The printed course of study for the elementary schools to be found
in June, 1915, the time the facts were gathered for this report, was
prepared under a former administration. While its main outlines were
still held to, it was being departed from in individual schools in
many respects. Except occasionally it was not possible to find record
of such departures. It was believed that to accept the printed manual
as representing current procedure would do frequent injustice to
thoughtful, constructive workers within the system. But it must be
remembered that courses of study for the city cover the work of twelve
school years in a score and more of subjects, distributed through a
hundred buildings. Only a small fraction of this comprehensive program
is going on during any week of the school year; and of this fraction
only a relatively small amount could actually be visited by one man in
the time possible to devote to the task. In the absence of records of
work done or of work projected, unduly large weight had to be given to
the recommendations set down in the latest published course of study
manual. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A really useful tool for teaching map concepts!
In a word--Wow!

As a school librarian, I look for good, practical, teaching items to place in the Professional Library for teacher check-out only. This workbook, "25 Map Crosswords: Ready-to-go Reproducible Maps with Crossword Puzzles to Teach Key Geography Skills and Build Content-Area Vocabulary," is an astonishing source to teach all kinds of map skills--you know the kind--on all those high-stakes tests!

Frankly, if I were a classroom teacher, I would buy my own copy to avoid potential absence of the book when needed (potential absence=already checked out). However, I know that some teachers cannot afford such expenses, so I try to help through the library. The maps go beyond what you might imagine. They afford practical, real-world experience, plus that pre-testing advantage. When I taught English at the high school level, English teachers were responsible for teaching how to read graphs and charts. Some of these "maps" fall into those categories.

Let's examine a couple:
(Note: I bought my copy based on a vague description. I want to give readers more precise information. Why? Because this workbook is worth every penny--and more!!)
(The 25 maps are arranged in an increasingly higher level of thinking.)

Example 1: (the first one) It is called "Highways" with the map set in Arizona. The introductory note tells the student that "Highway maps don't just show where roads lead to. They also show the different types of maps...."
A sample question: "Routes 80 and 10 come together in which town?" This answer goes in Down 13. In addition to the map and crossword, each item is set on two pages and always contains at least one block of factoids. "Highways: Arizona" has this: Today there are more than 42,000 miles of interstate highways....The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 authorized construction of the interstate highway system." I'm glad to know students will learn that!

Example 2: "Religions: World", pp. 32-33. Introductory note: "This map shows the major religions of the world....useful for learning the culture of a place." The factoid block tells the reader that Christianity has two billion followers, while Islam has one billion. A sample question: "This continent has more different religions than any other" (Across 14).

Other examples include Growth of Railroads: Europe, Products: Montana, Precipitation: Africa, City Map: London, Physical: Antarctica, Comparing maps: Baseball teams, 1952 to 1995, Subway: Washington, D.C., Metro, and Population Cartogram: World.

As you can see, these examples cover a wide range and variety of topics. What a teaching tool each one is!!

To whom do I recommend this workbook? To all teachers, both elementary and high school, of social studies and English/Reading. It is labeled for ages 9-12, but it would be quite effective in the general high school geography, English, and history classes. As the social studies teacher in my school noted, "You cannot teach the whys and wherefores of maps too many times."

Three last words: Buy this now! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book !
I just rated Kaplan's GMAT book but I feel I need to chime in regarding Arco...because that book was very helpful !

I'm not a native speaker of English and have never taken a standardized test before in my life; yet I scored a 770 (99 percentile) on the GMAT in my first try 3 days ago.

I started out with Arco's 24-hour course. Arco's book is great, and it has quite a bit more stuff on the math and verbal part than Kaplan has. I didn't get the CD rom though since I got an older edition, so I can't rate the software. But the book itself is excellent.

Arco has a lot of useful info on both the math and verbal sections. There are a lot of relevant problems in the book, and their style comes close to the real thing. The book is well written with lots of useful advice. There a very few mistakes and printing errors in the book.

After Arco I went on to tackle the official guide from ETS. Anyone who wants to prepare for the GMAT should work some of the problems in this book. I did them all, but I don't really think that's neccesary -- just do the final third in each section and you'll be fine.

Finally I read the Kaplan book. There was not much in the book that I didn't already know. In fact, Kaplan has much less material than Arco. However, when you start working with Kaplan's CD rom you realize how much info is packed on that disk. There's 18 quizzes with 9 math and 9 verbal and they're all great practice. They actually force you to work *faster* than you'll need for the real test. Also, there are very few errors in the Kaplan material, and their problems come very close to the real ones.

I took the four GMAT CATs on the CD rom and got 700, 780, 660 and 700. There's no question that Kaplan artificially lower your score so you're guaranteed to score higher on the real test, but that's cool as long as it doesn't discourages you. Just know that's the way it is.

I also took the PowerPrep tests, just for practice... but I had already done the problems in the ETS book ! However you definitely should work with PowerPrep to get a sense of the problems and the way they're presented.

Hope this helps. Good luck !!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was excellent
I used this book as the capstone to a self-taught GMAT course. It provided adequate review of the quantitative and verbal concepts on the exam, challenging practice problems, and good answer explanations. The AWAsection was also helpful.

In addition, I used Kaplan's CD and the GMATPowerPrep software, both were also excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Buy for Getting Familiar with the GMAT
I bought this book six weeks in advance of taking the GMAT.This book is great for getting you familiar with the test and showing common testing pitfalls.I felt like I needed the most help with the Verbal section and this book helped me to decipher what the GMAT question was really asking meinstead of what I thought it was asking me. My unofficial results show anOUTSTANDING grade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent....but BEWARE, some errors
I thought that a few of the answers might have been erroneous, and then I confirmed it.There's a few errors in the math section (i.e. pg 109 prob10...x can equal 1 or -1).But other than that, this is a greatbook...quick and thorough...doesn't waste time...review is the best I'veread. It explains how the test is scored better than the other books toowhich I think is vital. If you only have time for one book, use this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD
This is the best i have used so far. The math review is very detailed and by far the best. After going through another book, i learned so much more with this one. What I liked most is that the quick quizzes after eachsection are tougher than the lesson problems. So,they bring you up anotherlevel once you have mastered the lesson. E.g., I am better at sentencecorrection and breezed through those lessons, but got slowed down in thequiz. Each lesson takes ~1 hour, so the 24 hr thing refers to 24 man-hoursof study, not day hours. I spent two weeks on the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It was OK....but proofreading would have helped
I was so glad I didn't buy this book b/c there were errors in it. Not toomany where it would be a book I would never reccommend, but there weremistakes. I am surprised b/c one would think a test prep book would beproof read before it was released. All and all it was a good book and I'mglad I had it to get through the GRE. I gave it only one star b/c it shouldhave been proof read better. Hopefully the next edition will be correct

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't they proofread this book?
I found this review book to be very frustrating. My fiance, who has a finance degree, found many errors with there math examples. The answers to most of the math examples were typos and that made it increasinglyfrustrating. It squeezed too much useless information into each sectionand did not provide enough useful tips on saving time.If one was to buythis book, they better have a bookstore available to look at supplementaryGRE materials. If you are looking for a confidence builder to the GRE,don't search here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just about ok.
Actually it is not a book a guy should buy. Maybe it is just worth borrowing and going through for a week. The exercises are not at all challenging and tend to give a false impression of the GRE as a very easyexam. Also it lacks a good word list. ... Read more

*Using the most commonly used phonics rules to figure out words used most often, which don't need to be memorized, and obtaining a firm knowledge of how to apply those rules to future unknown words.

*developing basic comprehension skills to assure that the reader understands what the words are saying.

Check lists are provided for determining how the student learns best. 5-0 out of 5 stars Literacy
The book arrived on time and in great condition.I am thrilled with it's approach for teaching adults learn to read or to read better.I recommend it highly to anyone who has an opportunity to do this.

4-0 out of 5 stars fun teaching method for phonics
I actually ordered another phonics program ($65) to evaluate alongside this one and ended up returning the other because it was difficult to follow. This book is easy to understand and the story method of presenting phonics rules is fun for the teacher and the student. She makes it clear that this book is a launching pad, which is why I give it 4 stars.I had to get other materials to have enough words to use for practice with my students. The concept of the method is to turn the phonics rules into silly stories that students can easily remember with simple illustrations. For example, "c" is a copy cat who copies the sounds of "s" and "k" under certain conditions.I like to illustrate the phonics rule in my student's primary journal composition book on the top half of the page, and then write down a lot of words that use the rule below the picture. Then I have the student diagram the words and practice reading them.I have some video tutorials on youtube illustrating her method of presenting the phonics rules. My channel is taskwhiz .

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
This is a very good book which can help anyone learn to read. It provides very good guidance for someone who has not tutored reading before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even an Adult Can Learn to Read!
This book has been instrumental in assisting me to teach a 42 year-old to read. The guidelines are concise and allow me flexibility in the design of my reading program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only good for children
I was disappointed with this purchase.I took for 'someone' that it was directed at any age group. However, it is based on very child-based activities which are completely unsuitable for adults.Good for kids but not for anything else. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One kind of puzzle over and over
The puzzles are good but the book offers just one kind with different permutations. You tape a math problem to an answer to build a square. You need to understand that before you buy it. My students liked it. Creating new puzzles absorbed the time and energy of my more advanced students.

From the supplier: Teachers should be aware of the importance of moral and social development among children. These critical aspects in education should be addressed and promoted within the classrom environment. The use of punishments such as 'time out' practices can be used in the formation of moral consciousness by helping children choose between right and wrong. However, such practices are not effective in fostering social development and awareness. It is imperative for teachers to modify the environment to provide social and moral learning through activities such as reading, writing and social interaction.
