Excerpt: The Julian March (Croatian and Slovene: Julijska krajina; Italian: ; German: ; Venetian: ; Friulian: ; Latin: ) is a former political region of Southeastern Europe on what are now the borders between Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The Italian name for the Region, "Venezia Giulia" (or "Venetia Iulia", meaning "Julian Venice"), was invented as late as 1863 by the linguist Graziadio Isaia Ascoli from Gorizia, who sought to bring together under one name all of the territories of the Habsburg Empire claimed by Italy. Graziadio Isaia Ascoli considered the territory of the Roman Italia province of Venetia et Histria ("Venetia and Istria" to be a geographical-cultural unit, subdivided into three parts: The name 'Julian March' comes from the Julian Alps, which would in this view form the natural north-eastern border of Italy. The term was coined to denote the region limited by the Soa river and the Gulf of Trieste in the west, the Julian Alps in the north and north-east, and Carniola and Liburnia to the east, thus including all of the Kras Plateau and most of the Istrian peninsula. After 1866, when the Veneto and most of Friuli were unified with the Kingdom of Italy, Ascoli's term Julian March began to assume a political connotation. Many Italian irredentists started using it as an alternative name for the Austrian Littoral region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, thus highlighting its supposed geographical and cultural affinity to the other two 'Venetias'. Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Slovenia," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Slovenia in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Slovenia when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Slovenia, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Gulf of Piran or Piran Bay (Slovene: , Croatian: or , Italian: ) is located in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, and is a part of the Gulf of Trieste. It was named after the town of Piran, and its shores are shared by Croatia and Slovenia. It is delimited by the line connecting Cape Savudrija (Savudrijski rt) in the south to the Cape Madona (Rt Madona) in the north and measures around 19 square kilometres (7.3 sq mi). Since the 1990s, the name Bay of Savudrija (Savudrijska vala) has also been used in Croatia. On the eastern Slovenian coast lay towns of Piran, Portoro and Lucija. On the southern Croatian coast are tourist camps of Crveni vrh and Kanegra, built in the 1980s. The main river flowing into the gulf is Dragonja, whose mouth goes along the border. Along the mouth of Dragonja lie the Seovlje saltpans, covering the area of 650 hectares (1,600 acres). The Gulf area has been a theatre of a maritime and land border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia since their proclamation of independence in 1991. The maritime border between Yugoslav republics was never defined. Following World War II, the area extending from the north of Trieste to the river Mirna in the south was a part of the Free Territory of Trieste. In 1954, the Territory was dissolved and the area was provisionally divided between Italy and Yugoslavia, and formally annexed by the Treaty of Osimo in 1975. Territories were divided between Croatia and Slovenia, both constitute members of Yugoslav federation, by Paris Peace Treaty (1947) and London Memorandum (1954) by ethnic principle established by 1945 census. Excerpt: Zelénci is a spring and eponymous nature reserve near the town of Kranjska Gora, in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia. It is the source of the river Sava Dolinka, a tributary of the Danube. At Zelenci, water from the underground stream Nadia (originating in the Planica valley) re-emerges through the porous bottom of a two-m deep lake, whose waters are noted for their deep, brilliant green. The spring and its surrounding area are named after this colour, zelen meaning "green" in Slovene and "Zelenci" being its possessive plural.) The Upper Sava Valley is the result of action by the Planica glacier, creeping from beneath Jalovec, Ponc and Mojstrovka. The area contains many lake sediments, suggesting that Zelenci is a remnant of a once much larger Lake Koren, created by the retreat of the glacier, which carried along much debris. In retreat, the bulk of it was deposited at what is now Podkoren, damming the Sava with the Koren Pass, which hemmed in glacial melt and formed an extensive lake. The Sava then tunneled through this natural dam, lowering the water level of lake Koren until only Zelenci and its surrounding wetlands were left. Zelenci is considered the beginning of the longer of the two sources of the Sava, the longest Slovene river at 219 km. The spring is actually the re-emergence of an underground creek called Nadia, whose first source is near the mountain hut at Tamar, but which spends most of its course underground after disappearing at the Ledine gravel basin near Ratee. Observing pathsThe porous chalk of the Zelenci lakebed permits a constant upwelling of groundwater in the form of tiny j...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14569787 ... Read more
