Eurocentric Neo-Orientalism posing as deep understanding
Only a Summary of Existing Literature
One of the best available books on "Hinduism" King's account draws quite explicitly on the work of Michel Foucault and Edward Said, but King deals creatively with both Foucault and Said in generating his own unique approach to the study of the "West's" colonial encounter with India.King is not content with an account that denies the agency of native Indians. He thus focuses on how "native informants," often in reaction against colonial forces, ironically helped perpetuate, and indeed bring into being, the "Hinduism" created by Orientalist scholars. This book should interest all students of religion, as it is part of a growing recognition that the use of the term "religion" when discussing non-western or ancient cultures is highly problematic.Indeed, a possible difficulty for King is his insistence that there were indigenous "religions" in India before the colonial encounter (as on p. 103). Orientalism and Religion should greatly impact specialists in Hinduism, but it is also accessible for the general reader willing to put forth a little extra effort.

Editorial Review Product Description Part I of the book examines the political and scholarly stakes involved in defining religions-Buddhism, African traditional religion, and fundamentalist Judaism-as subjective and apolitical belief systems. Part II takes up the relationship between religious reform and nationalism, asking how the formalization of religious practices helped define nationalist ideologies in the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire, Japan, and India. Part III turns to religious exhibits in Turkey and the southern United States, exploring how pilgrims and tourists convert museum displays into objects of religious veneration. By treating religion as a contested social space, this book brings philosophy, theology, history, and political science together to show how struggles over the definition of the religious are bound up with colonial and national politics around the world. Editorial Review Product Description Religion has played a crucial role in American immigration history as an institutional resource for migrants' social adaptation, as a map of meaning for interpreting immigration experiences, and as a continuous force for expanding the national ideal of pluralism. To explain these processes the editors of this volume brought together the perspectives of leading scholars of migration and religion. The resulting essays present salient patterns in American immigrants' religious lives, past and present. In comparing the religious experiences of Mexicans and Italians, Japanese and Koreans, Eastern European Jews and Arab Muslims, and African Americans and Haitians, the book clarifies how such processes as incorporation into existing religions, introduction of new faiths, conversion, and diversification have contributed to America's extraordinary religious diversity and add a comprehensive religious dimension to our understanding of America as a nation of immigrants. |
