comprehensive and accessable
I recently bought Fast Facts-Sexually Transmitted Diseases-inadequate ,not even suitable for an undergrad,but the book under review is a horse by another colour,its all here for the non-specialist, particularly helpful is its advice and algorithms for patients whose symptoms persist in spite of repeated clear tests,the only minor complaint was that it did not address the poorly named male pelvic congestion syndrome in its discussion of ongoing symptomatology where a clear cut cause is being elusive, however maybe that is one for the urologists rather than venereologists.An invaluable primary care reference. ... I read this wonderful book today and find it simple,easy to read,color illustrations are there with the text.I have read this book during my Genitourinary Examination and found it very useful,this is the main reason that I bought this book.I recommend this book to all the doctors related to genitourinary medicine,dermatologists and venereologist.It is also useful for the G.P's and medical students so that they can get a basic idea about the sexually transmitted diseases and their presentations.At the end I would like to congratulate Dr.H.Hunter Handsfieldon writing such a wonderful book.

Wonderful information
I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'Sare one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures)So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did. ... In Damaged Goods ?, Dr. Nack combines the tools of a rigorous social scientist with the voice of an empathetic advocate to convey the experiences of women living with chronic STD's.
She provides readers with a medical, historical and political background to understand HPV and the way in which HPV vaccination campaigns have been constructed. Nack argues that STD's are strongly stigmatizing to women and that the focus of HPV campaigns has been on presenting the vaccine as a way of preventing cervical cancer instead of portraying the vaccine as an immunization against sexually transmitted disease. She critically questions the consequences of this portrayal and gives policy and research suggestions to improve national public health treatments of this disease.

What makes Damaged Goods ? unique is that it seamlessly accomplishes a multitude of tasks: While providing statistical data, historical, political and medical facts, it focuses on the personal experiences of women living with chronic STD's. In this way, Nack bridges a gap that is often found between an empirical, academic undertaking and the accessibility of empirical research to women who seek to understand their diagnosis and their daily experiences with their disease.
A further strength of this book is that Nack uses her empirical findings and criticism in a constructive way: She gives specific policy and research recommendations for improvements to sexual health education, doctor-patient communication and interaction style. Finally, she questions the HPV-vaccine campaign for presenting itself as a cervical cancer vaccine and disassociating itself with STD stigma. Although some families might be more willing to encourage their daughters to get vaccinated when the term 'sexually transmitted disease' is not mentioned, are national health campaigns avoiding the realities of STD's and the sexual behavior of young women? Are they leading Americans to believe that HPV causes all cervical cancers? These are questions that Nack discusses, thereby initiating an important dialogue about the national understanding of HPV and personal encounters of this prevalent, stigmatizing and all-too-little-talked about disease.

Insightful and honest
This book is no doubt an open account of attitudes held socially and internally by the women who live with incurable STD's. Nack has created an outlet for frustration, fear, anxiety, and a floodgate of emotions held by these women and also serves as support to others that may seek solace from shared experiences. Not only is this book helpful to those women and men who need allies in the struggle to regain their sexuality, but also to those loved ones who may need help to understand what social stigma is, and how to support appropriately. I encourage women and men who live with these conditions to read all the material they can both research and honest accounts that Nack has brought here. This is ethnography at its best.

Not a good resource!
When I found out that I had an STD this was the first book I read. I would never recomend this book to someboy who is trying to figure out how to deal with the diagnosis of an STD and become comfortable and confidant again. I found the book very negative. It was hard to get through because I was already extremely emotional. I don't know what I was expecting from a book with this title, but what I got did not make me feel any better about my diagnosis. I would skip this book and stick to more factual books about specific diseases, and healing.

Insightful Book!
After reading this book for a class, I was amazed at how insightful and helpful this book is to not only someone living with HPV or HSV, but also to all of those people who they encounter and are possibly affected by it (significant others, doctors, parents, friends, etc.). Adina Nack nails every single feeling and account of women going through this painful experience, and brings it into the light of sympathy, not judgement. The stigma that goes along with this situation is wrong, hurtful and unfair. Nack's efforts to de-stigmatize this problem are impressive and encouraging and her words really have something for everyone to benefit from. The jokes need to stop. The ignorant comments need to stop. The stigma needs to stop. This book is definitely amazing and should be experienced by everyone because everyone is affected in one way or another.

Food for the Heart and Mind
Reading a book that balances logos and pathos in such a compelling way is a rare pleasure indeed. Dr. Nack's study on STD's integrates scholarship and heart so seamlessly that the research presents itself with a sense of emotional and social urgency: Help women to empower themselves in the face of personal and medical challenges, and remove the stigma associated with STD's by challenging the public's perspectives. Dr. Nack's auto-ethnography regarding her experience with an STD further evidences her deep personal investment in the subject and connects her with the dozens of women who share their stories in interviews. Possessing little knowledge on the subject of STD's, I expected Damaged Goods to be somewhat "over my head." It is indeed expertly-researched and scientifically sound, but without pretense. clear thorough facts
As a Public Health professional, I have read many books about sexually transmitted diseases over the years. I recommend this one (the second edition)for professionals and interested laypersons. I believe it has the most complete and up to date information.

Sexually Transmitted Disease by Marr
This book explains the male and female anatomy with particular
emphasis on the causes and prevention of classic sexually
transmitted diseases and disease processes. The author
discusses herpes, lice, warts, yeast infections, testicle
bacteria, gonorrhea, prostrate infections, urinary tract
infections and a whole host of infectious diseases. There is
an exhaustive discussion of safe sex which includes:
o monogamy
o abstinence
o testing and checkups
o avoidance of risk behaviors
o outercourse
o chlamydia bacteria and special tests PCR, LCR

This book is valuable for anyone travelling overseas with an
expectation of engaging multiple sex partners. The author
explains the major disease processes, prevention strategies,
testing, diagnosis and modern treatment modalities. The book is
worth the price if you have questions about sexual contact and
the risks/precautions involved.

If use is any indication...
I am a consumer health librarian, and I keep a pretty close eye on my book collection to see what is being used.Although this book has never checked out in the 10 months we've had it, several times a week it moves around: it gets misshelved, set on top of the bookcase, taken into our waiting or reading area, left on a chair, etc.What this says to me is that there is a real demand for this information, but people are not inclined to check the book out and take it home (who wants to be spotted on the bus carrying a book on STDs?).So, people are sneaking a peek at the information when they can.

Besides being heavily used, this is a fine book that covers the full gamut of STDs, including many that I had not heard of (and I'm pretty savvy about medical terms and disease names), and helpful sections on genital anatomy, "What is 'safe sex'?", a symptom key, what to expect in an examination, and a section on how open communication can help save your life and health in a sexual situation.I wouldn't call the writing style fascinating, but it gets the information across in spades, and does not talk down or confuse.The book also has the full complement of appendices: resource list, glossary, bibliography (largely clinical medical articles), and an excellent index.This is a seriously good consumer health book, and I wish they were all like this, regardless of topic.

The Hard Truth
I read the book for a research paper for one of my biology classes and was very impressed with it. The writer successfully explained in layman's terms the harsh truth about STDs. I recommend it to all. Everyone needs to be aware of the world we live in and we need to know the price we can pay for the decisions we make. I live in Miami, where the sex scene is everywhere: music, the club scene, movies, the media. You need to know before the bombardment of sexhits you, so that when you make your decisions, or mistakes, you are prepared.
