Considered the bible of SE by many.
This book is especially useful to me because of the chapters of software testing which are usually overlooked or hardly mentioned in other books.

Overpriced but Comprehesive
I have found this book overpriced and wanting in many ways. I used it for self study and at least it is comprehensive. Other reviews point out the weakness in this approach and I agree to a point-- but, well did I mention it is comprehensive. It is far easier to research a given issue in more detail once you are aware of it, than to discover what you do not know via divine inspiration. Given that I am not taking a class, but doing self study, I personaly found it very useful in that respect.

Likewise, as an instructor, which I am not, I would find it usefulas a baseline offering to be supplemented with other materials.


The price, on the other hand is not acceptable. McGraw-Hill tiles have increased in cost almost 4 x over the last 10 years or so,and the material is not improved.

The Good And The Bad
This book is great for learning about different types of tests and models in the software engineering world.I do find the book too wordy in some parts though.Some of the sentences said are not necessary because they are common sense.Overall though, if you are not looking for a book dedicated to programming and looking for a book about practices in the computer industry then I would recommend this book.

Alright I guess
First and foremost, I have not read all chapters in this book. But from what I have read, from parts 1,2,4, and 5, I agree that the text covers too much and often says that much of the methods are subjected to the particular circumstances of an individual's projects. That is, while there are many ways to do a task, you and your team or company has to settle which one you're going to use. And this is understandable, while unpleasant.
The pleasant thing would be if there were a concrete solid step-by step instruction on how to do everything. But this is impossible, because various projects may pursue various paths in developing software projects. For instance, while one project has to be done quickly and information gathering is not as wanted, other project may require more time, being laid back, and have all little requirements and details laid out at the beginning.
I understand that author wanted to cover all aspects, all approaches, and various details, and that led to a text that is not the easiest and not the most pleasant to read. But, understanding the complexity of a task at hand, and the variety of methods and opinions surrounding the software engineering, I think this text was informative.
The little quotes inserted here and then, gave this text personal touch and made it less dry. I liked those. ;) ... Read more

Java programming
An excellent book - very informative but should be seen as a book to build on the foundation of the Java tutorial - edition 3 or something similar as the content assumes a good foundation of java basics.

Outdated now, good if you're two years behind on JDK, though.
Looks like a good tutorial book - however, it's now several generations out of date, which is a problem. Sun keeps updated copies of the books on line, but the limits of printing mean that the bound volumes don't get updated.This covers Java JDK 1.2 - NOT JAVA JDK 5 (the current release).Since there are significant changes between the revisions, this is of limited utility these days.

Excellent book - detailed, comprehensive and yet easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this book for learning and implementing Java.

Potentially a good book, in the right hands
The activities in this book are varied and serve to reinforce and improve basic French skills, I would not recommend this book unless you had some prior knowledge of French, any will do really. It also has grammar sections in each chapter and has nice vocabulary and culture sections. However, there are areas that aren't fully explained and if your teacher/professor is a French native then they should quickly be able to point out the books cultural mistakes and explain the little details (but very important) that the book leaves out. A willing student and a good teacher can really make this book work.

A balanced book for beginners
I was very favorably impressed with the organization and variety of this book, as well as the fact that it accommodates the different styles of learning among students.French is my sixth language (counting English).

This text follows several parallel learning approaches.In each chapter, there is a section emphasizing conversation, there are notes directing the student to "discover" grammatical themes and irregularities, the usual snippets of history and culture, comments on usage, a brief vocabulary, an English discussion of the language lesson (like a plain-language discussion of what's going on from one English speaker to another).Each chapter closes with a condensed technical grammar for later reference and review.

Besides the diversity of learning approaches it supports, I especially like the fact that this book includes reading that is an uncomfortable stretch.These excerpts require deduction of the message from context.I'm sure students will complain loudly about the "unfairness" of having to guess the meaning of words that aren't formally defined anywhere, but face it -- intelligent guessing is the skill most required by someone who tries to use a language in real life.Why shouldn't it be taught?

As I say, I'm a bit of a language nut, and have several shelves of texts in various languages (Russian, German, Latin, Attic Greek).This is one of very few that actually teaches the skills needed for ordinary conversation, listening to the radio, and reading Le Monde.

As French books go...this one is the worst
It was unorganized and muddled.I had a hard time learning anything.My school no longer uses it for that reason.I don't recommend you buy this unless you know French and are just trying to expand your basic skills in no order.I was so confused.

Finally!Language that is taught without puppets.
I have taken many language classes, and they usually go something like this:teacher pulls out a puppet, the puppet says a few words, the students repeat them, and then at home we fill in a wroksheet for 10 minutes adn go back to whatever else we were doing, no more knowledgeable then before.This book is very refreshing- it is challenging but expalins the grammar step by step and directly so the students don't miss anything and can really understand.Also, the grammar pages make it easy to pre-read and review.The culture lessons make learning more exciting and make us use the French- which was my point for taking the class.To be able to use it in real situations!With this book I can learn French at a college level, the same way I learn math or econ or anything else.French doesn't have to be slow, easy and filled with puppet shows that leave you confused.I learned so much using Paroles (more than I did with HS Spanish) and I'm really glad that my university uses it.Merci!

The worst textbook EVER
My students, who are University level individuals, consistently HATE this book and its ancilliary materials.The textbook is adequate IF the professor is competent and able to supplement the series with other material and practice.The text "Accent" is superior for French, and this work could benefit by emulating the superb Con Mucho Gusto format for Spanish.My students consistently find the "Paroles" text and materials to be awkward, tedious, frustrating, and even (in places) patronizing in the "new paradigm" approach which was the pedagogical fad of the 1990's.(Read some of Steven Pinker's brilliant works, especially his views on language acquistion). A more "traditional" text series such as "Accent" was more conducive to effective language learning.My students who use more "traditional" methods of learning French experience better understanding, retention and communication skills...and, as a skillful teacher, I find that I must heavily supplement the "Paroles" materials if I am to do justice to my students.Fourteen years' experience in the French language classroom and six years with this textbook series justify my critique, based upon personal experience and student reviews. ... Very Basic
This book gives you a very basic introduction to ANSYS workbench. I would prefer going to ANSYS portal to find better examples and tutorials.

TO ALL TUTORIALS AUTHORS TAKE NOTE, THIS IS HOW TO DO IT!!!
I buy alot of books but never have the time to do reviews such as this. However I made an exemption with this one.

This tutorial is fantastic, easy to follow and highly recommended. I would have given this book and DVD tutorial 10 stars if allowed. To all you Tutorial authors for computer programming, CAD, FEA etc WAKE UP! this package is how to do it!

Some key requirements for a top tutorial package such as this:

First, publish your tutorial book with a DVD. The book and DVD work very well together and makes your package stand out from the competition. It's better than having one of my lecturers in front me.
Second, make the DVD and book easy to follow for beginners, not just you the author.
Third, don't miss any steps.
Fourth, make the tutorial comprehesive enough to be worth the price, eg 250+ pages.

To Fereydoon Dadkhah and Jack Zacher, thank you so much for efforts. Ever thought of doing a similiar book and DVD package for C programming, Solidworks and other aspects of ANSYS?

This book may pay for itself.
As a practicing engineer, I had a chance to take an ANSYS class that used this text. As the synopsis states the text includes a CD-ROM that provides the working files mentioned in the text. The two worked flawlessly together. I have had other classes where the supporting files were no better than the written examples or were not very clear in their purpose. Not so with this text.

It works likes this: You follow the instruction in the textand what it says will happen... happens. No surprises. This is a step by step manual. It doesn't leave you behind. There are video lessons on the CD that show you exactly what to click and just what will happen. The screen shots are just what you will see as you follow each practice problem. Did I mention no surprises. This is one of the rare texts written with the student in mind. It doesn't talk down to you or over your head. All terms are the same ones that you will see in the software.

ANSYS software can make it possible to DFEMA an idea or to help with DOE for a change to an existing part. ANSYS makes its bones by taking a complex task and making it simple and efficient. This text takes the task of learning to use the ANSYS software and likewise efficiently teaches the novice how to make use of this invaluable tool.

Your next raise will pay for this book many times over. You need to learn ANSYS and you need to buy this book. Do it!
