Product Description
Does the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) exploit student athletes? Should athletes be paid? Does Title IX unfairly discriminate against men's sports? Are the salaries of head coaches excessive? Why is there so much cheating in college sports? Should the sports department be subsidized by the university? Why do universities place so much emphasis on athletics?

The above are just some of the questions raised in this sports economics textbook specially designed to teach undergraduate students about the college sports industry. The book focuses on the unique cartel structure of the NCAA and its member institutions to shed light on the labor market for college athletes and coaches; the tension between athletics and academics; the finance of athletic departments; the role of the media and commercialization of college sports; race, gender, and legal issues; and the desirability and plausibility of reform.

The book reinforces the economic analysis with a variety of examples of recent events and can be used as either a primary or secondary text.

Contents:

  • The History of Intercollegiate Athletics and the NCAA;
  • Cartels in College Sports;
  • The Labor Market for College Athletes;
  • Athletics and Academics;

3-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have it
If you want to pass, you gotta have this book to prepare.
Can be kind of dry, could be better organized. On the whole, it does what it should.
Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook for ACSM studying
This textbook serves as a great starting place for studying for the ACSM test. It goes into more detail than the Review guide. I also took the 3 day workshop and with this book, it covers a lot of the testing topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best resource, but a good secondary review
I have been teaching fitness for several years and wanted to get a personal trainer certification.Based on the learning materials available, I chose to go with ACSM rather than ACE.

However, once I got this book, I quickly realized I also needed to get the text book (ASCM Personal Trainer Resource Book) as there were no examples to support why certain questions were asked or not.

Once I had the text book, this made a lot more sense, and was a fairly useful review.

I suspect its also a very good resource for those who had taken the live seminars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource for any trainer!
I wasted a lot of money on other PT study materials and this was by far the best content AND the best value! You will not go wrong with this purchase! This is a comprehensive, hard cover, color photo and just an overall high quality book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative but DRY!
A great treatise on the relationship between America's love of sports and America's conflicted attitudes about race. But I can't imagine how the knowledgable authors could have written a book that is harder to read. They never use a simple word when a complex one will do; never go for short when long will do.

Don't read this book when you're sleepy, you'll never finish it.But if you are in a scholarly mode, you will learn a lot.I did. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Use it as kindling!!!
The book starts out with inaccurate statistics. This has to be on the part of the authors. It is easy to find the winningest teams of all time the list should be accurate. Coverage of the selected teams is poor. For 15 years of research this is garbage. The selection of teams is poor. The top teams are included as they should be. Some of the teams included should rarely be mentioned in the discussion of college football; while some of the of the teams that have been at the heart of the college football discussions over the last ten years are excluded. If you need kindling here you go. If you are interested in college football DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement, but not complete.
This book basically stops at around 1953.It doesn't go back further, which is surprising since there's another 60 years of CFB that's not covered. This book goes into greater detail for each covered season than the ESPN encyclopedia, but the ESPN one has more raw data.

5-0 out of 5 stars USA TODAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL ENCYLOPEDIA
Since I'm a huge fan of college football, this book is perfect for me.Comprehensive and enjoyable reading for the trivia nut. My only complaint is size of the book i which makes it somewhat cumbersome to read and store.
Would strongly recommend the book to any devotee of college ball for statistics on favorite college teams, games, and individual players (70 teams in all).I found it to be a real 'blast of the past'

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious fans of college football
I'll never read this entire book but that's not the point. It is a definitive reference for the last 50+ years of college football. Although only the major (70 or so) programs are covered, I have discovered facts I never knew. It's also a great book if you just have 10-15 minutes to read as you can browse a season or a few key games & then just leave it.Additionally, it makes a wonderful gift for the younger fans who can find a storehouse of information on why some of the greatest rivalries exist.Thorough, yet concise; reverent, yet with nuggets of humor.I recommend it without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
For the college football fan, this is an excellent reference work.It covers the game for each year from 1953 with game recaps, poll standings, and conference standings. There is also a year by year lineups and records for 70 major colleges.I recommend it highly. ... Read more

Product Description

Chronicling the uneven rise and slow decline of segregation in American college athletics, Charles H. Martin shows how southern colleges imposed their policies of racial exclusion on surprisingly compliant northern teams and explains the social forces that eventually forced these southern schools to accept integrated competition. Martin emphasizes not just the racism prevalent in football and basketball in the South, but the effects of this discrimination for colleges and universities all over the country. Southern teams such as the University of Alabama, University of Mississippi, and the University of North Carolina were obsessed with national recognition, but their Jim Crow policies prevented them for many years from playing against racially mixed teams from other parts of the country.

Devoting special attention to the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and teams in Texas, Martin explores the changing social attitudes and culture of competition that turned the tide and allowed for the recruitment of black players and hiring of black coaches. He takes a close look at the case of Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso), the first major white university in an ex-Confederate state to recruit African American athletes extensively. Martin skillfully weaves existing arguments and documentation on the integration of college sports with wide-ranging, original research, including previously unpublished papers and correspondence of college administrators and athletic directors uncovered in university archives.

Product Description
Audiences: A reference for exercise physiologists, physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists, nurses, physicians, health and fitness instructors, and clinical program directors; also a textbook for students studying chronic disease, disabilities, or multiple conditions.

Now in its third edition, ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities offers both exercise and health professionals the latest research and applications for integrating exercise into the treatment of 49 chronic diseases and disabilities. This reference was developed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and written by contributors with significant clinical and research experience in exercise programming for people with chronic conditions.

ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, contains tools to assist in the coordination of exercise within an integrated model of patient care. The updated edition presents a framework for determining functional capacity in persons with chronic diseases and disabilities and offers guidance in developing appropriate exercise programming to optimize functional capacity and reduce the compounding effects of exercise intolerance.

Unlike textbooks on special populations, ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities provides an overview of exercise management and addresses a wider spectrum of chronic diseases and disabilities. A consistent and concise format allows readers quick access to the pathology of interest, training and response to exercise, management of medications, and recommendations and special considerations of exercise testing and programming. Within the text, diseases and disorders are organized into six sections: cardiovascular; pulmonary; metabolic; orthopedic; neuromuscular; and cognitive, psychological, and sensory. Information presented for each of the 49 conditions is based on the most current clinical research.

The third edition includes an added color and contains new chapters on metabolic syndrome, stress and neuropsychiatric disorders, multiple chronic conditions, and fibromyalgia. Information on professional preparation in serving patients with chronic diseases or disabilities has also been added. In addition, reformatted tables provide quicker reference for testing and prescription data. Recommended readings found at the end of the book offer resources for more in-depth study.

The text also includes case studies for each condition. These cases, drawn from the contributor's clinical practice, illustrate how scientific research and clinical experience can combine in the development of an informed program of care for each patient. Case studies follow a set format, beginning with an overview and a subjective objective assessment plan (SOAP) report, followed by an exercise program and a follow-up statement for select cases.

ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, presents exercise as a viable component in the care and treatment of chronic disease and disability and offers guidance for appropriate exercise prescription that can positively affect functional capacity and slow or prevent exercise intolerance. As the prescription of exercise for persons with chronic conditions increases, exercise and health professionals require the appropriate data and tools to serve these individuals. ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities will assist professionals in translating the science of exercise physiology into the art of practicing exercise medicine. ... Product Description

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents' manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too frequent, and there is growing consensus for reform

In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports, and stiffening requirements for licensing agents. This revised and expanded second edition brings the volume up-to-date on recent changes in the industry, including:

- the closing of one of the largest agencies
- high-profile personnel moves
- passage of the federal Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act
- the National Football League's aggressive and high-profile efforts to regulate agents

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry.
It takes skill to deal with the massive corporations that are NFL, MLB, and NBA teams, just like it takes skill to play in those leagues. This newly expanded and updated second edition of "The Business of Sports Agents" is a guide to the subject of the title of the book. Covering the recent changes in the industry, including one agency closing in spite of its size, the constant changes that the business faces, and more. It also covers recent legal challenges, and the league's backlashes against some agents' tactics. "The Business of Sports Agents" is highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about American Sports Representation
I just wanted to refute the review below. It must be for another book. This book has nothing to do with British sports or soccer. It deals with American sports--basketball, baseball, and football--and discusses both the history and problems of sports representation. As earlier reviews recommend, it is a 'must read' for anyone aspiring to be a sports agent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better for Britons
This book is interesting, yet focuses primarily on sports business in the UK, and particularly in regard to dealings with soccer clubs. But in terms of applicability to the US market, it's mostly interesting only as a tangential reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars where's the book
This book is about 70 pages of recruiting information and 125 pages of addresses and phone numbers of schools. Given the fact that 25 pages are made available with the "look inside" feature, you can read 1/3 of the book online and get the names, phone numbers, and addresses of schools using the web or at the library.

The book provided some decent information at best, but when I got to page 80? and realized the book was over, I didn't feel very good and I certainly didnt need 125+ pages of addresses of schools I have no need to call or no desire to call..

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough presentation of high school sports recruiting
"Everything you need to know about college sports recruiting" is a very thorough presentation of the college sports recruiting process. The chapters are ordered in a logical and easy-to-read format. The pages arefilled with invaluable information to help the prospective recruit makesense in an often tumultuous process. However, this book is not just adescriptive analysis of the reruiting process. The author, Jim Walsh, showsthe importance of planning the whole recruiting experience. The authorchallenges the reader to set goals, and to realistically evaluate thesegoals. Co-inciding with this, Walsh offers many insights into whatstandards coaches at various colleges use to determine a successfulrecruit. Another major appeal of the book is the emphasis Walsh places onacademic performance relating to the recruiting process. The author showsthat academic performance will likely be a determining factor in thequality of the school that is attained. In fact,Jim Walsh shows that strongacademic performance will open many doors not otherwise possible withmediocre athletic performance. Emphatically, the author embraces the"student-athlete" philosophy. The "student-athlete"philosophy make this book an ideal purchase for both the prospective highschool recruit and the parents of the prospect!Additionally, the bookoffers a number of insights for parents to be aware of during the sportsrecruiting process. Finally, the author does an excellent job in

matching a player's talent with aparticular school program. Heencourages readers not to overlook the Division two and three schools, offering a number of personal stories of players who went on to havesuccessful professional careers. This is a comprehensive book that offersmany insights for the prospective college sports recruit. It is highlyrecommended for the prospective high school recruit and to the parents ofthe recruit. ... Product Description
Over the past century, high school and college athletics have grown into one of America's most beloved--and most controversial--institutions, inspiring great loyalty while sparking fierce disputes.

In this richly detailed book, Pamela Grundy examines the many meanings that school sports took on in North Carolina, linking athletic programs at state universities, public high schools, women's colleges, and African American educational institutions to social and economic shifts that include the expansion of industry, the advent of woman suffrage, and the rise and fall of Jim Crow. Drawing heavily on oral history interviews, Grundy charts the many pleasures of athletics, from the simple joy of backyard basketball to the exhilaration of a state championship run. She also explores conflicts provoked by sports within the state--clashes over the growth of college athletics, the propriety of women's competition, and the connection between sports and racial integration, for example. Within this chronicle, familiar athletic narratives take on new meanings, moving beyond timeless stories of courage, fortitude, or failure to illuminate questions about race, manhood and womanhood, the purpose of education, the meaning of competition, and the structure of American society. ... Product Description
Even the most casual sports fans celebrate the achievements of professional athletes, among them Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Louis. Yet before and after these heroes staked a claim for African Americans in professional sports, dozens of college athletes asserted their own civil rights on the amateur playing field, and continue to do so today.

Integrating the Gridiron, the first book devoted to exploring the racial politics of college athletics, examines the history of African Americans on predominantly white college football teams from the nineteenth century through today. Lane Demas compares the acceptance and treatment of black student athletes by presenting compelling stories of those who integrated teams nationwide, and illuminates race relations in a number of regions, including the South, Midwest, West Coast, and Northeast. Focused case studies examine the University of California, Los Angeles in the late 1930s; integrated football in the Midwest and the 1951 Johnny Bright incident; the southern response to black players and the 1955 integration of the Sugar Bowl; and black protest in college football and the 1969 University of Wyoming "Black 14." Each of these issues drew national media attention and transcended the world of sports, revealing how fans--and non-fans--used college football to shape their understanding of the larger civil rights movement. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Peterson's Sports Scholarships
This book is very comprehensive, except in one area. It provides a lot more information about specific university sports programs than other guides. This is to be expected from a Peterson guide. However, it contains less information than other guides about how talented athletes can get recruited if they don't attend high schools that are already sports powerhouses. Unfortunately, this book must be supplemented with another guide for students who don't already have recruiters looking at them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Scholarships
I thought it was one of the most comprehensive manuals out there in regards to sports scholarships in the US.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, Outdated Scholarship Information
This guide has great introductory information for athletes who are not NCAA Division I/II scholarship material, but could easily win scholarships at the Division III or NAIA schools. But, don't let the book's publication date fool you... the information in this book is outdated from 1998-99. The listings include had outdated contact information and has sports that have long ago been dropped from intercollegiate competition to "club" status. With the changes in the college sports scene brought on by the gender equity rules, the men's sports programs listed in this book include more sports than are actually at most colleges. Conversely, the women's sports programs listed here show fewer programs than are now available. This book is outdated terribly and misleads readers about what sports programs are at which schools and where the scholarship monies are currently.

3-0 out of 5 stars A"Howto" book without the "to"!
A very good uptodate book listing schools that give athletic scholarships for major and minor sports. This compilation is upto date and seemingly very complete. It is a invaluable tool for writing schools and inquiringabout sport scholarships.HOWEVER, the schools do not have the addresseslisted, only the name and city with a zipcode. This is highlydisappointing. It tells you how but not to...lame.Would probably try aless complete book with the address of athletic department and justsupplement the schools I could not find.A great resource tool made intomediocre.

2-0 out of 5 stars Free Information!
This type of scholarship book is Free for everyone at your local library! The 800 or more pages is mostly a listing of colleges addresses and phone numbers. All high school counselors will have a book similar to this in their office. Its good information to have, but you can get it for free! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, but Poorly written
Book so poorly written I would tell you to pass. I have read the book cover to cover. The information contained in the book is excellent and worthy of 5 stars , but I gave it three stars because it is so poorly organized and written. The author seem uncertain about whom he has written the book for. One minute he is addressing the student athlete, the next the parent. The information in the first Chapter is too perplexing for most high school athletes, and Chapter 6,7, 8 are tooelementary for most parents. Chapter 3: "what coaches want is" reads very awkwardly, and I needed to read it twice to understand the chapter. Sadly, I recommend you pass on this book,A better book is,"The High School Athlete's Guide to College Sports: How to Market Yourself to the School of Your Dreams".

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in college recruiting hands down!
I have read over 7 books that compete in the college athlete recruiting area and this book is the most complete and revealing.Prospective student athlete examples of success and pitfalls are very revealing.Addresses many sports with great detail from students prospective.Book has an in depth analysis of coaches observations and what they are looking for in student athlete and makes some of the other books seem like basic outlines with bullit points. An easy read for me in one sitting.I could not put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Student anecdotes here are valuable!
College sports recruiting is complicated -- NCAA restrictions on coaches (they used to text athletes, now they can't, etc.) are hard to keep up with and it is difficult to "position" the athlete among so many others.Further, even inadvertent mistakes can crush an application.Brown's key forte is tieing the rules and the advice directly into vignettes featuring various athletes at various times in the process. The vignettes give reality (and personality) to what in many other books on this subject is dry exposition of "just the facts, maam."Brown still is an active High School coach, so lives this stuff every day.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for any College Athlete
This book provides helpful instruction on the ins and outs of maneuvering through the complexities of college scholarships in a concise and easy to read format. This is a great guide for any athlete preparing for college.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid read with extremely useful information
I use to work in the recruiting office of a Major BIG XII university. From that first hand experience, I understand the things that can get the attention of the sports staff for future recruits. One top of all that, I have a cousin who is a D1 (FBS) player in soccer at a ACC school. This book provides fact, that is invaluable. It is a shame that I did not have this idea, or have this book for my cousin's parents.A must read. ... Product Description
Audiences: A supplemental text for undergraduate or graduate students in sport law courses in sport management, physical education, or recreation curriculums. Reference for libraries, sport officials, and paralegals.

Case Studies in Sport Law gives students an inside view of some of the most significant cases in sport law history--while dispensing with the legal jargon. This approach makes the book an ideal supplement for non-law students who want to understand the legal issues without having to wade through the legalese or needing a law school background to understand the cases. The cases are to the point and filled with real-life applications for sport management students.

To ensure that the most relevant cases were included in the text, a panel of experts selected 90 classic and modern cases using the Delphi technique. The cases represent the breadth of sport law affecting interscholastic and recreational programs, school districts, colleges and universities, pro sport franchises, sporting good manufacturers, and governing bodies. This expansive treatment allows students to recognize the considerable presence of legal issues in the sport industry, including the areas that the students are intending to enter.

Case Studies in Sport Law presents heavily abridged versions of the cases, allowing students to focus on the relevant details of the case rather than extraneous legal discussion. The text will help students grasp important concepts and generate thought on key topics that relate to the material in sport law texts and on subject matter that will be useful in their careers. These cases are split into the main subject areas common to sport law courses: antitrust law, constitutional law, contract law, employment law, intellectual property, products liability, statutory law, Title IX, and tort law.

Students also have online access to extended versions of the cases, where more detail and depth are provided. This allows instructors the flexibility of guiding students to basic comprehension of a case's facts or to a more complex understanding of the issues involved. The online student resource features questions that students can fill out electronically and then print and submit or e-mail to their instructors. Instructors will also gain assistance in teaching with the online instructor guide that includes the extended versions of the cases, answers to the review questions found in the student resource, and a case finder.

To facilitate reading and discussion, Case Studies in Sport Law offers

  • 10 to 12 short-answer questions per case, available electronically, which test students' comprehension and promote discussion;
  • brief chapter introductions that note the key issues and prepare the students on what to look for in the cases they are about to read; and
  • a case finder, in which students and instructors can easily find the cases that meet their needs; the electronic format allows for cases to be sorted by case dates, key terms, and other variables.
With sport litigation increasing, sport managers need an understanding of the legal environment. Case Studies in Sport Law is the right text at the right time to supplement a sport law or sport management course and expand students' understanding of sport law issues. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't order from this vendor
I ordered this book 2 weeks prior to a 5 week summer class. Going into the last week of class I still hadn't received the book, so I emailed the seller. He responded that he had totally forgot to mail it out. I asked for a refund instead, and he never responded. He just sent the book and hoped I'd forget about the refund. Very unprofessional and unorganized. Purchasing from him jeopardized my grade in my master's class, don't make the same mistake I did! ... Read more
