Great ideas for new and different felted scarves. Great photography and clear how to instructions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Felted Scarfs
The mid-rating is a result of my own neglect in not reading about this item more carefully.I thought it would be a book that involved knitting, with felting of knitting projects. The projects are wonderful, but do not include knitting.Nice book, but only for those Non-knitter felters.

I am still waiting for my credits to my account which was charged when the books were shipped.Be careful when ordering from Amazon...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on the topic
I don't know what the other reviewers problem is - this is a very helpful book for anyone wanting to attempt nuno felting. It has good step by step instructions with full color photo illustrations. Perhaps it's too basic for the expert, but for folks just beginning, and even those who've done a few projects and want some topping up of technique, I don't know how you can do better. I hate wet felting, but bought Nuno Nouveau because this book made the nuno version of the craft look approachable. The projects are pretty basic, but not everyone is ready to tackle a complex project, and some are really pretty. Once you know how, then you can fly!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very amateurish
I am new to Nuno feltig and was looking forward to being inspired. I was sorely disappointed by this book. Not only did I not find the projects inspiring, I found them quite amateurish. The examples presented in the book showed little finesse either with design or color. I have seen many beautiful examples of nuno by other artists on-line, in galleries and even in my beginner's class. This book did not include any such examples. I much prefer the books Uniquely Felt and Fabulous Felted Scarves which I purchased atthe same time

4-0 out of 5 stars Nuno Felting
Good publication on the Nuno-type of Felting being done so much in New Zealand. If you're a felter and want to branch out to Nuno, this book will give you good information and spring board your creative ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Manipuliting Fabric
This book is more than I expected, it's incredible all the artistic ways to manipulate fabric. It's a way to recognize and learn how to embellish the reproduction of antique doll wear.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece for the fabric artist
This is one of the top ten books that should be on every fabric artist's bookshelf. Authoritative, inspirational, and encyclopedic. The author shows in astonishing detail how to construct texture and 3-D structure with fabric. The cover photo gives you a pretty good idea of what you can eventually make starting with relatively simple sewing techniques. All the examples are worked in simple white muslin, with no contribution (or interference) from color or pattern.

Sections include "Controlled Crushing" (gathering and shirring), "Supplementary Fullness" (ruffles, flounces and fabric insets called godets), "Systematic Folding" (pleats, smocking and tucks), "Filled Reliefs" (cording, quilting, stuffing), and "Structured Surfaces" (darts). The final chapter, "Mixed Manipulations", combines many of the techniques in new ways to make what is essentially fabric sculpture.

Beginners will need some assistance to do some of this, but don't let that stop you. Look through it. Get ideas. Motivate yourself to learn. Even the preface to the book itself encourages the reader to look at the pictures first.

Essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars manipulating fabric
I would recommend this book to any serious...or even not so serious....fabric artist.A very inpressive, all inclusive book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this funky book!
I LOVE this book. While *I* wouldn't necessarily wear all of the projects in this book, I love them because they more closely fit my ideas for recycled clothing, than almost all of the other books of this genre that I've seen.I adore the authors' funky attitudes and approaches to style, and the encouragement and tips.I haven't sewn much in many years, but am trying to improve my skills, and have a blast at the same time.My favorite project is the combo white shirt-denim puffy sleeves selection (so cute, I want to make a bunch).

2-0 out of 5 stars Indifferent
i hate to say that i was disappointed with this book. I own their first one, so i was hoping and expecting for this one to be just as flyy, but it wasn't. i own several deconstruction books and many of their pants, jackets and skirts ideas weren't that creative and flyy like i wanted it to be. I understand that there's nothing new under the son, but i just expected something more edgier (sp?) from them in this one.

I skimmed through the book before i purchased it anyhow at barnes and nobles, so i knew what i was getting into. Since i love accessories, one that was my favorite was the headband. I know there's more, but i haven't picked up the book since i bought it sadly :( . Nonetheless i'm still a fan and supporter of their work and i will continue to be!

4-0 out of 5 stars costumes
nice little book, detailing ways to change existing 20th century clothes into period costumes for theatre.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas.....
I received this book as a gift, and I am grateful for it.It does have some good ideas, some that I hadn't thought about, some different ways of doing things. It helps to think in different ways, do some brain-exercising.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Informative
What I like about this book is that it foregoes any esoterica and costuming theory in favor of good old fashioned practicality. The reader doesn't have to sift through the excruciating snobby details, but instead is given the real lowdown as if visiting with a best friend who happens to be a costume mistress.

This book focuses mainly on costuming for low-budget productions (such as community theatre or a school play), providing useful information and advice on making good-looking costumes from already existing garments and/or thrift store offerings.Information abounds about time period, costume cuts & styles, ways to splurge or skimp on your costumes and still have them look fabulous, as well as details that an inexperienced costumer might overlook (such as using velcro instead of buttons for ease in costume changes).

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is involved in costuming for a production, or anyone who simply loves costumes and loves to recycle old clothes into great new ones.I love this book and have read through it several times just for inspiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars cosstuming on small budget
An excellent book of ideas and help for someone wanting to learn to costume for community theatre. It contains excellent examples of her own work that is easy to follow. It does not overload your brain with uselessinformation.A good starting out book, that aids aperson in organizingthe information , and research problems needed to suceeded in this field. Also a good read for veterans of the design buisness to give freshideasand back up what they have done .After 35 years finally I have foundsomeone who appreciates the use of thrift stores , goodwill and lacecurtains for stage costumes.Thank you Shirley for putting it into wordsand pictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for the busy costume shop
This is an excellent book to keep in the costume shop. I don't know how many times I have had to produce a clerical collar or a quick mob cap for a show when I was really rushed. This book would provide an wonderful resource for those very important items that so often get left to the last minute. It is really great to have a book that you can go to for both collars and spats. The items I have made have turned out very well. I think that Mr. Levine and Ms. McGee have enough experience to know the correct shapes and measurements and I really trust their patterns. The illustrations are amusing and the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the advanced stitcher
While this book covers a broad variety of simple accessories, few of them are beyond the scope of someone with basic draping or flat patterning skills. If you are a novice costumer and want basic patterns, this book is for you. If you are looking for detailed patterns with historical variations, move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for school play costumers!
I do not know how I would have survived without this book.Ten identical bowties? No need to go buy an expensive pattern! It even shows you how to tie them.I could go on.Everything from ties to collars to quivers to hats to aprons - simple patterns, a bit of historical information so you know when these things were worn, prefectly indexed and easy.Thank you to the authors for this marvelous book!

4-0 out of 5 stars I think I'm going to like this book
Just received this book and glanced thru it. What I needed from a review was what exactly was in the book.Mind you I don't know how good the patterns are but it includes a number of hat patterns. Some of the usual- newsboy, chef, mob cap, but a nice coif, deerstalker, and beanie.Lots of neckwear from jabots and cravats to an Egyptian collar and a fischu. There are spat, gaiter, slipper and soft boot patterns. Many of the aprons and purses you can find in commercial pattern catalogues but are nice. You can also find the glove in a commerical pattern but this book also includes mittens and cavalier cuffs.Probably the best thing about this book is the baldric, sword belt, quiver and bow case pattern. Some patterns are difficult, others aren't but not having to bother figuring out even the simplest pattern can save time.Again I have not actually made anything from the book yet but it looks verypromising! Especially since the authors have excellent resumes- Carnegie-Mellon, New York City Ballet, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for all costumers
"Patterns for Costume Accessories: The Solution to Almost Any Costume Accessory Need" is a fabulous find! This is a MUST for everyone who does any kind of costume sewing, be it for a child's school play or a community theatre production, or even a professional production. I make costumes for a wide variety of theatres in my area. I design and build costumes for public and private schools, college and community theatres and some professional theatre work. I have always had a hard time finding just the right boot or bag or other accessory to complete the time period I was working with. This book is a tremdous time saver in that it includes patterns that can be used for children as well as adults. Just enlarge or reduce the pattern pieces (this can even be done on a copy machine to save time)to fit the actor's size. The directions for sewing are standard and are very easy to understand. It is so nice not to have to spend time creating patterns for accessories. This book is such a great find that I am giving some as gifts, so I won't have to lend mine out because I am sure I will be using this book for each production I work with.

The techniques Natalie Bray pioneered and perfected revolutionised dress pattern designing, assisting the rise of the modern fashion industry. Her teaching has had a profound influence on design, production and education and her works are classics: fashions change but the principles of designing patterns in the flat do not.

To be able to understand what is happening when observing a defect is already to have an idea of how to correct it. Here problems of figure, posture and of pattern adjustment are clearly explained so that the dressmaker can, with the confidence that comes with practical experience, learn to identify a defect and choose the best method of dealing with it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning how garments where made in the early 1900's
As others have stated this book is more Edwardian period fashions and not Victorian, although one must remember that many of the same sewing techniques where used since not many people could afford to own a sewing machine. It shows how to sew even stitching by HAND which would be period correct for victorian or Edwardian sewing. Having studied and made civil war period clothing I found this book invaluable to recreate hemms, hand sewn plackards on skirts with hook and eye closures and how to finish the bottom of a boned bodice with NO lining in it. I would have been lost trying to figure all this out on my own. This book has wonderful illistrations of hand sewing and photographs from the early 1900's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Larger print, better binding and it'll get 5 stars.
I've had it a year and the binding is unraveling. The information in this book is very useful. Some improvements to the text, illustrations and binding in the book and it would've made it a 5 star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most complete instructions for Victorian/Edwardian period sewing techniques
I make reproductions costumes for our NYS Historic Preservation Costume Department.I have been trying without success to find an authentic 1885 Norfolk Suit and knickerbockers to replicate for a boy aged 8 years old. This wonderful sewing manual had a detailed description of both.Although it was written in 1905, the sewing techniques have been the same for many, many years. This manual is my most treasured for authentic techniques of the Victorian/Edwardian era.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Victorian
Victoria was queen from 1837-1901.
A reprinted dressmaking book from 1905 should not have it's title changed to include the word "Victorian". It's very misleading.
This book is for the S front pidgeon breasted style of Edwardian clothing only.
It does not even mention bustles, hoopskirts, fitted bodices, or any of the other key elements that defined Victorian costume.

This book does not include any patterns, but it does tell you how to alter and sew garments from existing patterns, and might be useful if you have some vintage patterns that you'd like to adjust and use.

I am highly disappointed and I plan to return this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only Late Victorian Era
This book should say that it only covers techniques from the late Victorian era through the turn of the century.Earlier techniques are not covered, otherwise it is a good book.If you are looking for dressmaking techniques prior to near the turn of the century, look elsewhere... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars usefull
sometimes vague explanations yet overall a great and usefull book if you plan ontailoring clothes the old way. Also good for beginners but make sure you hone your sewing skills first if you're going to make everything by hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the medieval garb hobbiest
This book contains so many little details of clothing manufacture that I was wondering about. While I question that some of the steps may or may not have been done in medieval period, they still make the process easier. This is not a clothing history book, but it is a great help in creating your own approximation of medieval clothing. I would recommend this book to reenactors.

Amazon.com Review
Sewing with vintage textiles provides a unique way to connect with the past while exercising creativity to arrive at something brand new. Fabric magician Jennie Atwood clearly has a knack for turning old tablecloths, hankies, dishtowels, ties, sweaters, and other flea-market finds into exquisite blouses, jackets, pillows, bed linens, table skirts, purses, and children's wear. In Sew Vintage, Atwood offers extensive general directions on design and construction, exploring methods for altering commercial patterns, simple draping techniques on a dress form, finishing details, and further embellishments with beads, buttons, appliqués, and lace. She also explains how to find and clean vintage pieces (wisely cautioning us to steer clear of real antiques) and how to develop a layout that takes best advantage of inherent features, such as running an elaborate tablecloth border along the front and hem of a shirt. Fairly simple step-by-step projects incorporate vintage fabrics in home accessories like potpourri bags and show how to create children's clothing that allows for growing room. Note, however, that the book's major emphasis--garment construction--presumes at least intermediate sewing skill. But anyone with a bit of experience and a desire to look at old fabrics in inventive new ways will enjoy Atwood's confident guidance and the many lovely photos that exhibit her wonderful creations. --Amy Handy ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
I didn't like all of the projects in this book which is probably just a difference of taste. I did enjoy the tips on how to clean vintage fabrics. I loved the christening gown suggestion and the vintage pillows.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Not For Me
This book has good information however the projects appear to be a little dated.I was hoping the projects would focus more on sewing things for the home and not so focused on sewing garments from vintage linen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for vintage textiles
Great Pictures and pattern ideas, The actual patterns are hard to find but there are many similar patterns out there. This book is inspiring with the projects use of fabric. It was worth much more than I paid for it! it is one of my favorite sewing idea books.I just like the author she presents the book as if she is talking to you. I have loaned this book out a couple of times and end up buying another copy for myself and gifting the loaned copy to the borrower since they enjoyed it so. I would definitely say buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sew Vintage
I checked this book out of the library, but it is going on my wish list of books I want in my permanent collection. I had the good fortune to pick up this book right around the same time I was at a yard sale with multiple pieces of vintage embroidered dresser scarves and hankies for 25 cents or less. I am a sucker for these types of items and couldn't resist. But what to do with 4 dresser scarves with the same embroidered butterfly design (although in different colors). Sew Vintage to the rescue! By looking through the book and getting my brain thinking about it, I plan on making a kitchen window valance from the matching dresser scarves. After that I will still have pieces leftover and unfortunately the book has to be returned to the library so I need to get my own copy so as not to forget the great ideas for clothing and soft furnishings that this book covers. The author also showed a nifty way of inserting bias neck binding that resolves the `bump' where the two ends come together and I look forward to trying that technique on my next top.

The book is full of full color photographs showing the different projects and techniques. It covers a lot of ground and shows ways to use the vintage fabrics and laces that YOU find, rather than focusing on trying to recreate the same projects which would be frustrating as no one is likely to find the exact treasures that she found for her book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointed
This books has a number of accessory projects to make with denim; a few use old jeans and others use flat denim fabric. There are detailed instructions and patterns are included.

I was disappointed with this book because I had expected more ideas for using worn-out jeans. I also didn't like what most of the projects looked like.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I wanted at a great price!
I found the book I had been searching for in like new condition for only $.41!I am well satisfied with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
I've had this book for years and have used the principles in it to make many sweatshirts into comfortable cardigans. They are wonderful for slipping on and off easily when you have arthritis and aren't as heavy as a regular jacket. By coordinating fabric you can make a cardigan that matches your pants and skirts. Using the ideas in this book there are many ways to adapt and make nice looking cover-ups for disabled people who have special dressing needs such as larger neckholes, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book gave tips on how to revise sweatshirts in ways that I should have thought of years ago but never did. Well worth the price-in fact, it was a steal! I would recommend this book to anyone who can sew.
