5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Got this item as quick as can be and the product in question is exactly what I hoped it would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Note from the Publisher
We're extremely happy that the book has been found to be an excellent resource.

We wanted to clarify why there are two books available on Amazon with two prices. Allyn & Bacon, a Pearson Education Company, is an educational publisher, and as such we publish books with pedagogical tools to be used in college courses. The edition with the sample log line and treatment and sample step outline appendices is for the education market. When we decided to publish an edition for the broader consumer market, titled The Complete Screenwriter's Manual: A Comprehensive Reference of Format and Style, the pedagogical tools were no longer necessary, and thus we could remove them and set the trade edition at a lower price.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource (but buy the other cheaper copy)
Every page of this book -- except two appendices (16 pgs: Sample Log Line and Treatment, and Sample Step Outline) -- is identical to what is found in "the Complete Screenwriter's Manual, another version of this book at $12.32 Amazon ($18.95 retail). That being said, the content that is identical is absolutely excellent. Both works outline in extreme detail how to format all the elements of a screenplay: dialogue, slug lines (scene designations), instructions or action description, parentheticals, and transitions. Copious examples of how to write into a screenplay the following: sound effects, flashbacks, phone conversations, car scenes, foreign languages, dreams, time-shifts, voiceovers, and much more. Also shows common MISTAKES in formatting that mark a script as the work of an amateur. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever
This book has it all.Easy read, easy to follow, and a wealth of information. This is the first writing book I could not put down and now sits on my coffee table.I really appreciate the samples and exercises because as an ESL student, abstract descriptions and definition not always make sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Style
This text is a useful tool for a person trying to understand English style and grammar and how they work. The book even describes some elements of style that have changed over time (for example rules that have been made up or others that are obsolete). I am an English Comp. teacher at a university, and I plan to use this book as a resource in my class; it will help me articulate some of the errors I see frequently in papers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Lessons, but Concise?
This book contains informative lessons on grammar, sentence structure, clarity, concision, etc. The only problem I had with this book is the wordiness of the authors. Sometimes the lessons are extremely repetitive, sure it helps to drill it in your brain, but that's only if you're focused enough to keep reading. If you'd like the lessons in a shorter format, buy Style: The Basics in Clarity and Grace. You get the same lessons without the fluff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for serious writers!
This book is great for SERIOUS writers, be they creative, professional, or student. It goes far beyond comma splices and how to use apostrophes. I consider myself an proficient writer, but this book helped me consider how to to change some of my bad writing habits (yes, even the best of us have them!), and rethink approaches that are "okay" but could be carried out with more "grace," to use Williams' term. I highly recommend it for anyone willing to take the time to understand the science behind how to write clearly and effectively!

5-0 out of 5 stars B.G.
Williams stands out in a crowded field of experts on writing. He delves into more detail than any other expert on the topics of clarity and coherence, providing a systematic approach to diagnosing a piece of writing and correcting its flaws. He even has insights about concepts for which I thought no new insight was possible, such as the concept of topic sentences. While most writing instructors will teach you to use topic sentences and where to place it, Williams goes into extensive detail about what makes a proper topic sentence (what he calls a point sentence)and how it must introduce not only the paragraph's characters and actions, but also the paragraph's themes or concepts. You might uncover the same principles of clear writing if you carefully study several style books, but why work so hard when Williams has distilled and explained the principles already in one book? ... Product Description
Students, teachers, librarians, and researches who use online sources face new questions when writing footnotes or bibliographic entries for their papers and dissertations. On the Internet, sources change, move, and sometimes disappear, yet users must be able to cite informations accurately in order to maintain credibility. In response to the needs of her students and herself, Janice Walker created the Walker/ACW Style Sheet in 1994, posted it on the web, and received an overwhelming response.
The Walker Style Sheet was endorsed by the Alliance for Computers and Writing and was hailed by Newsweek as "a good stop gap." Internet World called it "the most authoritative version" and the "most frequently accessed styleguide on the net," and the Chronicle of Higher Education and USA Today have both cited Walker's work in recent articles.
Now Walker and Taylor have expanded the original style sheet into a comprehensive yet user-friendly guide. In addition to providing rules for citation, they also give complete guidelines for formatting documents for online publication and for electronically preparing texts for print publication.Amazon.com Review
You're preparing the bibliography of your research project, and some of your information came from documents you found on theInternet. How do you cite the Web sites? Scholarly citations ofhard-copy texts such as books, magazines, and journals followlong-established rules, but electronic sources don't often fit neatlyinto standard patterns. Clearly, new guidelines need to be set to keepup with the evolution of the Internet. The Columbia Guide stepsinto the breach with admirable attention to detail as well asdiscussions of purpose and intent to clarify and support its onlinestyle solutions. After revisiting the principles of access, intellectual property, economy, standardization, and clarity thatunderlie the rules of citing sources, Walker and Taylor delve into thenitty-gritty of URLs and login names, signature files and publicationinformation, providing both humanities-style and sciences-styleexamples for each.

With a similarly careful, logical, and scholarly progression, theycover bibliographic formats for the World Wide Web, e-mail, discussionlists, and newsgroups, plus document style (and its logic) whenformatting for print publications, diskettes, and computernetworks. When you work in this virual world, which changes sofrequently and dynamically, where anything seems possible andconventions be damned, it's especially important to standardize andadhere to some rules, a goal greatly advanced by The Columbia Guideto Online Style. --Stephanie Gold ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Wishing it would have more citation styles
The book is pretty good. Its clear and concise--straight to the point.I wish it would contain more of the different styles, but it mainly focuses on two--humanitites style and scientific style (MLA & APA).It would really help students to sort of have all of the styles in one book so we do not have to get like four or five books just because our professor wanted a paper a certain way. This book also focuses on the online citation (most books fall short of the online stuff because it is so new).

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but somewhat redundant.
Citation of materials from the (extremely) volatile web was a major problem. Creating a summary, and providing a hyperlink to the original content, proved a major issue since electronic content moves sofrequently.. The Columbia Guide gives some assurance that proper citationcan be given. Some of the citation style suggestions seem very redundant, and there is no clear table or quick summary to highlight the proper methodfor common usage. Still, as the first work of this type, it gives anexcellent baseline for referencing, building, managing on-line content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CSE Manual ROCKS!
An excellent manual for science writers and editors.Covers everything from general syntax to handling of genetic nomenclature. The 'comma' is a thing of the past.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useless as a reference book; the 6th Edition was better
I bought the 7th edition as soon as it hit the shelves.
I had a well-thumbed copy of the 6th edition, and was eagerly looking forward to the updated 7th.
However, although I am sure that the 7th edition has more up-to-date content in there somewhere, I never use it (that is NEVER). I always go for the 6th edition. Why? Because the index on the 7th edition is so poor as to render it completely useless as a reference.

I am looking forward to an improved 8th edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
This is the 7th edition of the CBE Manual, now renamed as CSE. I'm a science proofreader and typesetter and I must say I'm somewhat disappointed. In only a couple of hours browsing the book I've found a lot of mistakes in the math notation. Examples: 5.2.1.3, 2), missed + after dots; 13.3.1, the last integral has the pi misplaced (a serious problem, as the example is intended to show how indexes are placed); Table 12.11, f(x,y) should be italics, not upright; 12.3.2.1, |z> for the state of a system is wrong, as the character used is 'greater than' an not an angle bracket (which is not mentioned at all); according to 12.2.1.1, 3) space in units (eg, V s) is discouraged and a centered dot is preferred (V·s), but except in this chapter the book uses the space (rightly), etc. The Chicago Manual is much better in math. Now I wonder if the rest of the book has similar mistakes and the information is reliable. Selection of topics is also questionable. Still a valuable reference, but it should be used warily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly Documentation
Everyone who is a scholar or academician must know how to handle various formats of documentation styles. CSE represents one of these, specifically in the field of the natural and physical sciences. Another one is APA published by the American Psychological Association, which is mainly utilized in the social sciences. Finally, in the humanities, especially language, literature and folklore, fine arts, etc., a scholar needs to use the MLA, Moderna Language Association style. By the way, here at Amazon you can get the latest edition of the MLA, 3rd ed., just published in May, 2008. Good luck in your scholarship ///Dr. Serafin Roldan

Don't be misled. This does NOT contain the current edition of The Chicago Manual of Style! This is the 1927 edition of "Manual of Style: Containing Typographical Rules Governing the Publications of the University of Chicago Press together with Specimens of Types Used at the University of Chicago Press." The publisher has misleadingly titled it "The Chicago Manual of Style." The book did not have that title in 1927. The edition on this page is NOT published by the University of Chicago Press. Product Description

Dewey. Bellow. Strauss. Friedman. The University of Chicago has been the home of some of the most important thinkers of the modern age. But perhaps no name has been spoken with more respect than Turabian. The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Her Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, created from her years of experience with research projects across all fields, has sold more than seven million copies since it was first published in 1937.

Now, with this seventh edition, Turabian’s Manual has undergone its most extensive revision, ensuring that it will remain the most valuable handbook for writers at every level—from first-year undergraduates, to dissertation writers apprehensively submitting final manuscripts, to senior scholars who may be old hands at research and writing but less familiar with new media citation styles. Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, and the late Wayne C. Booth—the gifted team behind The Craft of Research—and the University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff combined their wide-ranging expertise to remake this classic resource. They preserve Turabian’s clear and practical advice while fully embracing the new modes of research, writing, and source citation brought about by the age of the Internet.

Booth, Colomb, and Williams significantly expand the scope of previous editions by creating a guide, generous in length and tone, to the art of research and writing. Growing out of the authors’ best-selling Craft of Research, this new section provides students with an overview of every step of the research and writing process, from formulating the right questions to reading critically to building arguments and revising drafts. This leads naturally to the second part of the Manual for Writers, which offers an authoritative overview of citation practices in scholarly writing, as well as detailed information on the two main citation styles (“notes-bibliography” and “author-date”). This section has been fully revised to reflect the recommendations of the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and to present an expanded array of source types and updated examples, including guidance on citing electronic sources.

The final section of the book treats issues of style—the details that go into making a strong paper. Here writers will find advice on a wide range of topics, including punctuation, table formatting, and use of quotations. The appendix draws together everything writers need to know about formatting research papers, theses, and dissertations and preparing them for submission. This material has been thoroughly vetted by dissertation officials at colleges and universities across the country.

This seventh edition of Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations is a classic reference revised for a new age. It is tailored to a new generation of writers using tools its original author could not have imagined—while retaining the clarity and authority that generations of scholars have come to associate with the name Turabian.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent manual!

3-0 out of 5 stars great book that came in poor conditions
This is a great reference book. I'm sad that it came in very poor conditions from amazon. As i needed it for a class, i couldn't spent more time without it returning it. But i would be carefull whenever you see items like this marked as "NEW" as them sometimes come with a slight sign of misuse or travel damage (i.e. a corner bended mark).

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides a good framework
One of the challenges of writing higher academic work is that feeling of 'being thrown in the deep end'.

This is a really good 'life preserver' if you have that feeling !

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, helpful for the researchers
I've got this book for my report and thesis.
My school requires the Turabian format.
This book is very useful for those who writes his report or thesis
in Turabian format.

I have got this book very cheaply.
Though it is a used book, it's almost new book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Confusing...
This book was very, very confusing. I was specifically trying to use it to determine proper style for reports using footnotes without an end bibliography. This book was completely useless. Nowhere to be found is a handy page that shows you how to do so! I found what I thought was the answer, only to find that those were only correct for a bibliography page, not end notes. This book is worthless. Just google Turabian Style Guide. It's much, much easier. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Resource
I first discovered this book when one of my history professors recommended it.Now, I always keep it nearby when I write. It gives directions for writing great papers and contains the latest citation information for theChicago, MLA, and APA styles (different teachers often prefer differentstyles). Also, Slade gives the information in a concise manner (only 297full size pages). Because of this, I highly recommend it for those whowrite research papers frequently, especially college students. Here is achapter summary:

I had to buy this book for my Writing for Chemists in college. It was very expensive when I bought it. I only used it once. The book is not very well organized, and it is difficult to find what you need. I think it is not a good book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful, intelligible
As an English teacher, I am often faced with students who struggle to learn grammar in the abstract but can't seem to apply it to their own writing. For this reason I love this text, which combines clear descriptions and easy to follow examples with a variety of exercises that have the students revising writing rather than simply identifying random words.I have seen a great deal of improvement among my students after teaching some of the lessons, particularly those dealing with tone and coherence. My students, too, prefer this text to our other grammar text and will actually request this one when given the option.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't really like it
This is one of the worst grammar books I've ever dealt with in my life. Not only is it vague in explaining terms, it wastes time defining the terms with this cheesy story line of some kids in a classroom, obviously trying to make the students of the classroom ethnically diverse with names such as "Keron," "Lakesha," and "Hideki." That irritates the hell out of me. I give this book an F, because its sucks, overall. This book talks to you as if you are no more than eleven, then explains the terms in the most confusing way that the terms could ever be explained. F-.

Positives: It helped me get the gist of the terms, but I had to look elsewhere to FULLY understand what the terms mean. That raises the grade to a C-.

5-0 out of 5 stars Style Basics of Clarity and Grace
If you are a college student, graduate student, or a doctoral student this book will be of great value in writing term papers, a thesis, or dissertation. It is also good for term papers, speeches, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Writing Guide
This book helped me to fine tune writing.Being a Department of State employee and considering myself an already excellent writer, I was able to reassess my composition and cut out the unnecessary verbage and get down to the facts in concise sentences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Write better, now
Shorter than many of Williams' other similar works, Style is a great little book that any writer should read many times. His points on concision and clarity are must read for anybody who wants to improve their writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars very clear
I am a non native speaker, and even though my grammar is not too bad, my writing style has always been a source of frustration. At work, when comparing the texts I would write with the one of good native writers, I could see that theirs were better, but could not find why.
I bought this book based on the high reviews it got on amazon, and I was not disappointed. After reading afew pages, I scanned the research proposal I was writing at the time, and could already make significant improvements on it. The advices that the author give are sometimes quite simple, especially at the beginning of the book (for example : the main character should be the subjects of the verbs, which themselves should correspond to the main action). But surprisingly, I realized that I was rarely applying these simple rules of clarity. The author is never dogmatic, and insists that the only thing that matters is that the reader easily understands what we're writing. All throughout the book, numerous examples illustrate the concepts just introduced so that it is quite easy to test whether one has really got the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars a gem
I found an used copy of " The Basics of Clarity and Grace" at bookstore. After reading 3/4 of the book I orderedtwo more copies. One copy for my son who is a journalist major and the other for my eldestson who writes good comedy. I liked its size and its no nonesense approach. ... Read more

Product Description
Style is often the most difficult issue for writers to deal with. Most people feel helpless and confused when asked to improve something they have written. In fact, key secrets to improving style often remain concealed because even the authors who write on style may not be able to explain them clearly.

An ideal text for courses in advanced composition, Understanding Style uncovers some of the inherent mystery of style and explains how to craft good sentences and combine them into writing that is clear and readable. While similar books often fail to address the relationship between written style and spoken voices or to discuss the ways that writers control rhythm and emphasis--precisely the kind of issues that give style its reputation as a difficult topic--this unique book adapts the findings of modern linguistic research into detailed writing advice seldom found elsewhere.

Though it emphasizes the "sound" of the written voice throughout, the text also covers diction, coherence, and sentence variety. Glaser includes numerous open-ended exercises drawn from such areas as business, history, and popular science to encourage students to practice as they learn. Each chapter concludes with a boxed summary for quick reference and a "Your Writing" prompt, asking students to apply these principles directly to their own work.

The book also features a glossary of writing terms, a brief dictionary of usage, a guide to punctuation, and a detailed index.Visitors will find actual exercises from the book, in addition to tips for working with the book and writing in general. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Alert to the features of good English
If you just want to grasp the gist of the book, take a look at the "POINTS TO REMEMBER" at the end of each chapter. I think they are well written for everyone to understand easily.

You would definitely learn a lot if you could digest all the examples and practice all the exercises provided in the book. Even though you couldn't, like me, you can still get concrete ideas about some main features of good English, which can make you more alert to how well, or poor, people are expressing themselves, and also more alert to the way you are expressing yourself. I believe once we are aware of those good features, we can try our best to pick them up and integrate in our writing style.

Nevertheless, it does take patience and basic linguistic knowledge (for those who learn English as a secondary language) to truely appreciate the full content of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stylishly Simple
I'm a mature student of creative writing and have been struggling to improve the quality of my writing, as opposed to my creativity. I came across this book through Amazon and I'm staggered by how valuable it has proved to be.The book is simple in format, there are three sections:"Good and bad writing"; "Choosing accurate, effectivewords"; and "Crafting clear, pleasing and coherentsentences." Each has several chapters in it which provide exercisesand examples that help your prose to work, simply and clearly. This is nota heavyweight grammatical textbook, it is a straightforward workbook thatwill improve anyone's English: employee, student, creative, professional, academic, manager or executive.Joe Glaser has also created a web sitewhere the exercises from the book can be downloaded, plus there are otherlinks etc. to recommended style pages. Writing is important to how wethink, clear writing helps produce creative, effective thinking - this is abook that will actually help your writing, and your communication. ... Read more

Product Description
Why another book on this topic? The author's experience editing leading journals in psychology suggests that publication manuals and books on writing about experimentation in psychology do not adequately address grammatical usage and style. Much of the advice published for scientific writers reads as if it had been written either by English teachers for writers who do not publish in scientific fields, or by scientific writers who think that the information already available in countless handbooks on grammar and style for student writers in English classes is enough. Unfortunately, such traditional handbooks do not offer the particular sorts of commentary that scientific writers need.

This book offers specific advice on a host of issues ranging from the appropriate use of abbreviations to wordiness -- and how to avoid it. Dr. Bellquist's expertise in both the English language and the language of scientific writing ideally positions him to offer guidelines on the use of the passive, the best wording for statistical presentations, and just how to describe experimental procedures, among many other topics. Complete with examples and principles to guide writing decisions, this book will assist both students and seasoned professionals in presenting their work clearly for maximum impact. This book is intended as a guide to grammar and usage for writers in scientific fields -- particularly in experimental psychology and all fields related to experimental psychology. Features of the book include:

* alphabetical entries and numerous cross references on grammar, usage, and style;

* numerous examples taken from scientific papers or based on actual cases;

* discussions of semantic problems of grammar such as modification, predication, and statement;

* and discussions of usage specific to experimental psychology, statistics, and related fields.
