatively easy for early human settlers. The subsequent isostatic rise of land makes estimating post-glacial coastlines a complex task and there are numerous raised beaches around Scotland's coastline. Many of the sites are located in the Highlan...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15874790 ... Read more
