Baby Signs
I love this little book!And my one year old grandson has no problem learning these signs and communicating his needs to his parents and me without uttering a word!It is amazing to me how easily he learns and how much less frustrated he is, being able to communicate easily and clearly with his hands.

Where is baby?
My son is 5 and learning how to read. He hears quite well but is speach delayed. He was so delighted to use his signing skills and put them together with the written word. This makes him so proud and he wants to read his new book every day. I hope there are more to come!!

perfect for learning and fun
I bought this book after sifting through many trying to determine what would be a good book for my hard of hearing 18 month old that wears hearing aids and is starting to say some words.I wanted to stimulate speech by doing a fun activity that involved reading and I wanteda book that depicted sign language,not just a book that I would read and sign as we were already doing.I showed this book to my sons speech therapist (after he had already given the thumbs uplifting all the flaps and signing with it, train, baby, daddy), and she agreed that it has it all,shows a child using signs, instructs how,asks where's the...? which is what she always tells me to do to encourage an answer,flaps which are totally age appropriate for 18 months and fun, again encouraging to say the name of the thing under the flap.I would say its a must for anyone that is signing, hearing,hard of hearing,or deaf that is 12 months and up, my older kids like it too. ... Baby Signs
I got this book when my granddaughter was born and we did all the signs.She is now 28 months old and knows about 100 signs.I buy this book now for all my friends when they have children/grandchildren.It's wonderful!

Nothing like talking before you can speak!
This is a marvelous little book and quick to the point. My twin granddaughters and grandson were using this
book from the time they were born via their mother.They learned to communicate their needs before they could
speak.I wish I had the sign language knowledge for my children back in the day.Also it is easy to tuck into
a diaper bag.

Ok in theory...
It's a cute book, and it's ok in theory. However, when I came to the "dog" page I had to raise an eyebrow. It doesn't use the ASL sign for dog, instead it teaches to stick your tongue out and pant like a dog. Also some of the illustrations for some signs (such as all done, etc) made it look as though the sign would be produced wrong if you tried to copy if off of the picture.

Perhaps that was what the author meant to do - teach some ASL signs as well as some baby signs/gestures. But one of my pet peeves is books that teach the wrong signs.

She Loves it, I Find it Lacking
This book does a good job of teaching baby as well as parent how to do some basic signs (dog, cat, diaper, water, all done, milk, etc.).The pictures grab my daughter's attention and have since she was 5 months old (she is almost 9 months and still loves it).She already does a gesture very similar to 'milk' when she is hungry.

The book itself is well-made and a size my daughter favors - not too long, not too big, not too thick.Nice colors that catch her attention.

However, I find the choice of words to be a bit strange.I don't see why a baby needs to learn the sign for the word 'diaper', but not the sign for the word 'wet' or 'dirty' or even 'potty'.Why teach 'water' or 'milk' when one should learn 'hungry' or thirsty' first?The words 'yes' and 'no' are not in this book, and they are words we are teaching our daughter and she is already responding to the signs.The choice of teaching 'cat' and 'dog' I find a bit strange for not every household has these pets.Though my daughter adores this book, I think the selection of signs to be lacking and feel there are more useful signs out there for your little one.

Not helpful enough
While the book gives some signs, there are certainly others that would be good to have in there, like "please" and "thank you", for instance.Also, you can look up signs on-line.In addition to the signs I was hoping to find out how to best introduce them to my baby.I've been working with "more" and "all done" at meal time for over 2 weeks and he still isn't using the signs.I have no idea if I'm introducing them the right way or not. ... You Can Learn Sign Language
This is a nice well-illustrated book for young children ages 6-8. The photographs are colorful and most are easy to understand.I chose this particular book as a text for my sign language classes. I do not, however, agree with some of the signs. Some of the hands in the numbers section on the clock are facing backwards as if the person is signing to himself. The sign for "what" is not used in the question "What is your name, but rather a gesture (a shrug) has replaced the word. Although I disagree with a few of the signs chosen in this text, basically the book is very good in layout, design, and making the subject interesting for children.

Good primary basic booklet
This little book is handy to learn the most basic of signs.
It is simple to understand, and I used it to help teach mentaly impaired folks to communicate with our new deaf family member.It is not a conversational teacher, but as said, good and easy to learn the alphabet, colors, numbers, & simple questions. The pictures are clear, but scattered accross the pages.

Great Beginner's Guide!
This book, while small, is packed full of everyday, useful phrases in ASL! The colorful photos make the motions clear and easy to replicate. The format also entices children to explore the book and ask questions! I recommend this book for any beginner who would like to pick up a few useful signs! They should turn this into a small series!

I like everything but the layout.
This is not a comprehensive textbook on sign language, but then again, it doesn't purport to be.What more can a person expect in 48 pages?

The subject matter is conveniently araged in categories, such as colors, sports, faily relatives, and emotions.When a sign bears some relation with the item being signed, the author makes certain that the reader notices the relationship.

The book is replete with colorful cartoons and color photographs of children performing signs.However, I wish that the layout artist had read the Dartnell Advertising Handbook, which states that no more than 5 elements should be included on a page.The titles, text blocks, photographs, and cartoons are superimposed on each other and scattered helter-skelter.I agree with the anonymous reviewer of July 5, 2003.

One more concern: many of the signs involve signing the initial letter.The book purports to deal with ASL, but this factor makes it look suspiciously like Signed English.

We Can Read Your Sign
For both adults and toddlers, this is a very user-friendly "keep it simple, keep it fun" introduction to American Sign Language.When my four-year-old grandson's speaking ability was damaged after an accident over two years ago, all members of my nuclear family acquired from Amazon several copies of this book in order to become familiar with basic statements and with the sign alphabet.

Thanks to a lot of therapy and special education, his speaking ability is very much improved now and will probably be close to fully restored by the time he enters Kindergarten.Nevertheless, we always know where our copies are in the event we need to ready ourselves to communicate to hearing impaired persons.

Learning to sign
My kindergartener has been learning a few signs at school and I remembered this book from my childhood and wished I still had mine. I'm glad I can find a used copy. As a kid of 7 or 8 I taught myself the alphabet and a few other signs. I never had an opportunity to use the signs myself (except when spelling out words in front of my children like 'candy' or 'movie'!) I look forward to sharing this book with my son, and I also wish they would make a new printing.

It's a shame it's out of print
The first two pages are of Linda Bove showing the signs for the alphabet.Each page after that is based on a theme (for example: "In the morning" has pictures of Linda doing words like "Good, Morning, Alarm clock, window, comb, toothpaste, mirror..." followed by another page with drawings of Sesame street characters and settings with each of those signs in it and something along the line of "How many things in this picture can you sign?" (with all of those things in it).

The themes are "In the morning", "The family", "School days", "Colors", "on the farm", "playground fun", "Opposites", "Action words", "People in the neighborhood", "Spring", "Summer", "autumn", "Winter", "Utensils and food", "In the woods", "How people get around", "In the Jungle", "The way you feel", and "Nighttime".The final two pages of the book are dedicated to signing the numbers 1-10.

It is a fantastic book and I hope they decide to start printing it again so my friends can stop looking for discarded library copies. ;)

activities are engaging to kids
This book has about 20 activities to do. Most are appropriate for ages 8 and up, although I did some of the games with kids in first grade and they loved it, just had a shorter attention span and might need a little help. The book is small and fits in little hands nicely. The cover is bright and inviting. It's not an expensive book, and I recommend it as a warm up activity as part of a lesson or class for kids.

NOTa beginner book
This is more of an intermediate book and not well written at that.The most horribly written section (if I had to choose one) is on sports signs.The instructions claim that "Each sign clearly demonstrates its sport."To whom I have no idea.Maybe a few of the signs were obvious but the rest were extremely confusing.My husband, who is a genius, could not figure some of them out.

If you have an older child who is learning SEE this might be an ok book but if you are truly working with a beginner, this will only frustrate you. ... Read more

Love this book!!
I got several of the other books that this same company has made for baby signs and this is my favorite.I was seeking a resource for signing with animals and this one covers all of them!Thank you for making its a board book too!What a genius idea!The illustrations are perfect and my daughter loves to look at all the animals and watch the signs. Great book
This book is awesome! My two year old is hearing impaired and I ordered most of the books in this series. I am impressed with the the way the author and illustrators have put this book together. It is the easiest book I have found to teach not only myself and my daughter sign, but also for my other school aged children to learn as well. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wishes to learn sign.

A lot of signs to learn
This book was very helpful in teaching me to do animal signs so I could teach my toddler.My son is 20 months, and I've had this book for about 3 months.He's picked up about 5 or 6 signs that he can do on his own, and several more that he recognizes.

The book is much larger than I expected, and has more signs than I was expecting.It is a board book, so it stands up well to a toddler.The instructions for doing the signs are clear, and they give you an index of hand shapes on the back so you know what they are referring to.

The signs include pets (cat, dog, fish, lizard, snake, hampster, bird, etc.), as well as animals you might see at the zoo (zebra, tiger, elephant, penguin, etc.), and animals you might see outside (spider, butterfly, duck, bee, bear, squirrel, rabbit, etc.).The only animal it was missing that we commonly see in our neighborhood is moose, but I learned that sign somewhere else (and my son uses it regularly).

I would recommend this book to anyone teaching a child ASL, especially since toddlers really react to animal signs.Dog, cat & lizard were some of the first signs my son did! (We have 2 dogs, 2 cats & 2 lizards as pets).

What a wonderful book!
I work with infants and use baby sign to help the children communicate with us. This book is just wonderful! Great pictures and simple gestures help you and the child lean the signs for animals like cat, dog, fish, hamster, lizard, mouse, and the list goes on and on. What I like about this book is that they try and stay with familiar animals and animals the children may have had actual contact with. There are a few like "panda" that are a bit exotic, but still something you could find at the zoo.

This is a good introduction to signing with your baby.Along with giving you signs to use it also has a lot of background information about sign and the pros and cons of using sign with your baby.I

A Very Helpful Book
I was ready to teach sign language to my daughter but I didn't know where to begin so I bought three different books including this one. All of the books taught me some things but I think this book was the easiest to use. It has a lot of signs and tells you when to introduce them to your baby and it has photos of the signs plus a DVD to show you how each one is done. That was really helpful. The only sign my daughter has done yet is milk but I know she'll be doing more soon. ... Read more

BETTER BUY
I was taking American Sign Language in college.I needed a textbook/manual for the course.I, being short on funds, began looking for a less expensive book than the one offered for the course.When I hit Amazon I found this book.I bought it and took it to class.My prof. said it was a better book than what was on their list, but she did not have control over the list.I used it, and passed my class.She was happy and I was happy. And I saved about $29 off the price of the book on the list.It was a great deal.

excellent product, textbook quality
I am taking a sign language class and my instructor uses this book as her text.It is a great book and I have even heard of people using it on their own to learn!Some of the signs are outdated but I think there is a new edition coming out this year.In addition to signs, sentences, fingerspelling and structure, this book teaches some deaf culture which is very useful when learning sign language.Excellent product!

A must have for any ASL Student
This book is very easy to use.All the photographs are large and easy to understand.I am actually taking ASL from Irene Duke at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA and she and her deaf son have told us about the problems she had to go through to communicate and how glad she is to have written this book.This book has taught me so much a must have!!!!

A Good Introduction
As a beginner student of ASL, this is one of the text books used in my course. I can understand the previous comment that certain signs can be mistaken for totally unrelated signs (i.e. the sign for work) - but understand, many, many signs are very close to those with unrelated meanings. It's hand position and "inflection" (body language and facial expression) that is paramount.Regional differences also come into play, and this is where your instructor will be an invaluable part of your learning experience.
Enrolling in a course, or finding private instruction is an important and necessary resource when learning this awesome language.
The information about, history of, and introduction to Deaf culture is basic, but gives one an introduction nonetheless.
Understanding the bare basics of sign etiquette, including hand position, eye contact, body language and facial expression is very important in order to move on to meaningful conversation.ASL is not just hand signals!
That being said -I find this book to be a very easy and logical step by step way to build a solid foundation in ASL.
By the fourth and fifth chapters, you are signing basic yet meaningful and commonly used signs.
Overall, I find this book a very good choice for my intro to ASL.
The information is presented in an easy to understand and easy to execute manner.
There is no substitute for actual visual instruction, however, even without being enrolled in classroom study I feel this book is well worth buying for anyone interested in the basics of Deaf culture, the history of the language and building a solid foundation on which to expand on should you decide that ASL is something you want to pursue.
It is my opinion that knowledge of the above is of monumental importance when learning this beautiful visual language.
Although this book only covers the basics, it does so in a manner in which sets you up for further understanding as you move through your learning experience.
A good introduction to ASL with the much needed background foundation.
I've moved quickly and successfully through the chapters building my vocabulary, understanding ASL grammar and retaining many commonly used conversational signs.
