It further brought about hitherto unprecedented levels of exploitation of the region's resources and people in a region that had previously relied on subsistence, agricultural- pastoral economies. The study considers four aspects of the period: merchant capitalism, agrarian capitalism, mining-industrial capitalism and the imperial factor. Newspaper History of South Africa
Original copies of the newspaper articles along with text commentary. The old adverts of the day are also quite interesting to read. The book covers key South African events from 1852 through to 1976 and includes the world's first heart transplant, major bomb and plane crashes, the Sharpeville massacre, SA's border war, the royal visit, women's vote, the Rivonia Trial with Nelson Mandela, Prime Minister Verwoerd's assassination in Parliament, South Africa's independance from Britain, as well as some key political events of the day.

The book is a glimpse into the past and makes one realise how much attitudes have really changed over the past few decades in South Africa. An enjoyable read for those that want to see South African history as it unfolded at the time. Bear in mind though that the news of the day was published with the relevant prejudices that prevailed at the time, whether that was British or Afrikaner. ... Read more
