Product Description
This teacher's resource book offers flexible photocopiable worksheets which are designed for use with lower-attaining and special-needs pupils in their work on the National Curriculum core study unit "Medieval Realms". It is a companion to a picture pack for pupils. The Schools History Project special needs support material has been developed to meet a specific demand from schools for material that has all the hallmarks of SHP's "real history" approach - in which pupils investigate issues and explore evidence for themselves, and reach their own conclusions - but which also recognizes the very real problems some pupils have with the language of written source material and the unstructured nature of some historical tasks. These materials are based on the "real history" approach of the "Discovering the Past" series for Key Stage 3 pupils, but it can be used independently or alongside other courses. Together, the Teacher's Resource Book and the Picture Pack provide various flexible schemes of work which should suit the majority of classroom situations. There are three "Pathways" through this material. Pathway 1 is for pupils who have severe difficulties with reading.Using the Picture Pack, pupils can investigate a "minimum entitlement" Medieval Realms unit through the use of pictorial source material alone. Pathway 2 is for lower-ability pupils who can, nonetheless, cope with a certain amount of carefully targeted reading and writing. The Picture Pack and the differentiated worksheets, games and stories in the Teacher's Resource Book together aim to provide a flexible alternative to using a textbook. A wide range of activities are provided that should allow pupils to do real history for themselves. This pathway can operate independently of any textbook. Pathway 3 is for use in classes where SHP's "Contrasts and Connections" or "Discovering Medieval Realms" are being used. The Teacher's Resource Book provides a wide range of materials to support slower learners and reluctant readers, by simplifying written source material and providing structures for pupils' written responses to questions in the textbook. SHP's "Medieval Realms" unit was awarded the "TES History Textbook Award" in 1993. ... Read more

Product Description
After four years of research and associated with the UNESCO teacher education project, "Special Needs in the Classroom" has been written to provide a source of ideas for teacher educators who wish to improve teachers' skills in dealing with pupil diversity in mainstream schools. There has been a growing awareness that conventional systems of categorization are inadequate for representing the diversity of special needs, and that mainstream schools will have to adapt in order to provide for all their pupils. The book promotes a rethinking of our perception of the nature of special needs by arguing that the dominant approaches to educational difficulty can in fact work to the disadvantage of those children they aim to serve. It goes on to state the teacher education changes that would necessarily be entailed. A description of the UNESCO project is given, with an account of the research undertaken. Full advice on teacher education methods is offered, including accounts of initiatives already undertaken. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Aspergers Social Skills
I would like to recommend this book for all Professional and parents who are assisting individuals with Aspergers or and ASD condition. This is an easy to use and very practical resource that I have personally found to be very effective. I am responsible for a Outreach Service to individuals with a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome in Ireland. I look forward to other resources for this author.

3-0 out of 5 stars For the mentally challenged teen
This book really doesn't apply (except for a FEW pages) to my students. It's more for teens who are higher functioning or not at all mentally challenged.I can see for troubled teens that it would be helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Social Skills Activities
I really like the book I use it every week. It has activities for several of my clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars good books
Great book!I am using this with my 5th grade son who has attention issues as well as my 4th grade son.The book is very user friendly. It teaches skills I would not necessarily think of - but useful.I definitely think this will improve both of their social skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Exercises
I have two stepsons, ages 10, one with PDD-NOS and the other with Aspergers. We have done the first two lessons with my stepson who has PDD-NOS and it is really covering subjects that are vital to his social success. The book approaches them in fairly mature ways that are still simple enough for him. I think it would be appropriate for children older than him but I liked this book for him more than the other version for younger children. I think he is right on the edge for age appropriate for this book, so I would recommend it for over 10 years. ... Read more

Product Description
Numerous studies have cited lack of administrativesupport as the most frequent source of attritionamong special educators. Not much is known, however, about what school principals actually do or say thatis perceived as effective administrative support. This study used a combined quantitative andqualitative approach designed to gain knowledgethrough survey methodology and semi-structuredinterviews based on four dimensions of support:emotional, instrumental, informational, andappraisal. Surveys were distributed to teachers atfive elementary schools in California. In addition,to allow for discussion and obtain more in depthresponses, semi-structured interviews were conductedwith three of the special education teachers andthree of the general education teachers who weresurveyed, and three of their principals.
