Product Description

... 4-0 out of 5 stars Muy buena
Muy buena, interesante y amena obra de Chaviano. Para el fin de semana. Logra trasladarte a Miami y Habana, y ello está muy bien logrado. Simpática, agradable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entretenido!
Muy interesante y Entretenido!!! Curiosa vision de las mujeres y lo que dan o lo que aguantan por tener un marido cerca.

5-0 out of 5 stars La disfruté mucho
Una historia conmovedora y muy bien escrita que nunca decae. Me lo recomendó alguien de mi clase y ahora nos anunciaron que vamos a estudiarla en el próximo semestre. Estoy esperando con ansiedad para ver qué nuevas cosas saldrán de su lectura y análisis en clases. Hay mucha (buena) tela de donde cortar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Un libro que atrapa

... Product Description
Middle and senior high school students who dread the idea of having to learn a second language are likely to change their minds when they open this book. Each of its 17 lessons teaches an important and interesting aspect of the Spanish culture even as it presents a lesson in Spanish vocabulary and grammar. All lessons have Spanish titles with English translations, followed by a brief passage written entirely in Spanish. Immediately following the short essay is a vocabulary list with English equivalents covering all key words in the essay. Brief exercises that follow cover grammar, more vocabulary, pronunciation, idioms, and cognates--words that are written alike in English and Spanish, but are pronounced differently.Written passages in English discuss various aspects of Spanish culture and history. Structured in a workbook format, with exercises to test comprehension of the subject matter, Painless Spanish is a language immersion course, but with this important difference: it immerses students gently and painlessly into the Spanish language. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars You'll need a dictionary to get through this book!
I made the mistake of taking this book with me on an airplane... without a Spanish-English dictionary! There were words in Lesson One that I couldn't translate. There's no glossery so you're on your own.

This book could have been made so much better by adding more definitions and explanations.

This is definitely not a beginner's book, and the typos make me wonder how much of the Spanish instruction might be incorrect.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Painful Experience
Unlike how this book is marketing as "painless," this book is just another in a series of Spanish books that requires more than just effort as it purports, it also requires a basic knowledge of Spanish to really begin to effectively use this book. The presentation is haphazard, one of the first passages in the book is in Spanish that requires a Spanish dictionary as the book doesn't include its own glossary. There are better and more user-friendly books out there.Don't bother with this book if you are a beginner. And look before you buy if you are an intermediate student of Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Painless spanish
Well... I guess the name says it all. painless? not...really. You do have to really want to learn. I bought this book, and have worked through the first 6 or 7 lessons, and am still going. the author teaches you about the culture, which is helpful, but he tends to teach you more about that than the language itself. It does help me learn spanish, but you should probably already have a basis of spanish. For a total beginner, this is not suggested. I am a high school student in spanish 2, and if I had not had the knowledge of what I already have in spanish, this book would have been useless to me, and I would not have understood a single word. I really only understand becuase of what I already know. If I hadn't payed full price for this, I wouldn't be using it. The book is okay, and good if you're a little more than a beginner. recommended? I guess.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Way, Jose.
If you are the kind of person who loves to study on your own, and you already have a firm basis in Spanish, an extensive vocabulary and a pretty fair grasp of grammar, you might enjoy taking this book to read on a long trip. But really, you'd do better to pick up a copy of a good novel (Memoirs of a Geisha, for example) in Spanish. The text will be far less boring, and not a bit more difficult to understand.

The first sentence, Lesson one, reads, "El núcleo familiar es por lo general muy extenso y lo forman, básicamente, los padres e hijos."

Got it? Good. Because that's about as instructive as this book gets. The vocabulary gives you: por lo general, básicament, and padres e hijos. You are on your own with the rest of the words, their conjugation, parts of speech, usage and meaning.

Each chapter begins with a paragraph or two written in second year Spanish. A small percentage of the less common words are then listed in the Vocabulario básico. A (terribly) brief exercise follows. Then we have multiple features written in English, concerning culture, history, and grammatical points with a few examples. These repeating features have the same titles, from one chapter to the next, written in Spanish, but don't worry about understanding the title; it is translated every single time.

If you are truly a person who fears that learning Spanish may be painful, this book will do little more than prove you right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Painless Spanish
Don't buy this book unless you just want a little history lesson. Dr. Vega and the publisher Barron's must have had some time on their hand and some left over data from some other book. This is not a good text book for any student. It is filled the same old words to use, and the historical parts are not that interesting. Be very careful when a lanugage book title has words like: "Painless" - "10 Minutes a Day" -"Dummies". I suggest that you always come here to Amazon and readreviews on language books. Don't waste your money on shortcuts.
Adiós doctor Vega. Por favor, trata otra vez. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great CD/book for both my child and myself to learn Spanish
These CD's/books are interesting/fun enough to keep my child's attention, but teach basic Spanish vocabulary.I'm also learning better with this product than with traditional language learning methods.

4-0 out of 5 stars We play this a lot
As a caveat my child is on the young side (2.5) and this disc comes with a book that has activities that she is too young to do yet. That said, she asks me to play these CDs EVERY day in the car. The voices are mostly authentic to the show, but I was little disappointed by the lack of music from the show.

There are four stories, and each has a scenario (e.g., the park) around which vocabulary words and sentences are introduced. The disc is mostly in English, with the Spanish words and phrases worked in. It's good for children who do not speak Spanish to learn some basics, but if you are looking for an immersion-Spanish disc, look elsewhere.

The stories often have different characters saying the same sentence, changing the verb forms/possessives as appropriate, which is useful and teaches a little basic sentence structure in addition to vocabulary words. Each story ends with a couple of songs in Spanish.

My kid is nuts about these discs (I bought the other set as well) as I mentioned, and she does repeat the words while the disc is played. It's been a worthwhile purchase for me to entertain her in the car. ... Read more

Product Description
The writings of Teresa of Ávila and the Spanish mystics, most notably John of the Cross and Luis de León, aroused passionate responses when they were composed. Though today's students realize that religious beliefs have wide-ranging consequences, they are presented with particular challenges in studying the Spanish mystics because of their unfamiliarity with the linguistic, social, and religious history of early modern Spain. This volume is designed to help instructors elicit students' curiosity, sympathy, and appreciation for writings that can at first seem alien or confusing.

Part 1, "Materials," recommends accessible editions and translations; print, electronic, and visual resources; background and critical studies; and sources on the philosophical and theological responses to the Spanish mystics. Part 2, "Approaches," presents methods for teaching the historical contexts of and various theoretical perspectives on the mystics' works. Contributors consider these authors in relation to Islamic and Jewish mysticism, the traditions of women's writing, feminism, theology, and autobiography. They also recommend ways to teach particular texts in different kinds of courses and institutions. ... Read more

These critical studies propose innovative readings and overall reformulations of the texts and authors that stand as representative of the period for the contemporary reader. The first group of articles refers to reports, chronicles, and Renaissance epics, a vast block of texts that fall in most cases halfway between history and narrative fiction, and examine the experiences of the discovery, the conquest, and the colonization of the new territories. The second group concentrates on regionally marked texts from the Baroque period, especially those of the central figure of the Mexican nun poet and intellectual, Sor Juana In s de la Cruz. Finally, there are some essays on representative texts of the latter part of the colonial period. ... Read more

Product Description
Into the Mainstream: Essays on Spanish American and Latino Literature and Culture is a direct outgrowth of Jorge Feblesâs involvement with the annual conference of the American Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association. In that sense, the compilation expands on a project initiated in 1993 by Helen Ryan-Ransom with her book Imagination, Emblems and Expressions:Essays on Latin American, Caribbean, and Continental Culture and Identity (Bowling Green, Ohio: Bowling Green State University Popular Press, 1993). David William Foster, who penned a lengthy preface to that collection, justified its intent by underscoring:âThe very fact that our approach to culture is dominated by categories based on high, academic, institutionalized phenomena poses from the very outset the question of how to deal with all those other cultural manifestations that do not comfortably assimilate to the accepted canon❠(Ryan-Ransom 3).The past fourteen years, however, have witnessed a radical transformation of that so-called canon due to the widespread acceptance of ideas espoused by cultural theorists like García Canclini, Homi Bhabba, Said, Stuart Hall, Benhabib, Bourdieu and countless others. Therefore, the ambivalence regarding what constitutes culture identified by Foster is inoperative nowadays to a substantial degree. In fact, a fundamental component of the postmodern outlook resides in the ability to blend comfortably the high and the low, the elitist and the popular realms of production in a multiplicity of textual artifacts, creative as well as critical in nature.Hence, the essays that conform Into the Mainstream do not question barriers anymore, nor do they expound on the need to assign a discursive intellectual space to matters pertaining to popular culture. Thus, this collection espouses an inclusive approach in which a variety of analytical approaches coalesce to reflect on an equally kaleidoscopic textuality. Pursuant to its comprehensive nature, Into the Mainstream airs established as well as developing critical voices so as to reflect both ideological continuity and evolving viewpoints. Scholars who have compiled strong academic records like Hortensia Morell, Raquel Rivas Rojas, Elsa Gilmore, David Petreman and Benjamín Torres Caballero share a venue with younger critics like Corey Shouse Tourino, Roberto Vela Córdova, Stacy Hoult, Eduardo del Río, Bruce Campbell, Laura Redruello, Dinora Cardoso and April Marshall, as well as with two graduate students about to complete their academic preparation:Nuria Ibáñez Quintana and María Teresa Vera Rojas. The result is an eclectic compilation meant to elicit discussion on the basis of its variety.Into the Mainstreamâs primordial objective is to place these provocative essaysâwhich are expanded versions of papers presented during the annual gathering of the American Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association in the period 2002-2005âalong with the numerous subjects they treat in the academic mainstream where they rightfully belong. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great and Not Just for Kids
This is a really great book for learning spanish. I can tell that it would be really great for kids but I think it is also good for adults who are just starting to try and learn spanish. I'm in my mid-twenties/no kids and this book seems really great to me and not only that it's cheap I got the kindle version for just over 7 dollars. I wish I had this book when I was a kid, I can tell that kids would have a lot of fun with it. If your getting it for a kid though I imagine they would probably enjoy the non-kindle version more so they can write in it. This book goes over a lot of vocabulary and grammar that I am learning in my college Spanish 101 class and because it's designed for kids it's not intimidating at all. This book is great! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice, simple book
We ordered this for our church preschool library and the kids love the simple colors and pictures. The teachers love the simple translations

4-0 out of 5 stars cute
Cute, bought for my 18month old, my girls haven't read it all that much, they seem to prefer Boynton and Leslie Patrelli but its a good edition to the book shelf.

This book is good to my son and i ...easy to read big pictures bright colors easy and fun on the left side of the book is all colors in english and spanish, on the other side "right' colorful objects in spanish and english.....i am teaching my son spanish and he smiles every time i ask him to point out the red apple in spanish or the blue fish in spanish thanks Rebecca will purchase the numbers book next!

5-0 out of 5 stars It depends where you are from...
This book is wonderful! My daughter is almsot 3 and everynight she wants to read this and other books by Rebecca Emberley. She gets so excited and is starting to use the new words she's learned throughout the day.As far as the grammer is concerned.. It depends where you're from.I'm half puerto rican and half el salvadorian and grew up speaking spanish everyday cause my mom didn't speak english. For example Banana in spanish can be said as "guineo" or "banana" with an accent. I grew up saying both. Another example beans can be said "frijoles" or "abichuelas"; car "carro" or "coche" When I say coche I think of stroller but in el salvador "coche" means car; "frijoles" in puerto rico "abichuelas" in el savador; Money "plata" "dinero" etc..I Plan to teach my daughter the words That not only I recomend her to use but also to let her know it can be said in other ways as well and use whatever you feel comfortable saying..again it all depends on where you come from...the important thing is that my daughter loves them, it encourages her to read and learn a new language..that's all that matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous poster is wrong about translation
It is common knowledge that an article needs to be placed in front of nouns in Spanish and that this is not necessary for English nouns. It is absolutely correct that this was done in this book.

"Color café" is a term used quite often throughout Latin America, but especially in Mexico and Central America, to mean brown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, treats you like an adult, and great for independent learners
I'm still working my way through this book, getting near the end, and I love it.Open it up, and it looks like a book, not a textbook. There's not a lot of white space on each page, which makes it look dense in comparison with more contemporary books, but I like that he speaks in whole sentences and not bullet points or lists, and for me, anyway, that seems to be a better way to talk about the complexity and delights of language.

So if you enjoy reading a well-written paragraph more than a powerpoint chart, this book will please you as it informs. The author shows his admiration and respect for Spanish, and includes notes about usage and connotation that any lover of language will wonder about when learning, instead of just giving you the rules.

The book does cover a lot of information, and once I finish this first read, I'll go back to it for reference as I improve and learn.I'd been watching some videos (well, The Wire) with both subtitles and dubbing on in Spanish, just to hear the language more (no Spanish-speaking communities around where I live now), and that helped me notice and wonder about certain patterns in conversation - this book has been great for explaining the things I've noticed casually through that more haphazard exposure, and it does so in a good, solid prose with a distinct voice.

What I love most about this book is the voice - he's old school in the best sense, he neither talks down to you in this age of books "For Dummies" or "Complete Idiots", nor does he use dry educational jargon, nor does he view language learning as a pesky inconvenience to be done as quickly as possible (in the car, in the shower, 5 minutes a day, etc.).I looked at and was uninspired by many beginner books that took one of those approaches, and am happy I settled on this one instead.

One quibble: toward the end of the book, where he gives a bunch of irregular verbs, some of the declensions are listed with the first person for each tense and then "etc.", leaving the reader to flip back to the original regular tense charts to see what you would fill in there for the 2nd and 3rd person. It would have been nice to have the irregular verbs a little more thoroughly written out, but for that maybe another book that's just verb declension (like a Becherelle for Spanish, if it exists) would suffice as a reference.

In sum, reading this book is like listening to a teacher who knows his stuff and expects you to work hard, because there are no shortcuts to learning a language well. He doesn't spoon-feed, but does give suggestions for how to make the most of the material, on your own.If you're willing to take your time to think about and absorb a series of lessons that will build a strong base, I highly recommend this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old book, but a GREAT BOOK!
I have been taking Spanish for two semesters at a local community college and had to purchase two "one hundred dollar" books.(Actually $150 each with workbooks!)Those were good to follow along with the instructors, are only good with help, but that is where this book comes in!

Yes, it is old but I have found this book to be the best resource I have. This book actually explains the Spanish language to you rather than just drills or by clumsy illustrations.(In fact, this book has no pictures or drawings!)

One thing I really like about the book is the emphases on idioms. The Spanish language does not translate directly to English and vice versa (of course!).So this book has explained to me many phrases I have come across in my readings which did not make sense to me before.

The only thing I do not really like about the book is the "reading selections".Yes, they are interesting...but they are extremely technical; using words which most people wouldn't even run into the English or Spanish languages. But then again, maybe I'm just whining.Once again, the book was written in 1958, maybe our reading abilities have declined.Or is that just me?

I have completed reading 75% of the book and once I am finished I plan on reading it again to try and soak as much of the knowledge into my thick skull.

Great book, buy it!Beware, it is not easy reading and you need to be motivated to make it through.

Now, judging from my writing ability the next book I will need is an English 101 book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes you far quickly
Duff's "Spanish for Beginners" is concise, comprehensive, and especially suitable for self-study. It starts from the very beginning, requiring no prior exposure to Spanish, but by the end one's knowledge reaches significantly past the beginner's level; the goal seems to be dealing with unabridged Spanish by the time one has gone through it.

To allow such rapid language acquisition, the approach taken differs from many other textsbooks. There are no drill exercises; instead, the student is asked to be proactive while learning the language. The grammar is eventually taken to a fairly advanced point; the explanations are not exhaustive, however, and for the most part come in digestible chunks. Once the foundations are laid in the initial chapters, reading unmodified excerpts from original literature supplied with interlinear translations is used as the key teaching tool; the selections are not very long, are quite pleasant and include both Spanish and Latin American authors. Finally, a targeted situational vocabulary (airport, hotel, bathroom, restaurant, etc.) with sufficient examples of use is introduced in each section, nicely balancing the more literary flavor of the reading selections.

I found that by supplementing Duff with little more than a set of inexpensive tapes with dialogues, a simplified first reader, and a good dictionary, I was able to understand unabridged Spanish in both written and oral forms much sooner than I had expected. During a subsequent trip to Spain, I found that I could speak the language too.

This book was first published in 1958, so some (minor) aspects of grammar, orthography, and usage may have evolved since then, but I found them to be inconsequential to the learning process. The book performs an incredible feat of teaching Spanish from scratch to a rather advanced level in only some 330 rather modestly-sized pages, and its approach has worked very well for me. I recommend it highly.

NOTE: The book does not come with tapes, but I accompanied Duff with the inexpensive collection of graded dialogues provided on two 90-minute cassettes in "Spanish on the Go" from Barron's, and I found them to be very helpful and sufficient to break "the sound barrier". (Beware of the Castilian Spanish, rather than Latin American, accent on those tapes, at least in the first edition I have; this may or may not be what you want.) Any simple introductory course on cassettes would also do, and may be preferable for many learners as a starting point; Duff can then be used, in parallel or subsequently, to teach onself the rest of the language, since it covers far more advanced material than most audio-based courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars no-nonsense; pretty good
More like 3 1/2 stars. I had no Spanish background and got this book hoping to learn a little bit before heading for Latin America. The method and organization are quite good. You start reading passages in Spanish early on, including real literature instead of ad-hoc stuff. Grammar and conversation are efficiently presented. It demands a certain self-motivation, it's not one of those passive, stupid language books with big pictures and questions where you just fill in blanks. On the whole, it compares favorably with the Teach Yourself Spanish book by Kattan-Ibarra, which I also tried and I found to be quite good (maybe better).

The one big problem with Duff's book is that there's no cassette with it--only the wise but useless suggestion that the reader seek out a native speaker. Also, the book is dated. It's from the early 60s, and doesn't seem to have been edited much since. The conversational stuff, while effective, at times doesn't sound too natural. Still, it's a pretty rigorous, intensive book, especially for getting a quick handle on reading Spanish, and better than a lot of the junk out there which I've also sifted through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best approach I've found for learning Spanish
I have tried and failed with other approaches to learning Spanish. This book seems much better. It emphasizes an understanding of the language over mere memorization of phrases.I have purchased Duff's French andItalian for Beginners, too.I hope they work as well as the Spanish one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For My Baby
I purchased this book and others for my baby who is only 15 months. They are hardcover and basic. My child is already associating things. She is also learning spanish very easily.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbers
As a child, the Spanish language was not something that I was familiar with. Even so, I still knew how to count up to 10 and found excitement in my ability to repeat the numbers to my friends. This "Numbers" book is a terrific tool to use to learn Spanish numbers. The pictures of animals increase as the numbers do and is a great way for children to remember the numbers as associated with a specific animal. The board feature of the book has allowed it to last even after my paperback books have fallen apart. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn how to count in both Spanish and English. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a good resource for parents OR educators
As a native Spanish speaker I do not recommend this book.I even found a major spelling error ! The translations are poor and the choice of songs/rhymes are extracted from English ones.I was excited to buy it , but had to return it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This book has a great variety of writings. The stories are very interesting, and studying the rhymes is a great way to get a more nuanced understanding of Spanish. I use this book to help me improve my Spanish language skills. I am sure the book is good for reading to children, but I purchased it to help me learn to speak Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the bilingual preschool teacher
This book has many helpful short stories, songs, rhymes, and fingerplays for the preschool teacher that children will enjoy. The drawback to the book is the lack of a CD so that you can hear the songs, however if you are already familiar with many English and Spanish childhood songs this shouldn't be a problem. An example of the tunes that this book uses are "The Alphabet Song," "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "Do You Know the Muffin Man," "Brilla, Brilla Estrellita," "Are You Sleeping," "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad," "Yankee Doodle," "The Addams Family," and others. I absolutely love this book! I checked it out of the library and now am looking to purchase it to have for myself. The stories etc are great, reminds me of my childhood and I love having the Spanish version on one side, and the English on the other. It's a great way to learn a language.

Thin plot, thinly developed characters, not the author's best. The Pillars of the Earth, Eye of the Needle, and Dangerous Fortune stand out as by far his best.Triple is interesting, but not nearly the suspense, drama or richly developed characters of Follett's best... not worth a read in my opinion. ...
