A very nice book
This is a very attractive and interesting book, very well organized.I have a few quibbles:You can't find the brain and nervous system in the drawing of spider anatomy on p. 200 (maybe hidden under the digestive tract, in green).Fang placement in the drawing of a salticid face on p. 204 is a little off (should originate at lateral distal margins of chelicerae), and there are many spiders with much more powerful chelicerae to illustrate the point here.Classification jumps directly from "suborder" to "family" (intermediate clade levels, as studied recently, are quite interesting), and the spider section is all-too-brief.However, the insect material is quite diverse and interesting.In general, the drawings are very skillfully done.This is a good book for general interest, or for a public school libriary

One of the best books on spiders and insects
Also ten stars, if possible! No more words needed, this an excellent compilation on insects and arachnids. Beautiful pictures, tons of information, diagrams and charts. Just like the other book from Firefly "Reptiles and Amphibians", this is one of the best encyclopedias to have in your personal library. Marvelous book, indeed.

I looked far and wide
finally i found it.THE BEST INTRODUCTORY ENTOMOLOGY BOOK!My father has a new-found interest in insects, and I spent all of the Christmas season trying to find an entomology book that was informative, yet concise and visually stimulating.This book is FAR OUT.It has great photographs and HIGHLY educational, without going into boring list/description jargon.This book is great for anyone interested in insects or just an entertaining read.

Excellent Compilation
The Firefly Encyclopedia series are uniformly excellent.There are several current volumes (Insects & Spiders, Reptiles & Amphibians, and Birds).With luck additional volumes will be added (I'd be especially keen to see one on fishes).The series picks up the tradition started with the David Macdonald's "Encyclopedia of Mammals" by having numerous experts contribute information about the organisms they study.Thus, each species or group of organisms is described by the scientists who know them best.The result is a truly amazing compilation of information about each type of organism.

The book is lavishly illustrated.There are tons of amazing photographs and lots of beautifully rendered drawings.The text is well written and generally easy to follow.Some sections are fairly technical (I have a Ph.D. in Biology and got lost a few times), but probably 90% or more should be accessible to anyone. I strongly recommend this book for biologists, naturalists, and people interested in wildlife.It would make an excellent gift for a young person (probably junior high +) who likes animals.

A pleaser for Spider fans!
I've never read a Spiderman graphic novel like Revelations: uncut. A real treat for any one whose read the end of the clone saga in the 90s or have been missing this book: Cop it!

The conclusion to the 1990s Spider-Man clone saga! What's not to love!?

If you can find a copy of this book nowadays, GET IT! It's been out of print for a decade now and secondary market prices are skyrocketing! Especially considering that Ultimate Spider-Man just recently completed their own clone saga. Newer readers wanting the back story and basis for this newer, Ultimate Universe clone saga will be trying to find this book.

In regards to story & art, this is pretty typical late 1990s Marvel fare. Suprises, shock deaths, suspense, and the return of a long dead adversary, plus 14 NEVER BEFORE RELEASED pages make this TPB book a must have.Consider this the "director's cut" complete with deleted scenes version of the 1990s Spider-Man Clone Saga conclusion storyline.

Best of the Goblin Saga
Number 1: Ultimate Spider-man is not the same with Stuart Immonen, in a good way.I apoligize, but I was really getting tired of Bagley's drawings.Immonen does so much justice to this series by giving us art that parallels with the writing of the series.Both the writing and art are now in a pristine sync, and we get the goods through every comic.Thanks Immonen!

Number 2:Finally a worthy Goblin story.It happens to be a conclusive one, which leads me to say it goes out with a bang.I was very bored through the Hobgoblin arc, but this one makes that one look like torture.The danger level is raised much higher, and the dialogue is thrown at full speed and power.Bendis has returned to writing spider-man stories that truly build suspense on a large level.I would say that this series dipped low during the Deadpool arc, but after Clone Saga and this trade, the series is back to its full potential.

There you have it.Great writing and great art.Bendis, for the first time recently, has gotten me to say out loud "What's going to happen next?"

Fantastic Story!
A well written and plotted conclusion to the Goblin Saga in the ultimate spiderman world. This brings it all full circle and really leaves the reader with a sense of closure. I highly doubt this will be the end of either Goblin, but for now this will do.

Collects issues #112-117 of the long-running Marvel Ultimate Universe title
This nineteenth Ultimate Spider-Man trade paperback collects issues #112-117 of the Brian Michael Bendis-written Ultimate Universe comic book series.Penciler Stuart Immonen starts his USM run with these issues - I prefer longtime USM artist Mark Bagley's take on Peter Parker/Spider-Man and his associates.Peter has broken up with former X-Man Kitty Pryde and resumed his relationship with Mary Jane, and has high school classes with both.Caught by S.H.I.E.L.D., Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, is imprisoned in the hyper-maximum security Triskelion, but not for long.The story flows toward the inevitable Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin battle, but offers a surprise ending that pushed my rating from three to four stars."Death of a Goblin" is one of the better story arcs of this long-running series.I liked the regular Marvel Universe Osbornes better, though the Ultimate ones are fiercer.

Continuing the awesome...
- Shocker (as he takes out a police car during a chase): "Hey, I got one!! I got one!!"
- Spidey (whilst kicking Shocker's mug in): "I got one, too! Awww, but mine's a big tool!"

Having just re-read these two trades back to back, I thought I'd try for a two-fer, double dipping on both ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 19: DEATH OF A GOBLIN and Vol. 20: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN & HIS AMAZING FRIENDS. Firstly, I harbor mad friggin' love for this series. With his Ultimate Spidey stories, Brian Michael Bendis has managed to reinvent and reinvigorate the Spider-Man mythos, and shiny-domed dude has even managed to stick with the thing for over 130 issues now. Artist Mark Bagley also gets massive golf claps for his extensive run, and it's no lie that his take on Ultimate Spidey has become THE definitive rendering. Having said that, Stuart Immonen, not exactly a scrub himself, has been doing righteous things with the artwork. I dig that Immonen keeps Spidey looking like a kid in tights, instead of some over-muscly bloke all of a sudden.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 19: DEATH OF A GOBLIN collects issues #112-117 and features the escape of Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin, from the Triskelion's maximum security compound and the resultant wigging out of Peter and Mary Jane. As Osborn goes about his machinations to take down Nick Fury (who, following the goings-on in the Ultimate Power mini-series, isn't around much anymore), interim S.H.I.E.L.D. director Carol Danvers tries to catch up with all the crazy going down. And, lest you forget that this is a certain teen wall-crawler's book, you best believe the Goblin's not forgotten Peter Parker.

What I probably relish best in the Ultimate Universe is the sense of freshness it invokes. Not only do longtime Marvel characters get a do-over, but there seems to be more immediacy to the stuff that happens to them. And, importantly, while still steeped in outrageous fantasy, Ultimate Universe somehow feels closer to reality than the mainstream 616. Whenever an Ultimate character dies, it feels more permanent. All this leading to me saying that DEATH OF A GOBLIN is one of the best story arcs in this series.

Bendis is very good with the superhero stuff, starting off with Spidey and the newly costumed Shadowcat early on taking out the Shocker in what feels like a throwaway sequence. The stakes quickly go up with Osborn's prison breakout because, as long time readers know, Osborn knows Spidey's civilian identity and evil dude's even flung Mary Jane off a bridge. With Pete ensuring that Aunt May and Mary Jane skedaddle the eff out of town, his bump of responsibility makes him stay on.

Pete's taken on the Kingpin and Venom and sundry wacky clones, but let's face it, the Goblin has always been Spidey's traditional nemesis. Ultimate Goblin is immeasurably more powerful than Spidey, and more intelligent, and I like that Spidey always has to struggle like epic crapcakes just to eke out a win. Here, it's not even Pete who finally takes the Goblin down.

Bendis's gift for funny and insightful dialogue is on display again. Ultimate Spidey, I think, is hands down funnier than 616 Spidey. Bendis balances the colossal fighty fights with very well done character moments, with the Midtown High sequences proving to be enthralling bits. Pete and Kitty are paired up with one of those baby doll monitoring assignments (and, as one panel reveals, Kitty still isn't quite over Pete's break-up with her). I'm also getting a kick out of the school dynamics with specifics to Kitty Pryde's identity being public knowledge. On the Triskelion side, Spidey and Carol Danvers trade in some hilarious banter, the funny mostly coming from Pete's end. Things climax tragically (all you have to do is peek at the title of this trade) and there's a coda which takes place in Pete's classroom, in a moment tinged with poignancy. A great story arc.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Vol. 20: SPIDER-MAN & HIS AMAZING FRIENDS collects issues #118-122 as, in the wake of the traumatic events in DEATH OF A GOBLIN, Bendis takes it down a notch and focuses on the personal lives of Pete and his circle of pallies. A fun story arc.

***SPOILER alert for this next paragraph***

Midtown High is still mourning the passing of Harry Osborne. To get out of their funk, Pete and his friends decide to hang out at the beach, accompanied by Johnny Storm (Human Torch) and Bobby Drake (Iceman). Night falls on the beach and the kids are chillin' around a campfire, when, shockingly, dot dot dot...

Old fogeys may get that the three-part "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" is a fond callback to the awesome 1980s cartoon show of the same title (ah, anyone remember Ms.Lion?). So it makes sense that this arc features Iceman (come to apologize to Kitty), as well as the debut of Ultimate Firestar. And, predictably, the manifestation of a new mutant gets a "Hruh?" not only from the X-Men but from Magneto. Bendis effectively serves up his decompression style of storytelling, as these three issues generate tons of cool dialogue, with Spidey and Iceman trying their best to talk down a frantic and frightened Firestar. Not much of a superhero throwdown in this one, which is okay, as I found the conversations among the cast so much more involving. Also, seriously, Peter just ain't competent with keeping his secret identity secret. Seriously.

The last two issues in this trade are kinda one-offs. First, we learn how Pete and Kitty fare with their classroom project. It involves an arduous explanation from Peter (to his teacher, in front of the class) as to why their assigned fake baby doesn't exactly end up unscathed. However, when that farfetched explanation features Omega Red and the epic destruction of the Daily Bugle offices, well, someone's G.P.A. is bound to drop.

Issue #122 starts off sunnily enough, as Peter video-records Mary Jane as she tries to conduct Man on the Street interviews but can't even say her name right. Things take a deadly serious turn when the Shocker, "the biggest loser in Loserville," surfaces and surprisingly beats holy heck out of and then kidnaps Spider-Man. Which goes to show, even the most ridiculed supervillain is still someone not to be effed with.

As these issues demonstrate, there's more gravitas now to young Peter Parker. Wallcrawling guy has fought monumental battles and experienced wondrous things and has incured hurtful losses, but, thru all this, Brian Michael Bendis has been able to preserve the core of Peter Parker, keeping him on point while sustaining that lighthearted flavor. Nothing probably encapsulates this as much as this following bit:

- Firestar: "You're an amazing friend. You ran to help me. I won't forget this."
- Spidey: "Well, just remember that with great power there must also come great responsibility."
- Firestar: "Now you sound like a tool."

Hah! And you got her "amazing friend" reference, right?

The Ultimate Universe was built on the success of this title, thanks to Bendis's ability to generate pathos and to put a fresh spin on age-old Spider-Man tropes. Ultimate Peter Parker, terrific in all his teenhood and in the infancy of his superhero career, is nowadays my favorite version of the web-spinner. Mark Bagley has put in serious work, as has Stuart Immonen. With Ultimate titles getting shut down left and right and characters getting killed off everywhere (thanks, ULTIMATUM) and with #133 projected as possibly the last Ultimate Spidey issue (#130 is currently what's on sale), I'm just trying to soak it all in, brother. All the while hoping that this doesn't put a moratorium on this little corner of Marvel. That would suck immensely.

Is this series ever going to slow down?
Every time I read an Ultimate Spider-Man collection, I think the series must have hit it's peak. But the stories so constantly entertaining -- intense without being bleak, emotional without being sappy.
This is the first full collection with new artist Stuart Immonen after years of Mark Bagley as sole artist. Mr. Bagly defined the look and feel of the series, but Mr. Immonen steps in with his own excellent take on Spider-Man's world. It was sad to see Mr. Bagley go, but I'm looking forward to more from Mr. Bagley.

One of the best aspect of USM is seeing Peter Parker's personal life. This volume furthers the relationship with Mary Jane (just a bit) and gives us more of ex-girlfriend (and X-Man) Kitty Pride. The writing is so good that the conversations in the high school hall are just as exciting as the battle with the Goblin.

Great book for beginners
This is an excellent book for all sorts of people who want to identify spiders. It has lots of images to help you find the spider you have seen or captured for a closer look. As a grandmother who bought several spider books for this purpose, this was the best for beginners, children, grandchildren and grandma.

mine was cut improperly by the machine, so some of the words got cut off and it's pretty unreadable. It's also for kids, not for someone who really wants to learn about spiders. If you're looking for something very informative and interesting, try this book: Biology of Spiders, 2nd Edition

A beginner-friendly guide
First, like all of the Golden Guides, this handy little book is written for beginners -- it introduces the science of spiders in such a way that both enthusiastic kids and interested adults are able to comprehend and appreciate the topic. Even so, it's not the lightest of reading. Here's a sample sentence from the book, picked entirely at random: "Pirate spiders are recognized by the row of strong curved setae on the front margins of the lower segments of the first pair of legs." Do a pop quiz on the next 12 people you see, and ask them what "setae" are.

What makes Golden Guides appealing to young people is the attractive illustrative style. As an illustrator and photographer, I've found that hand drawn or painted pictures tend to capture the imagination of young people and put them more at ease with text that may be more challenging. The book's illustrations are accurate, if occasionally not as crisp and detailed as one would like for identification purposes.

Another characteristic of Golden Guides is that they are most helpful for identifying a limited - although not small - number of common species. If the specimen in question isn't in the book, you may still be able to find clues as to similar species within the group so that you can go on to track down the bug or fossil or flower or spider in question. Every book has a limit, and with nearly 40,000 spider species identified worldwide, I've yet to see a definitive guide to all of them! By my estimate, this book contains about two hundred spiders and an assortment of mites, tics, and scorpions. Oddly enough, it also includes millipedes and centipedes, which are a different group of arthropods altogether.

I've been reading Golden Guides since I was a geeky little nature kid. I still have a full set of them, and whenever I give away a copy to a budding naturalist (of any age), it must be replaced. The books have been around for many years, but that doesn't mean the information is dated. The most recent revision for "Spiders and Their Kin," for example, is 2002. Interestingly, early guides are very collectible and at least one website is devoted to collecting them.

All of the Golden Guides are well written, beautifully illustrated, and they make excellent family nature guides. Grab a magnifying glass, a few Golden Guides, and Mom, Dad and the kids are ready to hit the trail! ... Read more

Making it to the Top!
"Top 'O Big Tree," based on the "Miss Spider" story by the same name, finds Squirt, Snowdrop and Bounce going out on a Bug Scout hike. Mr. Mantis is their scout leader, but he sprained his thorax, so Holley ends up leading the scouts.

Holley has his doubts. He's never done anything like this before and isn't even sure if he can make it to the top. He and the kids learn that sticking together is the best plan.

A reasonably pleasing adaptation of the TV story. Shows readers that if they put in the effort, they can come out on top. And parents can often be that helping hand in ensuring that success. ... Read more
