67. In Whose Image?: Political Islam and Urban Practices in Sudan by T. Abdou Maliqalim Simone | |

Editorial Review Product Description Drawing a detailed portrait of political fundamentalism during the 1985-89 period of democratic rule in the Sudan, Simone shows how the Shari'a Movement attempted to shape a viable social order by linking religious integrity and economic development, where religious practice was to dominate all aspects of society and individuals' daily lives. However, because Sudanese society is remarkably diverse ethnically and religiously, this often led to conflict, fragmentation, and violence in the name of Islam. Simone's own Islamic background leads him to deplore the violence and the devastating psychological, economic, and cultural consequences of one form of Islamic radicalism, while holding to hope that a viable form of this inherently political religion can in fact be applied. As a counterpoint, he ends with a discussion of South Africa's Call of Islam, which seeks political unity through a more tolerant interpretation of Islam. As an introduction to religious discourse in Africa, this book will be widely read by students and scholars throughout African Studies, Religious Studies, Anthropology, and Political Science. |

Editorial Review Product Description Natinga is the temporary refuge for about 2,000 boys, ranging in age from 8 to 18, from many different tribes. The camp is protected by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, a group who is engaged in a fierce battle with the Islamic Arab regime that took control of the Sudanese government in 1983. The rebels claim to want to educate the boys for peace and self-government. School supplies are scarce, however, as are basic necessities such as food and medicine. In addition to the war, disease and famine are constant threats. It is unclear whether these boys will ever return to what remains of their family and home again. Meanwhile, their traditional customs and way of life are fast disappearing. Judy Walgren traveled to Natinga and met the boys living there. Here she provides a vivid document of their lives, from the struggle to find sanitary drinking water to the hope of acquiring the knowledge and survival skills that will help them find a new life in their war-ravaged country. Editorial Review Product Description For the former refugees who fled from northern Ethiopia to eastern Sudan to escape war and famine in 1984 and returned to their country of birth in 1993, "coming home" really meant creating a new home out of an empty space. Settling in a new area, establishing social and kin ties, and inventing social practices, returnees gradually invested their environment with meaning and began to consider their settlement home. Hammond outlines the roles that gender and generational differences played in this process and how the residents came to define the symbolic and geographical boundaries of Ada Bai. Drawing on her fieldwork from 1993 to 1995 and regular shorter periods since, Hammond describes the process by which a place is made meaningful through everyday practice and social interaction. This Place Will Become Home provides insight into how people cope with extreme economic hardship, food insecurity, and limited access to international humanitarian or development assistance in their struggle to attain economic self-sufficiency. |
