Product Description
The study of poverty and inequality has been thrust into the foreground as scholars and policymakers respond to the spectacular increase in economic inequality and the slowing or reversal of long-standing downward trends in other forms of inequality. The Grusky Social Stratification reader, which has been the mainstay of the field for more than a decade, has now been revised to reflect ongoing changes in the structure of inequality and the tools that scholars have used to understand these changes.

In this heavily updated third edition, the history of the field unfolds in systematic fashion, with introductory articles in each section providing examples of the classical work that laid the conceptual or methodological foundation and the remaining chapters introducing students to the cutting-edge work that builds on that foundation and moves it forward. The resulting collection is comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and methodologically diverse. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Course text - great source
This is a great book that sums up the debates within this branch of the discipline of sociology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for understanding social stratification
Grusky has put together an excellent introduction to the study of social stratification. Coming in at slightly over 1,000 pages, this book has a little something on everything. To Grusky's credit, he also includes some contemporary theories that have only been lightly tested and may not ultimately prove to have much applicable value in the interests of providing a thorough analysis of the questions and issues surrounding stratification. Well worth the time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Students Opinion
Last year I completed a course titled "Social Stratification" at Whitman College. After completing the class I decided to keep this book for my own personal collection, and I often refer back to the articles for pleasure reading (I'm a nerd, this probably isn't normal for this text). For our class, this giant reader was our bible, providing us with a wealth of articles that ranged from philosophical to research based to purely academic to personal accounts. The book is well balanced, looking at a multitude of issues from every level of study. After finishing this course, and completing this book, I am now considering pursuing a masters or doctorate in sociology with a focus on class studies. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite Soc Textbook
I had to purchase this book for class and it's become one of my favorite textbooks thus far. Kerbo is clearly biased, however he does present different and conflicting theories, and criticisms of said theories, to every issue explored in the book - and there's a LOT packed in. I think he did a very good job of attempting to tackle so much and focus on areas with the most study done on them. He also makes it clear that more research needs to be done as we are far from finding all the answers.

As for readability, there are a few chapters that are extremely dry - lots of numeral figures to illustrate his points. However, the entire book is extremely eye-opening and there are many useful graphs and charts to help present the data.

Kerbo provides brilliant insight into economic and global stratification, along with detailed discussions of classic and modern theories. This is one of the best books on the topic and I have found it quite useful in a variety of academic situations. Some people that are critical of Kerbo's short sections on race and class should be reminded of the interconnectedness of social and economic problems.Inequality between both sex and race cannot be seperated from the consequences of capitalism.

Product Description
One of the first accounts of social variation in language, this groundbreaking study founded the discipline of sociolinguistics, providing the model on which thousands of studies have been based. In this second edition, Labov looks back on forty years of sociolinguistic research, bringing the reader up to date on its methods, findings and achievements. In over thirty pages of new material, he explores the unforeseen implications of his earlier work, addresses the political issues involved, and evaluates the success of newer approaches to sociolinguistic investigation. In doing so, he reveals the outstanding accomplishments of sociolinguistics since his original study, which laid the foundations for studying language variation, introduced the crucial concept of the linguistic variable, and showed how variation across age groups is an indicator of language change. Bringing Labov's pioneering study into the 21st century, this classic volume will remain the benchmark in the field for years to come. ... Read more

This text examines the structure of stratification in the United States, focusing on the way one's class location influences his or her life opportunities.

Beeghley uses three themes to illustrate social stratification: How power influences the distribution of resources in the United States; how social structure influences rates of events; and how social psychological factors influence how individuals act on, and react to, the situations in which they find themselves.

I always ask my Professors if I can used a later edition textbook first before purchasing my textbooks, because it will save you a bundle of money. As an example: The 5th edition of Structure of Social Stratification has a used purchase price of 76.00, while the 4th edition of Structure of Social Stratification has a used purchase price of 0.41.Generally, if both editions are close together rarely is there much difference in the content of the books. ****The cardinal rule is to always ask your Professors first before purchasing an older edition of a textbook because it shows common sense and courtesy towards the Professor. This is a very interesting book to read and it explains the inequality of the classes in regards to advantages in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbiased prospective at its best...
This book fairly cut and dry, which is exactly what I like in sociology textbooks. Beeghley takes an unbiased view on social stratification and inequalities in contemporary society. He uses cross national and longitudinal data to effectively emphasize his points, which are valid and thought provoking. The book is well written and worth enough to keep on my bookshelf. Product Description
A much-anticipated update of the classic book-and-poster set depicting who owns what, who makes how much, who works where, and who lives with whom.

Generations of teachers, union organizers, and activists have relied on this book-and-poster set, originally published in 1979, to illustrate the magnitude of America's economic divide—which has only grown ever since. This completely updated edition, drawn from the 2005 Current Population Survey of the U.S. Census, brings together fresh primary data to provide a clear—and "eye-opening" (Chicago Tribune)—picture of the U.S. social structure.

Folded inside the companion booklet, the poster depicts color-coded figures that make it possible to compare social groups at a glance and to understand how income distribution relates to race, sex, education, and occupation. With charts and careful explanations, the booklet shows how to make the most of the poster in the classroom and beyond, and reveals the considerable changes in America's social landscape over the last few decades.

Rose's latest findings reveal that recent economic growth has mostly benefited the wealthiest households, that the term "middle class" has lost most of its meaning, that a gender gap persists in the workplace, and that, on average, African Americans and Latinos still earn far less than other Americans. Bringing to life the dry statistics underpinning our discussions of inequality, Social Stratification in the United States is, in the words of Barbara Ehrenreich, "a unique achievement." ... A fascinating, objective analysis of the distribution of wealth in America that should be made into a PBS documentary. All classroom should put the poster on the wall and use it as a learning tool. Al Gore should present it to Congress!

The Social Stratification in the U.S, indicates the disappearance of the middleclass and a growing inequality in America. The number of poor are increasing, and the gap between the rich is increasing exponentially. 40% of the U.S. population have zero net worth! That means they have no assets. Without social security these people would be living on the street.

On the flip side, the 400 richest individuals in the country are controlling more than 38% of the wealth. 10% of the population controls 70% of the wealth. The current U.S. population is roughly 305 million people.

Many conclusions and observations may be made with this unique learning tool. A historical trend of the distribution of wealth in the past fifty years might indicate that the U.S. is becoming a third world country, with the bulk of the population living in poverty. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume offers an insightful understanding and analysis of issues related to social stratification, mobility, village community, urban life, tribal and peasant movements, gender relations, etc. in India in a broad theoretical and empirical perspective. Most of the articles are on structure, culture, process and dialectics in post-independent India. Contours and dynamics of Indian society in relation to caste, class and power hierarchies have been discussed with a view to ascertain relative role played by the structural and cultural factors. The contributors have ably demonstrated the nexus between theoretical formulations and empirical realities. The differential bearing of theory on facts and vice versa would encourage and inspire students, researchers and teachers for new pastures in the domain of knowledge.Since this volume is a festschrift in honour of eminent sociologist, Prof. K.L. Sharma, all articles related to his interest have been incorporated in it. Several eminent scholars, his colleagues and students have contributed to the volume. The editors have taken sincere pains to make the volume a composite one for the benefit of all the interested and concerned scholars. ... Read more

Product Description
Bringing together the classic statements on social stratification, this collection offers the most significant contributions to ongoing debates on the nature of race, class, and gender inequality. Selections by Marx and Weber provide the foundation for further theoretical debates throughout the book on the nature of class, status, and non-class forms of inequality. American stratification theory begins with Warner and the Davis and Moore/Tumin debate on the functionalist theory of stratification. Further selections by Giddens, Parkin, and Wright update the Marx/Weber debate on the nature of social class today. Readings by Engels, Mitchell, and Lockwood further an understanding of gender inequality, while offerings by Du Bois, Myrdal, and Cox provide competing theoretical foundations for understanding the complexity of racial inequality. Finally, an essay by Patricia Hill Collins discusses the basis for conceptualizing the intersection of race, class, and gender. Levine's concluding chapter reflects on the continued importance of the classical foundations of class analysis and offers an excellent overview of recent directions in theory and research on the intersection of race, class, and gender inequality. ... Product Description
This text explores how social inequality in the United States can be explained, how it affects us, and what can be done about it. The book is based on the assumptions that social inequality is multidimensional and that in order to deal with inequality and its consequences we need to understand the theories behind it. Taking a historical and social structural approach, the author simply but compellingly gives a sense of the pervasiveness of social inequality and how it affects us all. For the fifth edition: *An examination of the pros and cons of globalization has been added to the chapter on globalization. *A powerful, in-depth discussion of socioeconomic status of homosexuals and legal discrimination demonstrates how sex, sexual orientation, and gender lead to discrimination in the legal system. *Added coverage of environmental racism reminds students that economic "resources" are not limited to income, but also to land. *The addition of discussion on Herbert Spencer's theories of social inequality complements the discussions of the poor and welfare reform. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 2003 Inequality in the USA is an outrage
I think most U.S. citizens don't realize just how extensive inequality is in the world and in the U.S. Hurst does an amazing job of explaining this differential. In chapter eight he quotes the United Nations Human Development Report on worldwide inequality: "In 1997 it was estimated that the total wealth of the richest 225 people in the world was over$1 trillion, which equaled the combined income of the poorest 47 percent [of the world] (2.5 billion people)" (page 161).

He provides stunning at-home statistics as well. All well documented. All seemingly credible (U.S. Bureau of the Census).

He breaks social inequality along many dimensions, explains the general explanations for such inequality, shows the consequences of it, and explains how some have dealt with these perceived injustices in the past.

I think Charles Hurst's text stands as the backbone of any program that would truly work to change the status quo of theinjustices of tremendous inequalities of all kinds.

Outrage was my reaction to the extensive detail this text brings to life.Be warned, if you open this book you won't like the picture of our world that it paints. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful instructional material for hands-on learning
This poster graphically represents the distribution of income in the U.S. by occupational category, race/ethnicity, and (gendered) household structure. The general shape of the income distribution and the locationof the color-coded symbols across this distribution give readers a visual, intuitive understanding of the extent of income inequality in the U.S.Abrief yet informative booklet accompanies the poster, with 23 pages ofunderstandable text and additional charts and tables that highlight some ofthe more detailed complexities of income and wealth inequality.

Thisposter/booklet set is helpful for orienting students in general to readingand interpreting graphs, tables, and simple descriptive statistics appliedto a specific topic. It is especially ideal for use as the center ofsmall-group activities and group learning exercises to engage students inthe area of social inequality, whether in an Intro Sociology or SocialStratification class.

In terms of weaknesses/shortcomings, the poster andits symbols seem confusing and sometimes overwhelming to students at first;however, with 15-minutes of explanation and orientation, they quicklybecome interested in the depth of information embedded within the poster. I would have appreciated more specific, concrete suggestions for groupactivities and application in the classroom. Also, the poster/booklet arebased on 1990 data that need to be updated soon, although the general shapeof the distribution should not have changed much. ... Product Description

In Aztec and colonial Central Mexico, every individual was destined for lifelong placement in a legally defined social stratum or estate. Social mobility became possible after independence from Spain in 1821 and increased after the 1910-1920 Revolution. By 2000, the landed aristocracy that was for long Mexico's ruling class had been replaced by a plutocracy whose wealth derives from manufacturing, commerce, and finance--but rapid growth of the urban lower classes reveals the failure of the Mexican Revolution and subsequent agrarian reform to produce a middle-class majority. These evolutionary changes in Mexico's class system form the subject of Social Stratification in Central Mexico, 1500-2000, the first long-term, comprehensive overview of social stratification from the eve of the Spanish Conquest to the end of the twentieth century.

The book is divided into two parts. Part One concerns the period from the Spanish Conquest of 1521 to the Revolution of 1910. The authors depict the main features of the estate system that existed both before and after the Spanish Conquest, the nature of stratification on the haciendas that dominated the countryside for roughly four centuries, and the importance of race and ethnicity in both the estate system and the class structures that accompanied and followed it. Part Two portrays the class structure of the post-revolutionary period (1920 onward), emphasizing the demise of the landed aristocracy, the formation of new upper and middle classes, the explosive growth of the urban lower classes, and the final phase of the Indian-mestizo transition in the countryside.

This Third Edition of Scott Sernau's highly acclaimed text provides a sociological framework for analyzing inequality within U.S. inequalities of race, class and gender can only be understood in the context of the changing global economy, and this is the first text to make that connection its focus, bringing domestic inequalities and the global context home to students with vivid examples and analysis. Using lively writing and examples straight from today's headlines, the author places each issue and dimension of inequality in the context of a changing global economy. He also introduces both classical and contemporary theories of stratification to help interpret these real-world illustrations. This edition features two new chapters: The Gordian Knot of Race, Class, and Gender (3) and Challenging the System: Social Movements (12), as well as a new focus on how the current regime of market-driven solutions actually contributes to, rather than reduces, social inequality.
