My son loves this book
This book is great for Christian families who want to teach scientific concepts to their children in a manner that is consistent with their faith.My son is 4 so some of the scripture passages and scientific theories are a bit lost on him, but the illustrations are enjoyable to him and he is able to "pick " the experiments he wants to do.Most of the experiments involve readily available items and we didn't need to "shop" before starting.A very minor criticism would be the lack of information about age-appropriateness on the cover.We will enjoy this book even more as my son gets older. ... Pretty basic stuff
If you're a beginning wood-worker or don't have a lot of time, than this book would be wonderful. If you have a lot of skill and experience, however, I think you'd find the ideas too basic. There are a few more complicated projects, but I think if you are able to do them, you'd probably be able to figure out the rest of the projects on your own without the book. ... Read more

2004 Edition Is Even Better!
The International Space Station (ISS) had been operational for a while when this second edition came out in 2004, so there are a lot of great interior and exterior photos.I'm an adult "space fan" with an interest in educational outreach, so I'm always looking for good space-themed books for kids, and this is one of the best I've ever seen.And it's not just for kids - I learned a lot myself!The hands-on activities look great too (haven't tried any yet).

Construction is finally continuing on the ISS now.The shuttle Atlantis is still in space as I write this, having just delivered and installed a major new ISS section, and private space explorer Ms Anousheh Ansari is in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft ready to dock with and board the ISS tomorrow.It's going to be a busy place in the coming months, so if you or your kids are at all curious about the ISS or space flight in general, get this well written book and become a Space Station expert practically overnight!

Excellent overview of space science.
Dyson's treatment of the phenomena in microgravity is particularly good.She provides a variety of entertaining experiments to demonstratetechnology used in space.Though this book is clear enough for olderchildren, it certainly would furnish an interested adult with plenty of newinformation in a readable, interesting style.This is a good gift book forthat curious kid on your gift list -- but you should also get a copy foryour coffee table.

An excellent book about the science of free-fall and space, written for kids, but interesting for adults as well.It has tons of interesting "hands-on" demonstrations suitable for kids that illustrate howthe space station works.Would be great if you wanted ideas for a scienceproject, or just if you're interested in the science behind space missions. ... Space - Age Electronic Projects
Very well written and concise book. Book gives detailed information on building some really interesting electronic projects as the title implies. I do not recommend a novice building some of these circuits since most of the projects involve high voltage and both R.F. and acoustic radiation. If you already have experience building electronic circuits and are aware of the dangers of working with high voltages, then this is the book for you. This is fringe electronics that is somewhat outside what I would call mainstream electronic circuits.

My brother had been looking for this book for some time when I found it on Amazon.I bought it quickly and he was delighted to recieve it for his birthday.The book was in the condition promised and arrived quickly.

Some really cool projects you won't find anywhere else.I liked the ultra sonic mouse trap.

Serious Electronics
This book teaches practical,
hands-on experience with some exciting
science projects that you aren't likely to
encounter elsewhere.

The ultrasonic listener extends the sense of
hearing to the realm of sounds above 20kHz.

The low-power one-transistor fm radio
transmitter is a useful tool to have in
your bag of tricks; it can be built on an
hour's notice, and for under $1.

It is an educational and worthwhile book.

That's the good news.

Now for a word of caution:

What I'm suggesting here is that you approach
the projects in this great book with wisdom and
an ability to think vigorously and persistently.

On one hand, If you mangage to complete and operate
all this book's projects, including adjustment of the
high-voltage supply of the cutting CO2 laser, and still
have not qualified for a postumous Darwin Award, then you
have demonstrated you are either a bizzarrely lucky fool
or a master technician who has the iron will to stay
alive by sticking to impeccable safety procedures.

And before you make your own homemade EMP generator,
consider that, at the time Mr. Ianinni wrote
this wonderous book, the electronic landscape
was much less involved, without the so many
co$tly thing$ like cell phone$ and PDA$ in it.
The radius of de$truction could lead irate
villagers (now reduced to a technological level of
torches and pitchforks) directly to your laboratory.

At least one of the devices i.e taser, have gotten
negative legislative attention since the book was
first published.

Ok; so now you know some of these projects
are genuinely hazardous.
Take care. Pay attention. Get old.
Keep one hand in your pocket.

The Book Makes It Possible
Alot of neat gadgets and plans in this book. The schematics are accompanied by a drawing with resistors etc. It is amazing this book came out in '83 since alot of these gadgets are unheard of. Probably because they do have a degree of safety that should be applied to their use. The writer sells the actual products in kits or pre built. He backs them up with proven theory and experience. I probably wont build many or one of the gadgets but the book is excellent reference and one of a kind, until his next one comes out. Which will be worth a read as well. ... Read more

Great compilation of projects for the intermediate hobbyist
This 16 year-old book is a cut above most electronic hobby books that are published today. Many of the newer volumes appear to be rushed out the door and either are constructed for children or for very advanced hobbyists. This is an "intermediate" hobbyist book in that the author expects that you have some experience in tinkering with electronics, but does not necessarily expect that you have an engineering degree. Like the other reviewers, I found some errors in the instructions and parts lists in this book, so be very careful, especially since the first chapter of this book is dedicated to the danger of working with high voltages! This is not a book that merely involves some LED's and 555 timer devices. Instead, the author's projects include a high-voltage Van de Graaff generator, a tesla coil, and several projects involving lasers. Therefore, for safety's sake you should not just turn your high-schooler loose alone in the garage with your credit card number, the number to the closest wholesale electronics warehouse, and these projects. The final projects in the book are the tamest and safest. These involve a custom robot entitled "Scooterbot", designed long before the age of Lego Mindstorms. There are significant mechanical component assemblies involved in most of these projects, so the reader should be comfortable with mechanical as well as electrical tinkering, and most of all have a strong penchant for safety. However, if you are careful, I think you will find this book's projects both interesting and educational. Plus, it is a real bargain at its very low cost.

Great Gizmos!
I love do-dads, thingamagigs and gizmos, and this book is just chuck full of them! Even better, the writer doesn't assume you're an utter moron, or that you have an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering. Fun andchallanging, I highly recommend it.

flawed but still pretty cool
At first glance, this book seems to be a necessary addition to the average tinkerer's library. However, after purchasing the book I found little inconsistencies between the schematics and the text, typos, or somethingelse which led to confusion and apprehension--as the book starts out bywarning of the risk of death with most of the projects if the instructionsand safety precautions aren't followed exactly, and repeats the warningwith almost every project. Before buying this book I'd suggest becomingvery familiar with high-voltage circuits (to the point where you can designyour own), otherwise you won't get as much out of it as you should. Forexample, the first project I tried was the variable xenon strobe, because Ifound all the parts in a $3.50 kit online, and it's actually two projectsin one. The first thing I noticed before building it was that the partslist (the book lists all the components you'll need to build each project)didn't match the schematic--the 555 IC isn't listed. The text says it's theheart of the circuit. Not a big deal, but then the text refers to a thirddiode, which is neither in the parts list nor the schematic. If this is anecessary part you could blow other components and/or, as the book warnsyou several times, kill yourself. As an intermediate-level"gadgeteer," I can't figure out if the text is wrong or if theschematic is wrong, and if the schematic is wrong (the text sounds correct)what to do about it. This book isn't really to teach how things work, it'smore for an advanced gadgeteer to put his or her knowledge to use. There isa basic explanation of how each project works, but not to the point whereyou could go in not knowing anything and come away a rocket scientist.Overall I'd recommend this book only to an advanced gadgeteer, or someonewho's very serious about learning these types of applications ofhigh-voltage circuits. Once you do understand what's happening, though,this book shows you how to build the coolest things, either from scratch orby rewiring things you'd find at a junk shop, and for that, if you are atthat level, I recommend it highly.
