In this ethnography of the everyday life of contemporary Korea, Denise Lett argues that South Korea's contemporary urban middle class not only exhibits upper-class characteristics but also that this reflects a culturally inherited disposition of Koreans to seek high status. Lett shows that Koreans have adapted traditional ways of asserting high status to modern life, and analyzes strategies for claiming high status in terms of occupation, family, lifestyle, education, and marriage.

Lett's study is solid though not impactful.It was an interesting read and the first work in English that looks at the rise of the urban middle class in Korea.I recommend it for those interested in modern Korea and the influence of economic development on cuture in Korea.

Both sides of the debate...
I try to read as much as possible about Korea, both North and South.I found this book while working on a research paper and I ended up buying it.
It covers many issues dealing with North/South Korea, but it doesn't only give you a one-sided story.The editors found some of the leading writers/scholars on the topics presented and had compiled opposing view points so that the reader can decide for him/herself.
