Earlier books are much better
The earlier books in the series are much better.Blake Murdock has turned into some kind of Uber-naval warrior, an expert on things far out side of his realm of professional study.Beyond this the book lacks intensity and focus of the earlier books.ST7 fights an entire war in about 150 pages, compared to the 3 or 4 fire fights that take place in the other books.The pace feels rushed, and the writing appears to have suffered because of it

Another strongly written novel. A great story that action lovers should approve of.

Go SEALs!!!!!!!!
This is a great SEAL book, it has a good plot and very good writing. I have read all but the first SEAL books and I think Keith Douglass'earlier books are the best. This one is on the top of the list. The newer books (starting with Flashpoint) get prety boring because a firefight is over within seconds because of that bullpup, they shoot around cornners and blow evey thing up. I think Keith should take them out by saying that one acidently blew up when they were traning or somthing. But I am not saying that these are bad books I really enjoy reading them I think this book is good right now because of the situatioin over in Iraq.

Too Good!
I really loved this book.Ms. Melton is improving, and she was good to begin with.This tale really gripped me.In part, I think, because there are young children involved and in danger, but also because it's a hell of a story.The suspense is high-octane, as is the sexual attraction and fulfillment.A great over-all story.

Sean Harlan, a previous player in this series, makes a truly human hero.He's sexy, he's nice, and he's flawed.Ellie Stuart, introduced in DON'T LET GO, is a solid leading lady for him.I hope Ms. Melton includes them in a future story.

Other previously introduced characters come out to play, too.Solomon McGuire, Vinnie, and his fiancee, Lia, and the hot Commander of SEAL Team 12, Joe Montgomery.They all continue to be strong characters.

I love and hate the way this book ended and hope that Ms. Melton will, at some point, address the threads she left dangling.

If you haven't read Ms. Melton's Navy SEAL series, you're missing out on some good entertainment.

I liked how the author was able to weave
all the characters from her other Navy
SEALs into this plot.It made the story
line believable.

Struck at my deepest fears
This book strikes at the worst fear I can feel: the infiltration at all levels of our Justice system by a criminal organization.

Well written and very believable, TOO FAR GONE was the most terrifying of the Centurion Series from Ms. Marliss to date. IMO. You won't find graphic violence or sex but the sense of impending doom and helplessness in the face of the abuse of the justice system almost kept me from finishing it.

I don't know if I have the courage to read the next installment.

lots of action and suspense
Starts off a bit slow, but once the ball gets rolling, the action is non stop, and quick paced.I like the main characters, Sean and Ellie, and the side characters were great too.Vinny and Ophelia make an appearance, as well as Hannah and another couple from previous books.
I wish there was more about Skyler and Drake, they were sweet together.Altogether a good suspenseful novel, but the sex was just lukewarm.

This book was not what I expected at all. I did not enjoy it and would not recommend it.

Hoo-f'ing-yah
Great illustration of BUDS.Whenever I need to get fired up, I dust this one off and go for it.

Compelling and awe-inspiring
Now this is one book I proudly display on my coffee table (keep those beers away!). Chronicling a class through BUD/S indoc, hell week, and beyond (a mere fraction of the training potential SEALS must endure before their first op), every photograph in this massive book is interesting and sometimes shocking.I sat down and flipped through it in one setting and was exhausted afterwards.Navy SEAL's are absolute studs and any man who can make it through BUD/S was blessed with godlike MENTAL toughness and gets my respect.Anybody thinking of volunteering for BUD/S should look here first. Hooyah!

Can't get any closer than this. Terrific!
Let's face it, we don't have a clue - not unless we've been there. Most of the pictures we see, the stories in the press, they only tell half of it, if at all.
We don't know what it takes to want to be one, a Navy SEAL, not really. And we don't have the slightest idea what hardships these men have to go through to be able to be called one, in the end.
I needed stories and pictures for research I'm doing on a manuscript. I found a handful of great books on the Navy SEALs and Special Forces, but photographs - and I mean those that tell a story - they were hard to come by - which of course is logical. These guys don't wait around for someone to snap their picture.
Then I found this. It's huge in every sense of the word. Richard D. Schoenberg sure knows what he's doing. Not only do you get tons of pages with just about anything you would want to know about Navy SEAL training. Richard won the trust of these young men so his portraits show you a depth that is hard to find, most certainly during the harshest training conditions imaginable.
Sure, in the end we still don't really know what it's like cause we have not been there but with this we get as close as we can get.
If you're interested in Navy SEAL training, this book should be in your hands and on your shelf.

Excellent... Pictures are worth a thousand words!
I would recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to get an idea of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. This photo essay chronicles the journey of an actual BUD/s class from start to finish. While I have read other accounts, the pictorial evidence really clarifies some of what happens and why so many would-be SEALs drop out during the process. He Loves To Shoot and Loot And It Shows
Another review mentioned that Richard Marchinko uses the same formula in all of his novels. I agree--and that's part of what makes his books so much fun to read. These are action novels where you'll actually learn something if you are willing to pay attention, as well as fun examples of what we'd all love to do to the people who give us orders and have no earthly idea what they're talking about (no, not kill them--the former SEAL saves that for terrorists and traitors--but expose their stupidity and embarrass them). Any RM book has colorful characters, more real life resonance than any Dale Brown tome, tons of acronyms, a few huge plausibility leaps, and the idea that viewers will take in all these items and enjoy the ride. Mission Accomplished. 4/5.

Just ONE reason this is better than the usual Marcinko stuff
I've read a lot of Marcinko's books and I have to admit they're starting to bore me.It's the same formula every time; Dick discovers a dirty politician or evil tycoon, has a verbal confrontation with him, goes away, comes back, kills the bad guy's ex-special ops bodyguards, and finally kills the bad guy.Somewhere in there he stops to talk about the size of his unit (and I don't mean the number of guys on his team).What makes Seal Force Alpha a little different from the norm is the amount of effort Marcinko has spent on setting up the enemy this time.The "ex-special ops bodyguards" that he usually chews through without much trouble are actually fearsome in this book!They're the Chinese equivalent of SEALs and Marcinko & Weissman really make them seem like they could give Marcinko trouble.The way Marcinko describes his fight in the river and his encounters with the Chinese commander are quite interesting and he manages to throw in some real surprises. The inclusion of obscure tradecraft details also makes these sequences quite thrilling.It's a good thing they're here, too--the rest of the book ranges from mildly intriguing to downright sloppy (the ending is very rushed).An average Marcinko book with slightly above average action scenes.

Wonderfully written and loads of action!
Another well written plot and subplot from this author. Action packed and explosive. It shows the real heart of these men who keep fighting even when they don't know who to trust. Superb and I can't wait to reread it.

Mr. Douglass Does It Again
Seal Team Seven (15) Ambush has to be in the top three best in this series.From start to finish, I could not put it down.The only thing I didn't like is the death of one of my favorite characters.I will not reveal who that was so I do not ruin the book for those who have not read it yet.At least the new Master Chief is good addition.Navy Seals are a cold, calculated

This book is perfect for anyone wanting to learn about diet and exercise. Even if you don't know what a CHO is, you can easily pick this book up and learn the facts about eating healthy. It is clearly and concisely written. Even if you are not a Seal or other Spec Ops, this book is a view into the kind of healthy habits it takes to stay at the top of your game in any situation.

Essential b.s. eliminator
After reading countless magazine sales pitches couched as articles and opinionated arguments among body builders on the Internet, this book is a welcome, refreshing source of understandable factual information on what to eat, how to eat it, and when to eat it. Simple.

Since it is by and for the U.S. Navy it is not trying to sell you the latest supplement or training video, so you might be left wondering what the catch is--there is no catch.

Large text, many tables of reference information, clearly written in a commonsense way make this indispensable for body builders or athletes, not just military personnel. I can't recommend this manual highly enough.

Help Yourself Get Healthy
Although targeted toward the Navy SEAL, this book is full of easy-to-follow nutritional information anyone can benefit from.

Simple and Concise Nutritional Information
I have bought nutritional books in the past and just been swamped with their language and theory. As a incredibly busy graduate student (people with similarly busy lives can relate) I just didn't have time to sit down and battle out the information, let alone in one sitting. Upon getting this book, I cracked it open and already found myself zipping through the worksheets giving myself quick access to important nutritional information. The authors have broken the subject down into easily understandable segments (though this book probably isn't for the more advanced nutritionist). It is important to note that the book is targeted towards Navy SEALs and other military personnel. Consequently it does give information that is important to them and may not be relevant to the average reader (i.e. - information on military rations and mission recovery nutrition). The chapters covered are:

Solid Military Action Novel
Direct action is a well written military adventure.It's halfway between a Mack Bolan novel and Clancy novel.The action is fast and often, with solid real world weapons and tactics underpinning it.The story is fairly plausible, and the action sequences are well written.The characters are mostly archetypes, but they're too much fun to read about to care. Overall it's a fast read, and can be knocked out in one sitting.

My favorite of all.
This book is my favorite of the series. Starts with the team finding money that turns out counterfeit. When they need to go into Lebanon to destroy the factory making the fake cash is when things heat up and it never stops. This book has action, it has great harmony with the characters and the humor between Razor and Jaybird can't be forgotten. It's classic. This book is a winner all the way around.

A captivating read...you won't want to put it down
Blake and the Team are back in the thick of it. After finding counterfeit cash in the middle east, theyr're sent back to destroy the factory.We get to see how they plan,execute and how they react when it all hits the fan!! This is another great page turner from Keith Douglass, you won't want it toend.

I bought this book as a supplement to Dick Couch's book, Warrior Elite. I wanted to see the photos of class 228, as told by Dick Couch in the book. Great book, excellent photos.

HOW TO BE A U.S. Navy SEAL - Reveiw
This book is about class 228 doing the BUD/S.(Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL).I thought this sounded like a very interesting and imformative book.It was very interesting because it went into detail of what the SEALs do for training, weapons,etc.What I really liked about it is that it went into great detail about what the phases were. The third phase has alot of information on what weapons they train with.The M4, Mk-75 hose charge, Rocket Launcher and C4 explosives sound really cool. I thought that was very informative. Those things are what kept me entertained whileI read the book.
Another interesting and very fun part of the book was that there were alot of photos of the SEALs doing their training. That is one of the reasons that I gave this book four stars. Another reason is that it went into detail of what the SEALs had to do to quit the class or keep up with the rest of the team. The other two reasons are that it told me about the guns and explosives they use during training and in the battlefield, and that the days that were harder and easier. Such as, "the only easy day was yesterday"
It sounds very tough to be a navy SEAL but one of the coolest jobs in the world.I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for something good to read or looking for information about a really cool career.

a companion to the Warrior Elite
If you're a SEAL fan and have read The Warrior Elite then this is a great companion to the book.It's not a book you read though - this one's all photos and a bit of text.The pictures of SEAL training are the best, actually, I know of NO OTHER book that has as many pics of BUD/S training.You see all the pics of what Dick Couch wrote about in Warrior Elite.Funny thing is that you see the guys from that BUD/S class because their names are written on their clothes but the author makes absolutely no mention of the people in the photos.

Another reviewer said the pics were "old and outdated."What?!They're all the pics that were NOT used in Couch's book and are from one of the latest BUD/S classes, the class that Couch wrote about.Couch's Warrior Elite isn't a picture book - this one is and it's great.

Warrior Elite Reincarnated
Very disappointed.

This book appears to have been thrown together very quickly.I read the Warrior Elite and really enjoyed it.My hopes were similar for the latest Couch book about BUD/S.Instead of giving the reader current pictures from BUD/S classes Couch reused pictures from his Warrior Elite book.The pictures are old and outdated.

Worst of all, reading To Be a Navy SEAL gave me an uncomfortable sense of Deja Vu.Reason being most of the text was "cut and pasted" from the Warrior Elite.

Read the Warrior Elite.Don't waste your time and money on this rude afterthought of a project.

Very Interesting

Terrible writing and vast lack of real content
This is probably the worst book I have ever read about Navy SEALS, SWAT, Special forces, or even the military in general.Mr. Chalker is clearly and overwhelmingly in love with himself.Unusually though, for a narcissist, he leaves out lots of details that would make this book somewhat interesting.He describes lots of little incidents and conversations surrounding his interactions with civilian life, but there are no real stories and details about his military actions.If he is going to fall back on "Secrecy" as a defense on that count, then one has to wonder why eve bother writing the book in the first place?If you aren't planning on giving any account of your training or your operations, then there is nothing to tell.I think a teacher in the South Bronx would be able to write a more compelling story of danger and heroism about her day teaching than this terrible book.I kept waiting for something to happen.

Don't waste your time with this book.

Remembering the good times?
While reading Chalker's book, I had mixed feelings. The book is mainly about Chalker's career with the Teams. He starts off on why he decided to join the Teams, his introduction into Team 6, his brief time with Red Cell, and then his short time as an instructor. Overall, it seems Chalker had a very nice career with the Navy and on top of that he did something only a few people will ever have a chance to do.

Throughout the book, Chalker was vague with descriptions. Chalker never gave full details about his mission, his training, or how he keeps up with his physical fitness. Recurring themes throughout the book were Chalker's time at bars, his time with teammates, and details about teammates. Chalker was even vague about his wife, how they met, or about their children. Throughout his Red Cell description, he gives about one or two pages about the mission, then he goes into great length to talk about barbeques or a trip to the bar or how someone reacted to a fake hostage situation (some of which were funny).

I never really fully understood the meaning behind the book until the epilog. All the stuff Chalker talked about throughout the book had one common theme that wasn't immediately apparent: brotherhood and remembering days with people you cared. Chalker talked a lot about being with his team mates - some of whom died from accidents. I think the greatest thing you can get with any career is being able to look back and remember all the fun times you had with you and your friends - I think that's what Chalker was trying to accomplish in his book.

Overall, the book is pleasing if you can read it until the end. Chalker's book isn't so much about SEAL's missions or about training to become one, it's more or less about being together with people you care about and being able to have a career you can say was "one perfect op."

Disappointing
I was disappointed with this book. Firstly, all `real' missions with the exception of the Grenada invasion are described only in the vaguest terms, apparently to preserve operational secrets. It's lowers the drama and credibility when Chalker describes a mission without even naming the continent on which it took place. Even harmless details like how many SEALs where on a particular raiding team are absent from the accounts of `real' missions.

The breadth of the book is devoted to describing training missions that Team 6 undertook against U.S. Naval bases to test their security. Playing hide-and-seek with security guards and rent-a-cops in training exercises hardly makes for a riveting read.

Chalker also mentions in only passing his experience at SEAL training, or BUD/S, which in the hands of a real writer would easily be worthy of a full book itself. Predictably, he refuses to shed any light on the controversy that landed his mentor Richard Marcinko in jail.

And this isn't an emotional account. We have no real insight into what makes warriors like Chalker tick or the pressures they face. All we know about life outside the Teams is that they drank and brawled a lot. And, oh yet, he got a divorce. (That's almost the way Chalker described it.)

For a more thoughtful and profound look at what it takes to be a member of the U.S. Special Operations community, take a look at Mike Yon's Danger Close. To learn what it takes to become a SEAL, read The Warrior Elite. For an action-packed thriller, stick with one of Marcinko's books.

Good book, but leaves you wanting more...
This is a good book regarding how Mr. Chalker got into and lived in the Seals.The drawback to it though is you know from reading the front cover he was part of Seal Team 6 (the Navy's elite counter-terrorist unit), therefore you expect to read more about them.He did offer insights into their lifestyles and how the job forced them to live.However, if you have read a lot of these books, the one thing you will look for them are actual "situations" to read about.Even if you have to change the "names and places", just tell us the story.Obviously with this being a relatively new group, many of the "stories" most likely remain classified.If there are not that many stories, then shame on the government for not utilizing the resources of the best trained units in the world.We all know there are places that they can be used.Mr. Chalker has written a good book that provides insight into his life in service and he should be commended for it. ... This is a great book!
I first read this book when I was a kid in my early 20's. I lost that copy so I'm buying it again.

This is a great book. It has everything you could want in a book of this type. The author includes personal details about his experiences and his thoughts and feelings at the time. The descriptions of the people and places let us get immersed in the story. You can practically taste the mud. There is plenty of technical detail for those of us who want to know what daily life was like for these heroes and enough action to keep you reading long past bed time. I'm looking forward to reading it again.

It felt like you were there
Darryl Young writes this book with a lot of detail. Sometimes books that are heavy in detail tend to bog you down, like the mud in the author's boots as he trudged along on patrol in Vietnam. However, in this book the detail is such that it makes you feel like you are actually there with him.

The author's writing is very readable and moves along at a good pace. He mixes action with tedium, the way it appears to have been as a SEAL in Vietnam.

The politically correct may have trouble with some of the adjectives used in describing the Vietnamese, but the author stresses in the Author's Note at the back of the book that that is how they talked back then to help them deal with the danger that they were in.

Pretty good
Being on a Navy SEAL and Vietnam kick at the moment, I decided to pick up Darryl Young's The Element of Surprise.I enjoyed reading this book, but felt that Mr. Young was a little repetitive when it came to the majority of the missions that they were involved in.Don't get me wrong, some of their missions were captivating and different from the others...but it's the ones that were similar kind of threw me towards giving this a three star review.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in what the SEALs did in Vietnam under the radar.Some of the events that unfold within Young's book will drop the jaw of the reader.

The Real Deal
A friend referred me to this book who served with the Author in Vietnam. As a former Marine sniper from Nam myself this book is the real deal. The Author gives a little more detail on weapons than I care for but I can overlook that when you read a first person account that takes you there. He gives you the language of the time and his personal feelings in an honest way that most authors dont. If you want a first person account of Navy Seals and the crazy role they play in our wars then this book takes you there and then some. Loved it.

This was my first book that I had ever read that involved Navy SEALs in Vietnam and it hit me like a shock wave.
