Product Description

Submarines have progressed from the crude steam-driven craft of the Civil War to silent nuclear transports that can cruise for months without surfacing and carry intercontinental missiles mounting multiple warheads. Go back to the earliest experimental submersibles, the notorious German U-Boats of World War II that nearly destroyed the Allies' efforts, and follow the progress of over 280 other types. Notations are also included on civilian uses of subs as well as every important underwater weapon, for a truly comprehensive reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUBMARINE FACTS
In my opinion anybody who reads submarine fiction or nonfiction should have a copy of Tom Clancy's SUBMARINE: A Guided Tour a Nuclear Warship. Not only is it a great source of information about everything related to submarines and submarine warfare, it's also an easy read. In typical Tom Clancy style you get the feeling that you are right there aboard one of the navy's most powerful undersea weapons platforms. This book is a great one-volume encyclopedia for submarines and their on board crews and equipment.

Of particular interest to me was the last few chapters where the author discusses a variety of submarine battle tactics. Submarine Rescue, Mine Warfare Intelligence Gathering, Reconnoitering an Enemy Harbor, Execution of a TLAM-C Strike on an Enemy Airfield and Precision Strike: Tomahawk Attacks, are only a few of the tactics included in this revealing and interesting book.

Don't be fooled because this book was published in 1993. Its contents are still applicable to most of the fictional submarine thrillers on the market today.I give the book my highest recommendation.

Product Description
An enthralling account of the Lusitania's sinking that examines the myth and mystery of the maritime disaster. The story of the Lusitania is remarkable in the annals of maritime history. State of the art when she went into service, the first express liner equipped with steam turbines, the ship restored British supremacy on the North Atlantic passenger routes and became a commercial success. Her sinking in May 1915 by a German U-boat was widely publicized, and from that day the ship's history has been filled with legend and speculation. David Ramsay unravels those myths to give a clear and enthralling account of the people involved, potentates and presidents, ambassadors and ministers of state, bankers, shipping magnates, spies, and not least the captain, William Turner. Based on detailed research, this new book includes an extensive, exciting account of the history and circumstances surrounding the sinking. Ramsay's compelling style will intrigue the general reader as much as it will the historian and enthusiast. Map, 18 illustrations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lusitania: Dense and Plodding
Author David Ramsay's account of the sinking of The Lusitania is one of a glut of maritime disaster books to appear in recent years (and, indeed, was released almost simulateously with Diana Preston's book on this particular disaster).Obviously, this is a hot publishing trend.Alas, it is also one that could stand better editing.Ramsay gamely provides the full sweep of The Lusitania tragedy, including detailed accounts of the political intrigue that surrounded it.Unfortunately, his prose is so, uh, lifeless, that the book is barely readable.Ramsay's approach might be fine for historians, but readers who are looking for the kind of lively narrative history that has become so popular recently should look elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lusitania Sinks Again!
There is a myth that the Lusitania was the reason America entered World War One. False! Borrowing on this fact most authors assume the reader wants to read about the war. This book is not a book so much on the Lusitania, but more a behinds the scenes view of what went on in the war. This has been covered time and time again in other books. Anyone reading the book who has read another Lusy book will be saying, 'Don't tell me what I do know; tell me what I don't know' Unfortunately, there is hardly anything in this book that a basic student of history will not know.Only marginal new info on the ship, the rest is just a retread of what can be found in other books. He calims that Aileen Harris was a survivor, yet she was not aboard at all; not even Aileen Harris. She was not married to Dwight Harris at the time. A relative of Mrs. Stephens claims ther body went down with the Arabic, when in fact, it went down with the Hesperian. It is not hard to check where some of the survivors were headed to get their survivor accounts. (besides the usual NY Times). Like most authors, Ramsay depends on the more ewasily obtainable sources. Again, tell me what I don't know, not what I do know. The author gets points for actually tracking down a few relatives which others authors like Preston and Butler didn't do, but mostly the book is still not the definitive book on the ship. It's just barely about the ship! Just another WW1 over view.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much-needed account.
If ever a ship was taken to a Nation's heart it was the Lusitania. State-of-the-art when launched, the very first passenger liner to be equipped with steam turbines, the fastest Liner on the North Atlantic passenger routes, popular with passengers and a commercial success. In short, this ship had everything.

All that changed in May 1915, however, when, she was torpedoed by a German U-boat.With the loss of the Titanic just 3 years earlier - and still very fresh in peoples minds, this was seen as one of the most diabolical and savage acts of WW1 and even helped bring America into the War.

What followed, therefore, was propaganda the like of which has never been repeated."Rescues" were rigged for the camera and acted out using adults and children pretending to be dead and photographed prostrate across white lifeboats with "LUSITANIA" on over-large letters written on the side. Even the German authorities added to this pile of misinformation by making equally false assertions claiming sabotage. Little wonder, this magnificent four-funnelled ship was to become the stuff of legend.

This hardback book measures approx. 9½" x 6½" containing over 300 pages of vital information in which David Ramsay does an excellent job of unravelling the many myths and legends in order to give a clear account of a dreadful act of war.In so doing he provides the reader with a most objective account of the history of this magnificent ship and the result is a very good read.

Remarkable advances in terms of Technical Diving have brought the Lusitania within reach of the Scuba Diver and, lying at a depth of almost 300 feet, she has already been visited by those at the leading edge of such underwater exploration. For those who plan to follow in these footsteps (or should that be fins?) this book contains all the background information required.

This is a nice reference to the old fleet boat.I've been aboard the Cod and really enjoy the WWII era subs. The Cod is the only fleet boat that is in its original WWII configuration. This makes a great companion book to other fleet boat material as one can use it as a map to get an idea of what other authors are talking about when they make references to certain compartments etc.All Fleet boats were different and there will be exceptions to this material, but in general this is a well done document. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent record of all U Boat activities over 10 years.
At first sight this does not look like a 5 star book. It is, however, an essential addition to the bookshelf of anyone seriously interested in all U Boat activities during the 10 year period 1935-1945.

Let me be quite clear. If you want to read a good story about a specific U Boat operation, this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you need to find a quick reference to, say, U 85 (picked at random), all the information is here. That includes; Type of U Boat, Flotilla, details of her only commander, dates and areas of her 7 operational patrols, ships sunk (with dates, names and tonnages) and finally date and details of the U-Boat's loss.

Such information is repeated for every single U Boat operated by Germany during the period in question which makes this book an invaluable asset for all those, as I say, with a serious interest in the subject.

There are very few photographs because this is not a picture book. The Appendices, however, do include profiles for different U boat types, names and details of recipients of the Knights Cross, notes on resupply at sea, areas of operations and more additional fascinating information.

Altogether, well researched and an excellent record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on the K-Boats
The K-Boats were an attempt to build a fleet of "underwater cruisers"-- huge submarines that could travel on the surface and operate with surface vessels, rather than alone (as had been the norm) and then dive to attack, thus increasing protection of the surface vessels. The key was that they were equipped with steam powered surface turbines rather than standard diesel engines (but were equipped with electric motors for undersea use.) The "Ks" were the largest, most powerful submarines built until the advent of the nuclear boat fleets in the 1950s.

The vessels were plagued with disasters-- crewmembers were killed in virtually all of them. They had been posted to picket duties, with the result that the crews were bored with little to do; they were undertrained and the submarines incorporated technology that was completely unfamiliar.

This book traces the boats from their genesis to their end. They were originally planned to counter Germany's high speed, ocean-going submarines. After WWI, when the files of the German High Seas Fleet were investigated by the British, they found that Germany had no such submarines and had never planned any. The K Boats were developed to counter a threat which had never existed at all.

Readers with an interest in naval submarine history and the way in which politics determines naval decision making should read this book. In addition to text it contains a host of photographs of K Boats underway and a fold-out of a schematic of a K. An excellent read.

Nate reluctantly agrees to help David build the weapon of war -- dubbed the American Turtle. Although he's terrified of water and worried about getting caught, when unlikely circumstances put Nate at the center of the action, he must face the murky waters of his fears head-on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Grade: A-
For anyone who likes history, "Attack of the Turtle" is going to be a treat. Drew Carlson has crafted an exciting story around the creation of the first submarine ever used in battle, and his use of historical detail and figures from history (including Ben Franklin & George Washington) during the Revolutionary War is well-done and believeable. The main character is not based on any real-life person, but provides a recognizable anchor for any kids reading this book. The battle scenes are good, the dialogue is excellent, and 'Attack of the Turtle' is a good book to either read aloud, or have 4-7th graders read on their own.
