Auszug: Freeware (from "free" and "software") is computer software that is available for use at no cost or for an optional fee. Software referred to as freeware is almost always proprietary. Software that is commercial is occasionally referred to as payware. The term freeware was coined by Andrew Fluegelman when he wanted to sell a communications program named PC-Talk that he had created but for which he did not wish to use traditional methods of distribution because of their cost. Fluegelman actually distributed PC-Talk via a process now referred to as shareware. Current use of the term freeware does not necessarily match the original concept by Andrew Fluegelman. Software classified as freeware is normally fully functional for an unlimited time with no cost, monetary or otherwise. Freeware can be proprietary software available at zero price. The author usually restricts one or more rights to copy, distribute, and make derivative works of the software. The software license may impose restrictions on the type of use including personal use, individual use, non-profit use, non-commercial use, academic use, commercial use or any combination of these. For instance, the license may be "free for personal, non-commercial use". Accordingly, freeware may or may not be free and open source software and, in order to distinguish, the Free Software Foundation asks users to avoid calling "freeware" free software. From the supplier: The Office of Academic Computing (OAC) at Ferris State University (FSC) in MI, oversees microcomputers on campus and offers training in computer skills to Ferris faulty and staff. A major component of the training workshops is the kit of software tools each participant receives. Cost is a primary factor in selecting the word processing, spreadsheet, and database manager programs for the kits. Cost prompted FSU to use freeware-shareware programs that can be distributed and cost only a nominal fee to become a registered user. The OAC has more than 18,000 freeware-shareware programs on file and has selected ExpressCalc Version 3.1 as its toolkit spreadsheet, PC-Write Version 2.7 as its word processor, and PC-File+ Version 1.0 as its database manager.

4-0 out of 5 stars run a virus scanner and use a firewall?!
Colarik's advice is pretty sensible and presented in as nontechnical a manner as possible. I don't think anyone can quarrel about the proferred advice. Though I'm a little dubious of "Executive" in the book's title. Perhaps he's trying to appeal to the ego of the reader. Or perhaps it's just a way to underline that this is not a specialised technical book.

There are explanations of various types of attacks that your computer might meet. And protective, largely preventive countermeasures on your part. For this, the best advice might be to install an antivirus scanner and regularly run it. Along with having it connect to its vendor's website, to download the latest virus signatures. Another good advice is to consider running a firewall. These days, you might not even need a dedicated device. Software firewalls are now quite refined. ... Read more
