As a mother of three very special children I absolutely love this book.James Marshall shows in this short story how being what everyone else considers "different" or "not normal" is not a bad thing. Each person, no matter what their ability, has an important purpose in this life. This book conveys that sentiment in a way that is not condescending to those who are affected by what others consider to be "handicaps." ... Each spread is transformed into a box displaying the extraordinary colours, shapes and textures of a writhing, coiling snake. Snakes have a very simple design, yet their variety is immense. The reticulated python is heavy bodied, while the green cat snake is thread thin. The rainbow boa sparkles with iridescence and the mangrove snake flaunts startling warning colours. The text design works with the shape of each snake. By explaining its different features, the reader can discover how each snake is particularly suited for its habitat, lifestyle and method of hunting. ... Read more

This monograph addresses questions concerning the evolutionary history of advanced snakes using molecular phylogenetic data. Viperids are the sister group of the other clades examined. Atractaspis may share a lineage with elapids. The study concludes that, because of sampling problems, many generalizations concerning snake evolution derived from the fossil record, particularly those about the age of lineages, are probably in error. ... Product Description
An updated edition of the best-selling reference book on snakes, in a popular Q&A format.

This new edition of Snakes in Question has been completely updated to take into account the most recent research available, offering useful scientific information about snakes while dispelling many widely-circulated myths and common fears.

Accompanied by 100 stunning color photographs and written in the popular question-and-answer format of Smithsonian's In Question series, the book tells how snakes breathe, hear, smell, and much more. It covers not only the life cycle of snakes but explores such phenomena as the rattlesnake's rattle, the viper's hiss, and the snake charmer's secrets. It addresses common folktales about snakes (do snakes milk cows?) and describes giant snakes, both real and imaginary. The authors also give expert advice on such subjects as distinguishing venomous species from harmless look-alikes and keeping snakes as pets. 100 color photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding with question answer format
I have always been fascinated by snakes, all my life I have learned all I could about snakes and I own several snake books, but this one tops them all! Just about anything you want to know about a snake will be answered in this great book. I really enjoy reading it. I am planning to become a snake expert soon and this book has really taught me a lot. It is a must have for anyone studying biology, zoology, or planning to become a herpatologist! The first section gives all the facts, it tells about how snakes evolved from lizards, how they hear see & smell, and how the snake body works. The second section, tells about the myths and tells the real truth. The third section tells about giant and the most dangerous snakes. The fourth is about snake bites, and the last section tells about snakes and humans. This book is incredible, and a must have for beginning snake enthusiast!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book was absolutely fascinating.
I picked it up because I read the Smithsonian book about cats which I thought was absolutely outstanding, even though I knew a lot about cats. Thought this one about snakes, snakes which I find quite intimidating and scary, might also be fascinating. Not only did I find it exceptional but snakes no longer scare me. I am now intrigued by them (all from a book.. I didn't even need to see them in a zoo or in someone's home as a pet), their design, lifestyles, skills and abilities.

It only had one small section at towards the back about caring for snakes as pets. They gave some basic information (in about 3-4 pages), but clearly indicated that they don't condone the practice of snakes as house pets instead of favoring human's choice to maintain nature in a natural state to allow snakes to live as they always have.

This book addressed questions about their design, abilities, lifestyle and the interaction of these animals with others animals, some of the differences with other species, geographic localities, physiology (the limited information that is now available on them), venom and its characteristics, uses and services to them and also as medical and more.

I am signed up to get the answer book about Bats now, as the two I have already read (Cats and Snakes) just blew my mind in a great way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snakes in Question
What a great book!Even though I'm a lifelong herper, this book still had information that I did not know.Easy to read and understand. If you like snakes, this is a must for your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fas-s-s-cinating!
This eminently readable and entertaining book on snakes is the best one available for curious adults and precocious older children. The question and answer format and the copious illustrations make this a book for dipping into at short intervals, but beware-- you may not be able to put it down! The authors are experts with a gift of explaining their topic with ample and well-chosen details that enliven the text. And as readable as it is, the authors do include, for those who are interested, references to some of the specialized language: did you know, for example, that the word for warning coloration is "aposematism"? I do not consider my self a snake-fancier but I was delighted by all the wonderful and surprising things I learned. Perhaps the greatest surprise: how many invertebrates prey on snakes.

For the precocious child and preteen this book really conveys the important point that science is a process of continual inquiry, not inert facts and unchallengeable answers. The authors raise some questions of their own to underline their point, and I know that I still had many unanswered at the end. (If snakes have a larynx and some even have vocal cords, why haven't these long disappeared since they are apparently never used?)

The authors also appeal to younger readers with sound suggestions on careers in herpetology and advice on keeping a snake as a pet which, in short, is: DON'T, but if you must, here are some acceptable ways to go about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those starting out, but nothing new to the pro's

Still, it is a great book, especially for those who are inexperienced with the common diseases, mites, etc... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
This book was sick & I mean that in the most flattering way possible. Terrific art & an awesome read. I'm hooked on Hino Horror!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sick and gross - you have been warned!
Ever heard about the infamous Japanese pseudo-snuff films of the GUINEA PIG series (now available on DVD even from mainstream retailers like amazon)? The first two entries in the series (DEVIL`S EXPERIMENT and FLOWERS OF FLESH AND BLOOD)were directed by manga artist Hideshi HINO. Having seen the GUINEA PIG series (although I did not like it and would not recommend it to anyone) I picked up some of HINO`s manga work.
As was to be expected THE RED SNAKE turned out to be an exercise in gross out how-much-can-you-take-before-you-vomit horror. Don't let the innocent cover fool you!
The plot (so to speak) evolves about a weird family living reclusively in an odd desolated mansion. Now weird is actually an understatement: Grandmother thinks she is a hen and likes to sit atop a nest made of twigs in the middle of the room (!). Granddad has a weird lump in his face and his daughter has the unthankful daily task of squeezing the pus out of it (which is presented with rather obvious sexual overtones). Dad breeds chicken (when he is not busy slaughtering them). Needless to say that the children are dysfunctional, too: Our narrator, a small boy with a bizarrely disformed head, watches his sister playing with bugs. As if all of this mess was not enough, there is an evil presence in the mansion, sealed behind a mirror. Well, it is not a spoiler to mention that this evil force (in form of the red snake of the title) breaks loose and sets in motion a descent into madness, mayhem and disfigurement...

Well, I am not averse to bizarre and sick entertainment - quite on the contrary (check out my other reviews). However, THE RED SNAKE has little of merit beyond the savage imagery. It is all very degenerate and sick (and not in an entertaining way) with images of bizarre bodily transformations, pus, gore, bugs and gratitous scenes of cruelty against animals galore, relentlessly thrown at the reader. Truth be told I found even GUINEA PIG easier to stomach and a less sickening entertainment.
Admittedly it is competently drawn. The publisher has retained the original Japanese right-to-left reading format and made the rather odd choice of leaving the original Japanese sound effects untranslated. (I really wonder why they bothered even translating the dialogue, as there is not exactly much talk in this manga.)

4-0 out of 5 stars The Mirror Cracked
Volume one of the Hino Horror series involves a strange tale of a bizarre family and a strange house.

The story opens with a frightened little boy telling us of the house he hates. It is huge and surrounded by a dark forest. He has never been able to leave the house, always running bach scared to a new section he did not know. One hallway is blocked by a large mirror. It is said by the boy's grandfather that the mirror prevents the demons on the other side from getting through. But even stranger than the house is the boy's family.Among them is a grandmother who thinks she is a chicken and lives in a big nest. The boy seems to be the only normal one in the house.

One day the boy sees a crack in the mirror. He is terrified that the demons can now come through. The first evidence is a large red snake loose in the house. From there things escalate at a frightening pace as the boy becomes witness to terrible horrors involving his family. In the end we return to a narrative similar to the opening.

This is a strange one.We never get any real idea of who these people are or what the house is.It sort of reminds me of The Sentinel but there is nothing to indicate that the family is watching or guarding anything. But despite all of that this still remains a very creepy story full of dark imagery and atmosphere.A pretty good choice to lead of this new series of Hino's work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Weird, quirky, scary
Beware the red snake! Told from the perspective of a young boy, The Red Snake (Hino Horror 1) is a story of the above boy, the house he inhabits, and the forest around his house that stretches on and on. The characters in the story are all mad: his grandfather, who sports a massive growth on his jaw; his grandmother, who believes she is a chicken; his father, who is vicious to the chickens he raises (except for his mother, to whom he provides eggs that so that she can claim she laid them herself); and his sister, whose affection for insects borders on the erotic. The story evolves into a classic nightmare.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
I read a couple of Hino's mangas at the bookstore, and I must say I was thoroughly disappointed.I am a huge fan of Junji Ito (and Japanese horror in general), and while I'm aware that artists like Ito and Umezu Kazuo don't write the deepest stories, they at least craft interesting stories. And often times their stories make you think. From what I read, Hino's stories were just typical ghost and monster stories that weren't particularly interesting or thought-provoking.Instead of scaring me, most of the stories just grossed me out. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Classical Book on Venomous Herpetoculture
Ludwig Trutnau's "Venomous Snakes: Snakes in the Terrarium" has been considered the classical work on venomous snake husbandry in German-speaking countries for years, and is now finally available in English. Translated by Donald Stremme, the original format and plates were all maintained in the English version, with the exception of some of the legality aspects. In fact, several taxonomic updates were undertaken in the English version that had since become outdated in the German version.

The book is written specifically for herpetoculturists, and therefore focuses on captive husbandry techniques and propagation data for each of the species. The species accounts also include relevant information on the behavior and demeanor of the given taxa. In these aspects, the book offers more valuable information than probably any other work of herpetological literature available.

The book does not offer any taxonomic keys and contains generally little taxonomic information. Basic descriptions are provided in the beginning of each species account, including appearance anddistribution, but is kept rather basic in accordance with its goal and intented target audience. There is hardly any information on the biology of the discussed taxa.

Bottom line: This book is an absolute must for herpetoculturists, zoo keepers and herpetologists who maintain live specimens in their labs, as it contains more useful husbandry and captive propagation info than any other available book. On the other hand, herpetology students and anyone with a more academic interest in the subject is not likely to benefit very much from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full and complete descriptions of 171 difference species
Venomous Snakes: Snakes In The Terrarium by Ludwig Trutnau is finally available for an American readership having been competently translated into English by veterinarian Donald W. Stremme. Providing full and complete descriptions of 171 difference species, Venomous Snakes is beautifully enhanced with 126 color photographs. The highly accessible text describes the behavior and care in captivity of venomous snakes from the Elapidae family (cobras, kraits, coral snakes); Viperidae family (adders, vipers); and Crotalidae family (pitvipers). Subspecies and color variations are expertly detailed as well. Informed and informative, Venomous Snakes is a critically important and basic addition to the professional reference library and supplemental reading lists of zookeepers, herptoculturists, veterinary clinics, and academic library collections.
