2-0 out of 5 stars Had high hopes but...
I was really hoping this book would meet my expectations.Through the years, I have always tried to gather any information I can about getting the most nutritional bang for my buck when it comes to feeding my often picky eaters.Because my kids don't always eat as much healthy food as I would like them to, I try to maximize by focusing on whole "superfoods" (wild salmon, blueberries, sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach, etc.) when I can.

The book opens up with a story about a family who is skipping breakfast and always eating fast food because they are so busy. The authors may think this represents most of America, but I (and probably others who are buying this book) don't eat this way.My kids always eat breakfast, and fast food, while not taboo in our house, certainly isn't a way of life!

I was really hoping this book would build on the knowledge that I have already have.Instead, I found much of the information to be confusing and conflicting. In chapter 1, the authors list the best and worst foods by category. For proteins, porterhouse steak and QUAIL of all things are listed in the "Best" category, but salmon is not even mentioned!Under the list of "worsts" are baking soda and baking powder, but many recipes in the back use these!"Diet" drinks and sweeteners are naturally listed as "worst" but again, there is a recipe that calls for sugar free jello! Moreover, there are a couple of actually very healthy foods that the authors say to avoid, such as coconut oil and AVOCADOS!!!Virgin coconut oil is excellent brain food (all baby formulas contain it--although I breastfed) and avocados, with their healthy fats and over 19 nutrients are as good for the brain as blueberries!

I was hoping at least the recipe section would have some new recipes that incorporated healthy foods in different ways.I hardly call Ants on a Log an exciting, let alone original recipe.Barbeque Sloppy Joes contain liquid smoke (can't be good for you!) and is a very basic recipe. And probably most surprising of all, more than a couple recipes call for either refrigerated biscuit dough, crescent rolls, or cookie dough. All of these contain partially-hydrogenated oils and artifical flavors, colors, and preservatives. One recipe even calls for Trix cereal (after the authors have said sugary cereals are bad for brain function!)Another recipe calls for 4 cups miniature marshmallows.I am not one of those parents who never give their kids sweets and never let them eat sugar cereals, but I do try to be sensible about them.My kids do eat more junk than I'd like. However, when I buy a book about "Brain Foods" I expect it to be genuine and contain information and recipes where the focus really is on nutrition--not on fun.Anyone can take a bag of marshmallows and make something taste good. What kid isn't going to eat Trix if you give it to him?

Sorry to say, I am not impressed. What I was looking for was solid information on what foods really are the BEST for brain function, not recipes that make healthy foods unhealthy.I am sending the book back for a refund.I have found more useful information surfing the internet. There are many other books out there that do a much better job at overall nutrition.Food for Tots and Superfoods for Super Kids are a few I can think of off-hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, especially in today's age of rampant child obesity and media glorification of unhealthy foods.
Brain Food: Recipes for Success in School, Sports, and Life is more than a cookbook - it's a guide for parents to helping kids eat balanced diets of good nutrition. A blend of solid parenting advice and the latest nutritional science, Brain Food offers guidelines for preparing food for children of all ages, what attitudes to expect children to have toward food and how to instill healthy eating habits, recommended recipes for all three meals and sample meal plans, and much more. The suggested recipes include delicacies ranging from "Cereal Trail Mix" to "Cheese Spinach Noodles", "Barbecue Turkey Sloppy Joes", and "Peanut Ginger Pasta Salad." Each recipe also lists its prep time, and basic nutrition information concerning calories, fat calories, and percentages of fat, protein, and carbohydrates per serving. Highly recommended, especially in today's age of rampant child obesity and media glorification of unhealthy foods. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Zombies Are Playing Soccer Now?
This book is an early series of chapter books. They are high interest and good for getting young readers into chapter books.I teach ESOL students and I think the kids will enjoy this series.

3-0 out of 5 stars the zombie game

I recommend this book Zombies Don't Play Soccer because it is funny because the carters tell rally funny jokes. It felt like I was in this book when I reed it. The carters in this book where believablebecause theysaid stuff that us humans would say in real life like nock that off, be quite , and they made excuses like I did not do it, it was his fault, my dog ate my home work.
I think the theme made this book a good book because the kids in this story thought they made the zombiebut they didn'tso they tried to change the zombie to a real person again they tried every thins but it didn't work. They also touted them self's how to play soccer and they won their first game.
The carters made this book a good book because they hade a big since of humor cause they told funny jokes. They where believable because they did stuff that we would do like be happy at the end of the School. And be made at school work.
The setting was so good I felt like I was there and the things they did I could never teach my self scorer and tack on a zombies. It took place at a soccer field. It was a fun but bad setting.
I recommend this book to people that like to read about Zombies. It is an easy book to read. You can learn more about soccer while still getting a good story at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zombies!
There are some weird grownups in Bailey City. But Could the new soccer coach really be a zombie haunting the soccer feild? The Bailey School Kids Are going To Find Out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange soccer happenings
Very strange things happen to the kids of Bailey Elementary School. If it's not weird enough to have a VAMPIRE for a teacher, then what about having a ZOMBIE for a soccer coach??

In this 15th installment of the Bailey School Kids series, the gang is gearing up for a soccer tournament against their ol' school rivals.Like other sports they play, the Bailey kids just aren't doing well at all. That is, until Coach Graves shows up and puts `em through the motions!!

Coach Graves has that combination of motivation, organization and sheer power that all fine teams have.Though she drills them through some tough practices, has them exercise until the gang thinks their legs will fall off and the whole team shows up for practice reeking of muscle-relaxant cream, with her as the coach, the Bailey team might have a fighting chance!!

That is, until one day when a mysterious old woman comes to practice, gets into a heated argument with Coach, and suddenly the Coach Graves, who has always been in constant motion, just sits on the bench staring out into space.Good grief!Has Coach been turned into a ZOMBIE?!

I've reviewed a number of the Bailey Kids books, and believe them to be good choices for intermediate readers. They're short, the language is easy, the type is large and easy to read (I'd say about 14-16 point), and the plot is logical and flows. As a teacher, I often use these books to hook in reluctant readers who don't normally read for pleasure, but who also might be too spooked by the Goosebumps series by Stine.

As of this writing, there are some 40 books to the series, each involving some mysterious creature, anything from vampires to aliens to mermaids. It isn't necessary to read the series in order, though some characters make repeat appearances in other books.A lot of books in the series can be holiday-based, like "Cupid Doesn't Flip Hamburgers" or "Santa Claus Doesn't Mop Floors".Most have a gentle blend of silliness and creepiness that is engaging without being terrifying. It's a fun series, and I've found myself reading almost ALL of them, even when I'm not using them to teach with! So, get yourself a few and follow along with the gang's adventures!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Analysis of Sports Excess in Contemporary Society
I came across this book long ago while studying criminal tendencies among student and professional athletes. This is an excellent book that examines the purpose and effect of organized school sports on children and young adults from the elementary to college level. The old addage that "sports builds character" is strongly challenged here as myth after myth regarding the beneficial aspects of school sports is exploded by the authors. In the post-Columbine era, when the detrimental aspects of obsessive sports culture have been finally pushed into the spotlight, these issues regarding athletics and sports-guided adolescent development are more relevant than ever. The authors show that while sports do provide a basic outlet for physical education, the idea that sports build leaders and create better students is shown to be false. In fact, they show that what results are students who tend to be more violent and have a warped sense of morality as a result of so-called "game reasoning" indoctrination.Organized school sports also encourage standardization, conformity, and an unquestioning submissiveness to authority, while denegrating individuality, creativity, self-expression, and academic acheievement. They tend to reward violence and punish weakness. The result is that in high schools today we find athletes who have an over-developed sense of superiority and arrogance that manifests itself as violence and intimidation against those peers viewed as weaker, whether it's a nerdy bookworm or a young coed who says "no".These are issues that have been ignored for far too long and this book addresses them well. The "boys will be boys" mentality must end. As others have already said, it should be required reading by high school teachers, coaches, and students to get a better understanding of the many problems that face kids today and how school sports contibute more to the problem rather than the solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars These lessons should be learned by parents and coaches
An excellent book that "pulls no punches," to use a sporting phrase. It has been known among those who study youth sports that especially among high school male athletes, excessive alcohol use and deviant behavior (fights, unprotected sex, etc.) have been present to a greater extent than among those not invovled in sport.Miracle and Rees clearly describe the genesis of the myth that sport builds character, and how it has been propogated by those who just want to believe. They clearly point out the problems that can occur, based on research.Competitive sport is not the same as exercise or physical education, activities that promotes health. The next time you read about coaches brawling over a youth hockey game, or parents attacking umpires after a "bad call," you might want to read Lessons of the Locker Room.It will explain to you why this is so.A must read for all parents of children who participate in sport and their coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports--Build Character or Tear it Down?
Lessons of the Locker Room

Sports build character. At least, that's what we've always heard. Why else would our schools invest so much time, effort, and money in student athletics?Andrew W. Miracle, Jr. and C. Roger Rees aren't so sure.

Historically, sports were introduced to public schools to attract students who would otherwise attend private schools. After public schools became the norm, as they are today, sports continued to be valued as an opportunity for community involvement and positive publicity for schools.

The authors suggest that sports serve other, less obvious purposes as well.Sports encourage conformity by requiring players to act as group. Sports may also promote submissiveness, in that players do as they are told, taking orders rather than making their own decisions.Sports also increase the authority of those in charge. They are the experts, and credit or blame for success or failure goes to coaches as much as or more than to players.

Researchshows that, while many athletes have more positive attitudes towards school than other students, they also have decreased independence and self-control.So, what is touted as an opportunity for individual achievement may actually produce better followers than leaders.

Morality and sports is an issue as well. "Game reasoning" refers to a sense of right and wrong that changes according to the situation and a belief that the winner is morally superior to the loser. In some cases, game reasoning seems to flow over into everyday life.

Rees and Miracle propose that game reasoning accounts for many incidents of violence among athletes.Tests of moral reasoning of athletes show a willingness to believe that aggressive behavior is okay in any situation, if it serves the purpose at hand. What begins as a friendly rivalry can degenerate into violence if it is not checked by that slippery value called sportsmanship.

Miracle and Rees, while definitely on the side of classroom education over sports, present a fair assessment of school sports, presenting benefits as well as problems, and raising some interesting questions. The conclusion?Sports do not build character, they reveal it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Depressed hero stops at nothing
Gene Hawkins sleeps with a Luger under his pillow and lives four flights up so people will be short of breath when they get to him. He has a dangerous profession that he refers to as anti-infiltration: interfering with the planting of spies in certain government offices and research labs.

He never minds taking chances, because he's clinically depressed anyway. If he dies on the job, he figures it'll save him the bother of shooting himself one of thesedays.

He's just the man for an impossible assignment, and his boss hands him one: find Chrysalis, a stallion worth £500,000 that just went missing. The owner lost another horse in similar circumstances five years ago, and this time he wants a no-holds-barred search. Insurance investigators and policemen don't get results.

Gene's hunt takes him across the ocean to a Kentucky stud farm, a Wyoming dude ranch and an eerie Arizona dessert. Although lonely and miserable, Gene has a wry sense of humor that keeps his depression from being a burden on the people he meets. He attracts friends and stirs up women, especially the ones he doesn't dare sleep with.

Blood Sport is another great adventure from one of my favorite writers. I turn to Dick Francis whenever I want a sure thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars top notch author

5-0 out of 5 stars Missing Horses
BLOOD SPORT is an early (1967) Francis novel that is very different from his normal fare and hence an excellent read. His hero has a death wish hanging on the edge of suicide. Second the story takes places in the United States.
Missing horses, one for ten years Brings Gene Hawkins on the search as he must take a three week vacation, while he has been depending on his employment to keep himself alive. His search leads from London to New York to Kentucky to Las Vegas and to California where he confronts murder. His mental attitude changes when he knows he maybe the next victim instead of self-destructing--then living becomes important.
Not for every fans who expect a standard protagonist, we found the change a very good read.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take a trip back to the '60's
This is early (1967) Francis novel centers on Gene Hawkins, a deeply depressed young man who finds himself swept into the racing world against his will.Expensive British stallions are disappearing in America and Hawkins agrees to look into the matter for the insurance company as a favor, and to use up the three weeks of vacation time he had been dreading. The investigation leads Hawkins through the US, from the lush horse country of Kentucky, to a Wyoming dude ranch, to the sun kissed beaches of Southern California.Along the way his path crosses many interesting characters including the charming young daughter of his boss.

As always with a Francis novel the action takes place in the racing world, the hero has a tragic flaw but finds redemption on his quest. The action sequences test the hero's skills, luck and fortitude but his success is a foregone conclusion. The appeal of these novels is that Francis can devise so many variations on the theme.

BLOOD SPORT does show it's age though. In the forty years since it's publication DNA testing would have eliminated the problem with much less trouble, Hawkins' depression would have been managed with drugs and the alcoholic secondary character would have long since been sent to rehab.Still this is a classic Francis and a totally enjoyable trip back to the sixties.
