In the remote foothills of southern Sudan thousands of boys live together in a place called Natinga. They are displaced people. The bitter civil war raging in Sudan has claimed the lives of an estimated 1.5 million people and driven more than 4 million others from their homes. Among them are countless children, many of whom have no home left to return to when and if the conflict is resolved.

Natinga is the temporary refuge for about 2,000 boys, ranging in age from 8 to 18, from many different tribes. The camp is protected by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, a group who is engaged in a fierce battle with the Islamic Arab regime that took control of the Sudanese government in 1983. The rebels claim to want to educate the boys for peace and self-government. School supplies are scarce, however, as are basic necessities such as food and medicine. In addition to the war, disease and famine are constant threats. It is unclear whether these boys will ever return to what remains of their family and home again. Meanwhile, their traditional customs and way of life are fast disappearing.

Judy Walgren traveled to Natinga and met the boys living there. Incredible book!
Not only does author Judy Walgren capture the faces and stories of the young children known as "The Lost Boys of Natinga," but she captures your heart as well.
In a easy to understand format, she details the facts behind the long running civil war between the North and the South of Sudan, chronicling the devastating effects it has had on the people who live there: in particular the children. This is a must read for anyone with an interest in Southern Sudan!

Really great book!
I am working with adults who were "lost boys" and there is much speculation about the quality of their past education in the refugee camps and if they will be able to go on to college.This portrait allows me to better understand their lives in the refugee camps and look at their experiences and build upon them.A lack of education should be remedied by continured education not by telling people they are "incapable."

A beautifully heart-breaking book
I've got five lost Boys from Sudan in my Sunday School class and was trying to find more about them, their country and their situation. I found myself in tears as I read the book and looked at the wonderful photos. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting more information. It's easy to read for children but not so simplistic that adults can't benefit from it also.

wonderful, vivid
As the foster mother of two "Lost Boys" who have immigrated as refugees to the U.S., I found this book invaluable for understanding the day-to-day conditions under which my boys grew up.We've read lots of scholarly books and newspaper articles, but seeing the photos of the boys at school (scratching out their numbers in the dirt using a twig), grinding maize with a giant mortar and pestle (a 2 hour-a-day chore, according to one of my boys), and wasting away from lack of medicine provided me with a much clearer view.

The writing is also terrific and moving, and photography vivid and beautiful.Recommended for anyone with an interest in Africa, refugees, and stories of human endurance and dignity.A good book for adults as well as younger people.

The ramblings of an amateur with a camera.
There is often considerable confusion whenever White Star publishing of Italy produce yet another book about the sea which is aimed primarily at scuba divers. Firstly, each book gets treated to a particular brand of Italian English which is hard to understand and makes reading the item very difficult indeed. Secondly, they appear to use a small number of truly excellent underwater photographers who are then incapable of delivering the standard of product which the modern scuba diver "demands." Finally, the qualifications of those underwater photographers when it comes to describing that flora and fauna is, at the very least, suspect. For example, any author of a book on, say, Sharks who had a PhD in marine biology would mention that qualification somewhere within the book. Mr Mojetta appears to have no such qualifications. In short, factual errors do not seem to matter to these publishers.

Mojetta has previously produced books about the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. There are many errors in that book. He has also produced a book called "The Barrier Reefs" which later became "The Coral Reefs" - both being largely the same product. Now we have yet another tome which seeks to explain the flora and fauna of the Red Sea - which was also covered in those previous books. In some instances this book is called "Red Sea and Complete Coral Reef Guide" in another it is called "The Red Sea - Underwater Paradise" and in yet another it is simply called "Underwater Paradise" and yet it is all the same book.

My biggest problem with Angelo Mojetta, however, are his qualifications, ability and experience for writing a book of this type. In short, they do not appear to exist. There are many errors in his previous works and other instances where the same picture of a fish is described as being one species in one book and something very different in another.

There is far more to writing books about the flora and fauna of our seas than simply taking a photograph and looking that species up in a book written by somebody else! Sadly, Mojetta's errors will be accepted as being factually correct by some divers who will then put the wrong name into their logbook.

In summary, this is "not" a trustworthy guide, it is a book that serious marine biologists will laugh at. It is, however, packed with outstanding photography - photography which should not be allowed to fool the reader into believing the written content is anything more than the ramblings of an amateur with a camera.

In the days when refugees first arrived, Ada Bai was an empty field along Ethiopia’s northwest border, but it is now a viable—arguably thriving—community.

For the former refugees who fled from northern Ethiopia to eastern Sudan to escape war and famine in 1984 and returned to their country of birth in 1993, "coming home" really meant creating a new home out of an empty space. Settling in a new area, establishing social and kin ties, and inventing social practices, returnees gradually invested their environment with meaning and began to consider their settlement home.
