5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and fairly complete
This book is well-written and decently researched. It doesn't "dumb down" the subject for kids, it's written clearly and directly, and is decently illustrated. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to stamp collecting
Janet Klug is the Past President of the American Philatelic Society; its journal (a subscription includes membership) is the American Philatelist. She has written an excellent overview guiding a beginner through the steps of starting a stamp collection.

She writes: "[I]t includes proper care and handling of stamps, locating stamps for a collection, using the tools of a stamp collector, and deriving maximum enjoyment from a stamp collection." As a collector for over 50 years, I give her the highest marks for achieving her objectives.

There are too many excellent suggestions to summarize in this Review, but a couple will give a flavor of her writing.

"Myth: Stamp collectors are nerdy and obsessive about their collections.

"Truth: Most collectors of anything are somewhat obsessive. Collecting is a passion. Stamp collectors are not any different in that regard.... Rock 'n' roll singer/song-writer and former Beatle John Lennon collected stamps in his youth." Klug illustrates the cover page of Lennon's album; he drew beards and mustaches on Queen Victoria and King George VI.

Klug argues that stamp collectors must form a collection of books as their collection grows. She recommends Fundamentals of Philately by L. N. Williams on the technical elements of stamps, for example. As your interests narrow, you will want to purchase additional reosurces; a collector of women on stamps will want a copy of Women on United States Postage Stamps by Anita Price Davis, for example.

Klug worked closely with the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in creating her book; the Lennon album was acquired by the Smithsonian in 2005. It is well worth exploring the website of the Smithsonian or the American Philatelic Society if you have any further interest. Klug's book is beautifully printed on heavy stock with clear illustrations and an attractive format which could serve as a model for arranging your stamps on an album page in an attractive manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!
This is a good stamp book for my son (7 y.o)who likes get systematization of everything what he looks; the interesting activity: many stamps inside which can organize and study the history.., etc. My son is really enjoying !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great project for kids!
Stamp collecting is a fun family activity, and this binder is a great way to start! The seller provided lots of unique and foreign stamps to get us started. And the book is full of creative activites for the stamps you collect. It's a great way to make geography meaningful to your children.Try it - you'll like it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids Just Starting Out
This particular book is great for kids just starting out stamp collecting. We used an inexpensive collection of used stamps to work on it that we purchased for under $5.00 off ebay to practice putting them into the different categories. It has places for you to collect stamps to tell about yourself (i.e. what your favorate color, flower, sport, etc.) and a family tree where you attempt to collect stamps from the birth places of your relatives which seems pretty fun, but a little challenging. For the price I thought it was a great way to get my little boy (8) into stamp collecting and gain a little knowledge of it.Would recommend for any child.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I have been collecting stamps for a couple of years but I still learned many new things from this book such as all the different ways stamps are hinged. There is also a lot about the history of stamps. There are nocolored pictures in this book, but the black and white photos are enough. The reason I read this book was because I wanted to know more about stampcollecting. This book gave me MORE than enough information, but it was notoverwhelming.I think this would be great for beginners because you don'tneed to read every word in the book to understand stamps.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This is the best stamp collecting book I ever read. It tells me a lot about stamps that I never knew before. Also it tells you where you can get stamps. The best thing about this book is that it told me how to get stampsoff an envelope. It is also a great book because it tells about how toidentify fake stamps. A reprint of the classic book written by Edward J. Nankivell, a member of the Institute of Journalists in London and an avid stamp collector. He wrote this book to promote the virtues of stamp collecting as a healthy recreation for everyone from the Price of Wales to ordinary school children. It was originally published in 1902.The timelessness of his lively arguments is apparent by their validity today. This book presents a fascinating and charming look at early stamp collecting. Its very readable narrative also provides a delightful glimpse into the wider world of pre-World War I England. The original book included a substantial section offering stamps and stamp collecting equipment from the original publisher. That section, as well as other illustrations, has been reproduced here and offers a unique look at the stamp collecting world of yesterday.Completely reformatted and typeset for readability. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Stamp of Approval
I wanted to introduce my son to stamp collecting so I picked up this book. I am very pleased that I did. The 900 color images really captures the beauty and excitement of the hobby. My son really enjoys it. Me too. Author Maurice Wozniak has a long and respected career in the hobby, but more important to me: he's a solid and easy-to-read author. Mr. Wozniak, I discovered, also has a highly respected background in jouralism, having served as an editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It shows. His writing and organizational skills are top shelf. This is an infomative and beautiful little book, well worth the money I spent on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures, but inadequate as a guide for collectors
This is not a book for a serious stamp collector, or even a serious beginner. It does have great color pictures, a very basic introduction about how to find stamps, a chronological listing of when the stamps were issued, and a price guide. So why did I give it only 2 stars?Because, aside from the pictures, it's really not much of a resource and gives no hint about where to find more detailed information.

The standard reference for collectors of US stamps is the "Scott Specialized Catalog," which is revised and reissued every year. It's a pretty hefty tome and it's price reflects that. But it is THE authoritative catalog for United States stamps. It gives each stamp a number, and virtually all serious US stamp collectors use those numbers in buying and selling stamps.

Scott also smaller pocket catalog catalog of US stamps. This has far more information than the Warman's "Field Guide" and uses the Scott numbers. It's a far more versatile and universally accepted source than the Warman's guide.

If you're really interested in collecting United States and want a basic, inexpensive guide, go with the Scott pocket catalog, not this one. You'll get more for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!! A Pocket Guide on Stamps!!
Warman's U.S. Stamps Field Guide is the essential guide you need to assess your stamp collection, whether you are an expert or just starting out. This little guide covers almost every stamp from the beginning (1847) through 2008. It also includes airmail postage from 1918-2007. There are also over 900 beautiful, full-color photos that help enhance the look and feel of this pocket guide. The advice on what to collect, how to collect, and where to find stamps is very helpful if you're a beginner. Featured are stories about the first stamps, the 2-cent reds, the Elvis stamp, and the "upside down" Jenny to name a few. Its ease of use and convenient size make it the perfect carry-along guide to flea markets, stamp shows, auctions, and estate sales. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice in clear style.
But where is there an informative explanation of the story behind each stamp? The stories would be very educational for every collector about American history and culture. Each stamp is an honor to its pictured subject---a story made more easy to visualize, remember and study as deeply as one's curiosity selects.

3-0 out of 5 stars STAMP COLLECTING FOR DUMMIES
HAVNT READ THE ENTIRE BOOK YET-BUT I WAS LOOKING FOR HOW TO SELL STAMPS AND HOW MUCH THEY WERE WORTH-SINCE I HAVE OVER 10'000 STAMPS THIS IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM-OTHERWISE THE BOOK IS OK-BUT IT ISNT VERY GOOD FOR PRICING OR SELLING

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice tips but
When you are American and want to start a collection of American stamps, this is the book for you.
The book contains some really nice tips e.g. how to set up a reference collection. However, I would have like to see some more technical stuff e.g. on how to identify watermarks (and especially when its not straightforward). It also is a pity that the author spends a lot of time on American stamps (and I am not American :) ), askPhil and the fact that you can also start a thematic collection. In so many pages the author could and should have covered a lot more ground.
So definitely not a book for intermediate level collectors or people interested in the world outside the USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars written with a light touch
This volume in the 'Dummies' series is written with a humorous light touch that makes it especially attractive to the Dummy who knows he is one and doesn't need to be reminded that he is one by being frog-marched through impenetrable jargon. In addition, Richard Sine or his editor have had the foresight to break the topics he treats up into very small sections and subsections.

The result is a light-hearted but content-rich introduction to the topic, one that this reviewer is only beginning to explore.

I cannot imagine a more effective starting point for the would-be stamp collector or - like me - the person who needs to know before he invests time and treasure whether this is something he's going to be able to manage.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point
I have always thought the Dummies series of books were some of the best-written "How To" books on the market. This one lives up to that reputation.

Mr. Sine has produced a well-written, clear guidebook for both new and experienced collectors. He manages to cover the subject without getting bogged down in the jargon of the hobby. His style and wit are welcome in a hobby whose literature can at times be very dry.

This is a good guide to a great hobby. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
If you are looking for basic info. for starting a stamp collection this book has it & more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now for the bad news
I recently inherited my father in law's stamp collection. My wife wants to sell it, to raise some much-needed money.I bought a current Scott catalogue and determined that one of the U.S. plate block albums is "worth" $350.My wife was told by a stamp dealer that he will only pay about 10% of catalogue value. That would make the album worth $35.

I read Top Dollar Paid.It says that only certain stamps are good investments. Those are the stamps that were already rare and highly priced collectibles when they were first purchased.

In other words, if you go into a stamp dealer and buy a 3 cent stamp for $500 because it is rare, that is exactly the kind of stamp that is a great investment. It is the type of stamp you can leave to your children or grandchildren, and its value will rise as the years and decades go by.

But if, when your father or grandfather was a child in the 1930s or 1940s, or (God forbid) in the 1950s or 60s, he went into the post office and bought mint stamps, plate blocks, or sheets, and had a beautiful and complete collection, all of those old and pretty stamps are worthless. If all you want is the cash for them, use them for postage. They aren't worth a damn thing. If you bought a hot dog in 1963 you wouldn't expect to sell it for $50 today would you?

There are interesting anecdotes in this book. There's the Hungarian boy who hoped to sell Hungarian stamps in the U.S. at a profit.(No way!)There's the author's meeting with Gerald Ford and his stamp collection. There are stories of stamp collection owners who try all the tricks that you yourself would have thought to try, and just where those tricks got them.

I'm glad I read the book. Now I think I'll just add some of my father in law's stamps to my own collection. After reading this book, I would guess that the collection I inherited might sell for $100.Big deal.

The moral of the story is .... your stamps aren't worth a thing. This is the worst investment there is.Put your money under your pillow and you'll be better off.

Before reading this book, I figured that stamp dealers will generally low-ball you and buy your valuable collection for peanuts unless you know the value of it yourself. After reading this book I understand that stamp dealers have incentive to tell you what your collection is really worth to them, and make a fair offer, but it's going to be a small fraction of what you expect, because stamps are a God-awful investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on an uneasy subject for collectors
This book does two things well:

1) How Stamp dealers go about determing how much a collection is worth.

2) Keeps you entertained by showing the human qualities of both the dealers and the sellers. The latter are usually the heirs of the collector. They are almost always non-collectors and have some very interesting misconceptions.

It is funny and sad to see the reviews complaining they wanted the book to tell them how much their collection is worth. Mr. Dalz repeatedly tells you exactly how much a collection is worth. It's worth what the dealer can pay for it.You need an appraisal by someone who knows both stamps and the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book can save you money
I'm not planning to sell my stamps - but this book has saved me money by giving me some insight into what kind of stamps will never be worth the time or money spent on them!I also love Datz's vignettes of life in the stamp trade!

1-0 out of 5 stars More about stamps
Funny anecdotes, but where is the beef?Undoubtedlythis writer is anauthority on stamps, but very littleof that knowledge emerges in thebook. The title thereforeis misleading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer for the stamp "investor."
This book has some great information on the economics of stamp collecting and its past. The "boom" of the 70's probably won't happen in philately again, but many stamps can make worthwhile long-term investments. Basically investment grade stamps pre-date the 1920's. Issues since then (with a few exceptions) have been so mass produced as to be worth little more than face value (ie. commemoratives). Again, this is a good primer for the person seriously wanting to spend some money on good, classic stamps, and hold them for some time. From there you'll just have to take time to learn about specific stamps - and you're on your own there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stamp Investing
This book would be of some use to the stamp collector, but it would be most appreciated by the stamp collector who is going to invest hundreds, or more dollars on stamps. Includes information about economics, strategies, opportunities, buying and selling, scams, condition, grading, and more.

It does not tell you what stamps to invest in, or what particular stamps are worth, it tells you the best ways of finding and buying the stamps you want to invest in, without getting taken. At the same time it teaches you how to look for and purchase rarer stamps that may get overlooked by sellers. Even the pros make mistakes and you can profit from those mistakes.

If you are a stamp dealer, you already know most, if not everything in the book. If you are a part time collector who is thinking of spending some real money on stamps, you need a book like this before you buy anything. If you don't know anything about stamps and have never been interested in collecting them, don't invest in them, or this book, stamp investing is not for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Look at Investing in Stamps
Stephen Datz has written a very helpful guide for the beginning stamp investor. His honest and unvarnished evaluation of where the stamp market has been, and keen insights into the economics of stamps, makes for goodreading.Even if you are a stamp collector who does not want to try tomake a profit from investing in stamps, you'll enjoy this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating!
I'm a relatively new stamp collector, and came across a reference to this book in a stamp magazine...as a book that would intrigue a youngster.Trust me, it is beautifully published and quite charming, even for an adult! The color reproductions of each stamp are gorgeous!I went one step further, and decided to acquire each of the stamps that are depicted in the book. What fun!I have almost completed my search, but as most stamp collectors will tell you, a lot of the fun IS the search!I highly recommend this as a gift book for anyone young or young-at-heart to introduce them to the magic of stamps!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whata'fun'Geographylesson !
Ten-year-old Leslie tells her story of living in Paris for a year, illustrating this appealing odyssey with postage stamps. Her mother, father and 'baby' brother Michael and all of Paris play important roles. Her father introduces her to collecting stamps & they visit the famous stamp market, and become acquainted with several stamp sellers - - their carefully gloved hands and often gruff manners.

For Leslie it is a year of new sights & friendships, of a newly acquired language, and stamps chosen for the album that will bulge with special memories when she returns to the States. Young readers will share the excitement of this adventure, and maybe even feel the lure of stamp collecting. What a wealth of French artists are included! Leslie goes to the beach where her school friends swim topless & there is an appropriate painting by Ingres of a shy nude figure - - mirroring how she felt.

Other art is shown in a stamp from "Ceskolovensko" with a handsome magician doing an improbable card trick, a stamp from Monaco with "La Lectrice" . . .even Romanian stamps of radishes & cucumbers! I hope students (including home-schooled) are inspired to adapt their experiences in stories about their own country, state, or particular area of interest: Art, food, bridges, etc.?

McHAIKU has 'graduated' from her stamp-collecting days but enjoyed Leslie's travelogue tremendously, with a good topping of nostalgia. Thank you, Leslie Jonath!

4-0 out of 5 stars An artistic travelogue

Like most Chronicle books, Postmark Paris is an artistic adventure through the boulevards of Paris as described through a series of postage stamps, narrated by a nine-year old girl who navigates the city for the first time. It is a small, tidy book, journal-like entries opposite the postage stamps, each related through a memory or occasion, personalized by a thoughtful girl reflecting on her experiences in Paris. The girl's collection mirrors a world within a world, visiting the usual tourist sites, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Montparnasse, the twisting Seine.

Timbres is the French word for stamps and the girl carefully pastes each one into her orange stamp album with transparent pages, stamps from every country imaginable, all colors and shapes, decorated with fruit, flowers and people. There is even an open-air stamp market off the Champs-Elysses, the vendors eager to share their wares with the neophyte stamp collector.

The family settles in for their year in France, picnicking on balmy days, viewing the Luxumborg Gardens to see tulips and poppies, as well as the gardens of the Tuilleries by the Louve. They snack on fried fish, fritures, on the banks of the Marne River outside of Paris. As the year winds down, the girl bids adieux to her schoolmates, who line up to "pour faire les bisoux- to kiss me goodbye on the cheek."

Later, back home in California, the girl keeps her treasured book of collected stamps on a nearby shelf; whenever she grows nostalgic for those picturesque Parisian days, she turns the pages, reliving her adventures, each memory reflected in the stamp so carefully pasted on the page. This small, colorful selection is the repository for fond memories of a fascinating country, Postmarked Paris. Appropriate for child or adult, this whimsical book will most likely hold the interest of nine and up, the journal entries full of names and French phrases, the writing small and personal, family outings and details of this extraordinary city. The Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting, introduces the collector to the full scope of United States stamps and stamp collecting.Beginning with an introduction to; stampless covers; (letters mailed before the introduction of postage stamps), it then introduces the many stamps issued from their inception with the 1845 Postmasters' Provisionals through the stamps of the early 21st century.Other chapters deal with the host of stamps known to collectors as; back-of-the-book; issues, including stamps issued for air mail, special delivery, U.S. possessions, revenue purposes, and postal stationery. The history of the Postal Service and the various stamp printers, including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is explored.

A section of the Encyclopedia highlights the technological innovations of stamp production, the history of the movement of the mails, markings applied to envelopes, and meters and machine generated postage. While a book about U.S. stamps and stamp collecting, in a larger sense it is a history of American politics, culture, values and technology seen through the prism of the nation's postage stamps and postal service.

Each of the sixty-two chapters employs a similar format, wherein an introductory article is followed by practical tips on collecting; an almanac of chronological dates to orient the reader within each historical era; a selection of quotes, both contemporaneous and modern, to provide context; examples of postal usage; and a compilation of references to which the reader can turn for more information.

While the Encyclopedia will be welcomed by many advanced stamp collectors, it was written with the beginning collector in mind.It assumes no prior experience with collecting, and includes a comprehensive glossary of philatelic terms. The full color, hard-bound, 730 page book is generously illustrated with stamps, covers and related material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on US Stamps I've ever seen.
This is, hands down, the best book on US postage that I've ever seen. I read it from start to finish with great enthusiasm. Sure it could have gone into more detail on some specifics, but all in all, it had a very in depth review of nearly every aspect of US postage as it relates to Stamp Collecting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners and Old-Timers
I purchased this book for my 8-year-old son, who was just starting to collect stamps. He thoroughly enjoyed the book and I read it with him.Even though I have been collecting off and on since 1976, I found this book enjoyable and refreshing. It brought back to mind some of the basics and my son was encouraged when I showed him easier ways to accomplish some of his tasks.Recently, he has decided to wait until he is little older to collect stamps because he is not organized enough to give the hobby the time and commitment required. He is helping me keep my collection up to date instead, mostly because I collect mint never hinged (MNH) stamps and he was collecting used stamps. He thinks my collection looks better than his.But I have been getting him some MNH stamps and putting them to the side for the future. This book is very factual and entertaining to read.It is not a dry or boring textbook type of read.Everyone who is a stamp collector or philatelist should have this book in their reference library, young or old, beginner or mature collector.Enjoy the read!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference despite age of book
For a book originally written more than 50 years ago, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting has aged well. Broken down into five sections--introduction to stamp collecting, postal history and cover collecting, miscellaneous subjects, technical matters, and classification and identification--the book offers specific tips on starting a collection, properly handling and storing stamps, and choosing areas of specialization.

Although lacking information on recent developments, such as the widespread use of self-adhesives, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting provides invaluable information on paper types and printing and perforation methods used on stamps issued before 1960.

This book is not heavily specialized, but rather intended as an overview of stamp collecting and related matters. Helpful for the beginning philatelist, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting is also a useful reference for more advanced collectors. ... Read more
