Product Description
This sturdy board book filled with big, bright, full-page, full-color illustrations has tiny sunken tracks on every page. Each track is just the right size so that toddlers can run a finger across the picture, following the trail of a friendly spider. Some trails are straight, while others have curves or wiggles or corners—but each trail moves across its picture in exactly the way that the story's hero moves. Very young children will love these stories, as they trace a finger through a flower garden, or up a flight of stairs, or across the back of a big, furry dog. ... Read more

Product Description

Both fascinating and frightening, the spider has a rich symbolic presence in the imagination. At once a representative of death, due to its fangs and dangerous poison, the spider can also represent life and creation, because of its intricate web and females who carry sacs of thousands of tiny eggs. In this wide-ranging book, Katarzyna and Sergiusz Michalski investigate the natural history and cultural significance of the spider.

From ancient Greek myth to Dostoyevsky, the authors explore the appearance of spiders in literature and their depictions in art, paying particular attention to the sculptures of Louise Bourgeois. Horror stories, science fiction, folklore, and children’s tales are also investigated, as well as the affliction of arachnophobia and the procedures used to cure it. The association of the spider with women or mothers is explored alongside the role of the spider metaphor in Freudian and Jungian psychoanalysis, and the Michalskis’ in-depth account concludes with a look at the unfavorable portrayal of the sinister spider in film.

A thorough and engaging look at the natural and cultural history of the spider, this book will appeal to anybody who admires or fears this delicate yet dangerous creature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
Actually, This was a brilliant way to add life to the series. Before Identnty Crisis, the Sipder-Man books were going downhill, and fast. This book shows Marvel's ability to give a title a quick boost (Identity Crisis sold very well on the shelves) And then return to a normal storyline afterwards, regaining their reading audience. And the Slingers weren't totally random either, each of the four represented a specific portion of Parker's personality, or Spider Man's powers. An excellent collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best reading of the year
Many are right when they say that Marvel has gone down as of recently, but this superbly written and illustrated book shows what Marvel can really do. Some of Spider-Man's best writers and artists got together on this book andforever made an imprint in the Marvel universe.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book excellentlly written depecting spiderman at his best
This book was a great tale of action and writing. The book is a must read which features four more great charachters added to the marvel lineup. It has action and humor in this awesome graphic novel showing the webslingerat his best . Excellently written and drawn no wonder it is a favorite ofmany fans of marvel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor writing
Another reson why I don't read comics very often anymore was because of cheap marketing gimmicks like this.Spider-Man wanted for crimes he did not commit, becomes four new different heroes with different customs, allthe while trying to clear his name. These four heroes later got their owncomic called Slingers, which is one of the worst comic book ideas evercreated.Marvel marketing thought up the whole thing. It's patheic andafter reading this junk, you can see why Marvel has lost so muchcreditability with it's readers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars buy it for the snl story
The Bill Hader/Seth Meyers story is hilarious and a very enjoyable read. The rest of the books content is utterly terrible. They were thrown in to be filler stories: two spider-ham stories and two spider-ma'am (aunt may = spiderman!) stories are the biggest offenders as upon learning of their existence from this book i knew they would be horrible. The other stories are revisits from different perspectives that add nothing to the Peter Parker storyline. One other story is mildly enjoyable for its action but that's it. Ultimately, not worth $20. Find the back issue of this in a comic shop somewhere or just buy it off amazon (I saw it was from $0.99 and up) and enjoy the short halloween story. The rest I will be trying to forget about for a long time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Spider Book
This book brings together a wide range of topics, presents them as short chapters and has many illustrations.I have borrowed this book from my university library and am dreading returning it.It seems as though it is a very very expensive book to buy.

There is chapters on just about every spider related topic, web-building, feeding, predators, regulation, chemistry of silk. This book is a classic except that it is becoming a little dated and the price is amazing!!!Borrow it from your library if you can. ... Read more
