Product Description
Immigrants' voyages to a new land have been among the most exciting and noble of human endeavours. It is the amazing courage to flee oppression, to leave behind everything that is familiar, and to chance the hostility of a completely alien culture in order to find freedom, opportunity, and a better life. Immigrants often face difficulty adjusting to their new home in a new country for many reasons, including coping with trauma experienced in their native country, overcoming cultural and language barriers, and encountering discrimination. This can lead to severe and long-lasting psychological and behavioural problems, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and a high risk for suicide. ... Read more

Product Description
This book was written to shine a spotlight on what no one wants to talk about or admit that simply going to work can be a danger to your psychological and physical health, and that not enough managers are effectively confronting this important issue. This book provides concrete information that employees and managers can use to create positive change in their organizations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elephant in the Room
If only the EAP service I contacted had the knowledge shared by Patricia Spindel, they might have been able to help. If only my Psychotherapist had read this book. If only the HR Director I contacted for help had been aware of the seriousness of the issue I brought forth. From someone who has been on the receiving end of psychological harassment, but who had no name for it, this book brought about much needed vindication and a sense of closure. After reading this book, I now know I'm not alone. The elephant in the room will no longer be ignored. This book should be on the shelf of every corporate manager, every HR Manager, every insurance company who deals with corporate disabilities, every psychotherapist, every coach who deals with professionals, every lawyer who deals with labour laws, and many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Targets of Psychological Abuse at Work
Patricia Spindel, Ed.D. defines psychological warfare, explains who perpetuates this type of harassment, who the targets are, possible reasons for, and offers practical advice for counteracting the problems related to this type of workplace abuse.

This book should be mandatory reading for every employee, manager or director of any organization who wants to understand and solve this very real, but little talked about problem. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks workplace conflicts are just personality problems.

Bullies hurt an employer's bottom line through lost productivity, absenteeism, lack of teamwork, etc. and some of them need to be made aware of the pain they inflict and taught a better way to handle employees and/or conduct business...and some are not worth keeping around due to the intentionally malicious harm they cause and their utter lack of concern for the well-being of others. If management honestly cares enough to protect their employees from abuse, wants to maintain a good/healthy morale (aka higher productivity), and hopes to retain their best employees, they will take what is in this book to heart and implement the suggested policies, procedures, and remedies to eliminate psychological abuse in the workplace. Nobody goes to work to be abused! ... Read more

Product Description
Psychoneuroimmunology has emerged as a discipline advancing our knowledge of the relationships among psychosocial factors, the central nervous system, the immune system, and disease. The growing volume of evidence suggests that psychological states, including exposure to stressors and the presence of depressive states, may influence health and disease by altering immunologic states.

Psychoneuroimmunology, a collaborative work of 50 international experts, expands on the American Psychiatric Association’s symposium on this topic to present never-before-compiled scientific research from this evolving field. Maintaining a clinical focus, this book illustrates clinical effects by examining relevant research studies and models including

  • Psychoneuroimmunological factors involved in specific illnesses such as cervical cancer, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS
  • The role psychoneuroimmunology plays in carcinogenesis and the progression of established tumors, as well as findings on the progression of cancer that have general clinical relevance
  • The effects of specific psychotropic medications; the effects of life stressors, bereavement, and and social support; the response to those stressors; and stress management and psychosocial predictors of disease
  • The impacts of gender-specific factors, diurnal variation, and behavioral genetics on the immune function
  • The Stressor-Support-Coping model, which integrates existing psychoneuroimmunology findings and lays the groundwork for use in support group intervention

This book is a first step toward organizing psychoneuroimmunology findings into coherent theoretical models and concludes with a look at future clinical applications. Complete with charts, references, and a detailed index, it is the most comprehensive source on psychoneuroimmunology. ... Read more

Product Description
When asked mental health nurses consistently reportrelatively high levels of occupational stress. Theselevels of occupational stress are seen as affectingstaff retention and also as creating a barrier tothe ongoing programme of improvement in mentalhealth care. Research suggests that the 'criticalfactors' in nurses' ability to cope withoccupational stress are the personality variablesthat are considered to have consistency over theindividual's biographical history and which arecommonly described as dispositions or traits.Previous research has argued that the limitsimplicit in the dominant approach to studying thisarea (self-report questionnaires) are nowrestricting understanding of these personalityvariables and there has been repeated calls forstudies to use more sophisticated methods. Thisstudy has used a specific method of biographicalinterviewing to explore the experiences of stress ofnurses in two contrasting settings: an acute wardand a therapeutic community, to explore how personalbiography impacts upon the experience of ccupationalstress for these two groups. ... Description:
Two hundred and nine pupils were randomly allocated to either a cognitive behaviourally based stress management intervention (SMI) group, or a non-intervention control group. Mood and motivation measures were administered pre and post intervention. Standardized examinations were taken 8-10 weeks later. As hypothesized, results indicated that an increase in the functionality of pupils' cognitions served as the mechanism by which mental health improved in the SMI group. In contrast, the control group demonstrated no such improvements. Also, as predicted, an increase in motivation accounted for the SMI group's significantly better performance on the standardized, academic assessments that comprise the United Kingdom's General Certificate of Secondary Education. Indeed, the magnitude of this enhanced performance was, on average, one-letter grade. Discussion focuses on the theoretical and practical implications of these findings. ... Read more

From the supplier: A survey of 235 Canadian respondents to find out the differences between self-employed and salaried individuals confirms results of previous research on job satisfaction and stress. Survey results show that the self-employed are more stressed out but benefit from the greater amount of free time to indulge in their hobbies and join voluntary organizations. Furthermore, the self-employed expressed a greater sense of job fulfillment.
