Product Description
A number of devices utilizing HTS technology are being installed in electric grids worldwide but there is no single source or book that discusses design and manufacturing issues relating to power applications of HTS. This book will provide a single source illustrating design, analysis and manufacturing concepts for different power devices utilizing HTS.  Engineers at OEM, utilities, industry and universities will be able to understand the basic theory, perform design and analysis for different devices. Each chapter will be dedicated to a specific device; i.e. motors, generators, cables, etc.  For each device, the book will discuss its history, advantages offered by the HTS technology, contrast between conventional and HTS device design approaches, design and performance analyses. It will also provide examples of devices built to date utilizing the HTS technology.

--- The High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) is one of the most promising technologies to reduce electric losses and to increase the efficiency of power equipment. But up to now, there was no authored book available on this field.  The book of Swarn Kalsi, a leading expert on the HTS subject, gives an outstanding survey of the HTS technology itself as well as of the design rules, performance analyses and manufacturing concepts for power application related devices. It thoroughly compares conventional and HTS approaches for device design and provides significant examples of devices utilizing the HTS technology today.  The book is useful for a broad spectrum of professionals worldwide, i.e. students, teaching staff, OEM designers as well as users in industry and electric utilities.

Product Description
Superconductivity is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense, world-wide, research effort during this time, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such "strongly correlated" solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic.
High-Tc superconductors also have significant potential for applications in technologies ranging from electric power generation and transmission to digital electronics. This ability to carry large amounts of current can be applied to electric power devices such as motors and generators, and to electricity transmission in power lines. For example, superconductors can carry as much as 100 times the amount of electricity of ordinary copper or aluminum wires of the same size.

This volume presents new and significant research on yttrium barium copper oxide superconductors, often abbreviated YBCO, is a chemical compound with the formula YBa2Cu3O7. This material, a famous "high-temperature superconductor", achieved prominence because it was the first material to superconduct above the boiling point of nitrogen.
All materials developed before YBCO became superconducting only at temperatures near the boiling points of liquid helium or liquid hydrogen (Tb = 20.1 K). The significance of the discovery of YBCO is the breakthrough in the refrigerant used to cool the material to below the critical temperature. ... Read more

Product Description
Ferromagnetism and superconductivity have long been thought to be mutually exclusive. Recently however it was found that the compounds UGe2, URhGe and UIr belong to a class of materials in which ferromagnetisme and superconductivity appear simultaneously. One characteristic property of these compounds is the existence of strong correlations between the magnetic moments of the uranium ions and the conduction electrons. These correlations lead to unusual magnetic properties at low temperatures. By applying external pressure the magnetic correlations can be varied. The fact that superconductivity in these materials is found only for those pressures, at which the magnetic correlations are strongest, indicates that the effective attracting force between the conduction electrons responsible for superconductivity has a magnetic origin. In this research the magnetic correlations of the ferromagnetic superconductors are investigated in order to better understand the unusual coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity. Besides the dilatometry, specific heat, magnetization, and three-dimensional neutron depolarization techniques, the muon spin relaxation (MSR) technique is frequently used in the study of the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic superconductors. The muon experiments indicate that unusual excitations exist in these materials which are possibly responsible for the superconductivity.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book presents a complete encyclopedia of superconducting fluctuations, summarizing the last thirty-five years of work in the field. The first part of the book is devoted to an extended discussion of the Ginzburg-Landau phenomenology of fluctuations in its thermodynamical and time-dependent versions and its various applications. The second part deals with microscopic justification of the Ginzburg-Landau approach and presents the diagrammatic theory of fluctuations. The third part is devoted to a less-detailed review of the manifestation of fluctuations in observables: diamagnetism, magnetoconductivity, various tunneling characteristics, thermoelectricity, and NMR relaxation. The final chapters turn to the manifestation of fluctuations in unconventional superconducting systems: nanodrops, nanorings, Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless state, quantum phase transition between superconductor and insulator, and thermal and quantum fluctuations in weak superconducting systems. The book ends with a brief discussion on theories of high temperature superconductivity, where fluctuations appear as the possible protagonist of this exciting phenomenon. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is P. W. Anderson's long-awaited full presentation of his theory of high-Tc superconductivity in the cuprates. He realized that this striking new phenomenon needed for its explanation not just a new mechanism or "gimmick" but a radical reworking of the electronic theory of metals, especially those of low dimension. The many fundamentally new ideas that are first fully presented here will require a rewriting of the textbooks of many-body theory, which may take decades. The book incorporates full discussions of the experimental situation in these complex materials, both the normal and the superconducting states. The latestadvances are contained in a selection of re-and pre-prints of recent work by Anderson and collaborators.

The fundamental insight contained in the book is that the conditions for validity of the renormalized quasiparticle theory of metals ("Fermi Liquid Theory") are much more restrictive than had been thought, and are not satisfied in the CuO2 planes of high-Tc materials (among, probably, many other examples). This requires a new state of matter to be invented, new transport theories, and new mechanisms for superconductivity. This book will supersede all theoretical discussions of superconductivity that are now available in book form. ... Read more

Product Description

The book deals with the flux pinning mechanisms and properties and the electromagnetic phenomena caused by the flux pinning common for metallic, high-temperature and MgB2 superconductors. The loss originates from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the flux motion.

Readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hysteresis type in spite of such mechanism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Auseful reference in type II superconductors
This book constitutes a standard reference for those who work in scientific and/or technological aspects of type II superconductors. It reviews in a quite condensed fashion a great deal of the present knowledgeon the vortex state of type II superconductors, although it does notinclude the -intensively explored-mixed state of HTc materials. Quite"esoteric" subjects as the Corbino disk, or the influence of contacts inthe noise spectra of type II superconductors are presented. Due to theextension of its scope within the field and its conciseness, it constitutesa nice reference book for those who work in type II superconductors. Theonly practical drawback is that units and notation are sometimes tricky.Other books in its same style, such as "Irreversible properties of type IIsuperconductors" by Ullmaier (1975) might have the same usefulness, though. ...
