Do you like sea horses?In her nonfiction book Sea Horses Sally M. Walker unravels many seahorse secrets.The book proves that sea horses are interesting animals.
Sally Walker writes in the company of her golden retriever and two cats.She has written many books for children, including Hippos, Rhinos, and Earthquakes.She is a children's literature consultant and has taught Children's Literature at Northern Illinois University.She currently lives in Illinois with her husband and two children.
Sea horses live all over the world.Hippocampus Ingens live off the west coast of North and South America.H. Abdominalis lives of the southeast coast of Australia.H. Baby sea horses start life in an interesting way.They are originally from the mother sea horse, but are born from the father.The eggs are transfers when the mother places her ovipositor into the hole at the top of the gather's pouch.She deposits her eggs in the pouch in 6 to 15 seconds.From that point on, the male takes care of the eggs alone.
Baby sea horses hatch inside their mother and come out alive as we do.After all the eggs are transferred, they are surrounded by tissue.Any egg that is not fully surrounded by tissue will eventually dissolve.After each egg is ready to hatch, the tissue dissolves and the babies leave their eggs.The liquid inside the pouch is fresh water, but it becomes saltier and saltier until it is like the ocean.This way, when they are born, they are already used to the salty water of the ocean.When they are born, they are usually such a color and size that they"look like fish poop' says one reader of the book.After seeing a close-up picture, the same observer said "their noses are big".
Sea Horses is a very informative book.I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any one ages 8 and up looking for information on sea horses.It really does prove that sea horses are interesting animals. ... Read more
