Extractions: Taekwondo, a traditional Korean martial art, will be an official Olympic sport at Athens 2004 and subsequent Olympic Games, said Kim Un-yong, an executive board member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), on Dec. 19. A letter from IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch read, "I am pleased to announce that during the recent meeting of the Executive Board (of the IOC) held from Dec. 11 to 13 in Lausanne, (Switzerland) it has been decided to confirm taekwondo as an Olympic sport." "The IOC sport director will soon be in contact with you in order to develop the qualification system for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in this regard," Samaranch said in the letter. Taekwondo debuted as a medal sport on a temporary basis at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It was a demonstration event at both the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. ¡ãKim Un-yong Kim, who also serves as president of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), said the IOC decision on the Korean martial art was an honor not only to Koreans but also to WTF family members around the world. "The IOC's acceptance of taekwondo as a permanent medal sport at subsequent Olympic Games can be recorded as a landmark event in Korean sports history," Kim said. "It was the result of successful operation and management of the taekwondo competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and concerted efforts by both the WTF and the Korean government."

Extractions: Sports exchanges between South and North Korea are expected to rise this year, as a result of ongoing inter-Korean cooperation and reconciliation efforts. South and North Korean athletes and officials march together under a unified Korean Peninsula flag during the opening ceremony of the 14th Asian Games in Busan Sept. 29 last year. According to local sports experts, North Korea is expected to send its athletes and supporters to another international sports event to be staged in the South, the 2003 Daegu Universiade, scheduled for August, as the communist country did for the first time during the 2002 Busan Asian Games. However, experts expressed fear that the chilly ties between North Korea and the United States over the North's nuclear ambitions might affect planned South-North sports exchanges. The ice was broken last year when North Korea dispatched about 450 athletes and officials, as well as supporters to the 14th Asian Games in September, making it the first international sporting event held in South Korea to which North Korea dispatched athletes in large numbers. As part of inter-Korean sports exchange programs, the two Koreas exchanged taekwondo demonstration teams last year, while staging a friendly soccer match in Seoul.

An accomplished athlete in his own right, Mr. Nowicki won the Lee Cup in 1991, the biggest taekwondo forms tournament in Poland; in 1986 he won the gold medal in the Poland National Taekwondo Championships. In 1979 he competed in the World Taekwondo Championship (fighting). From 1972 to 1982 he participated in judo and competed several times in Championships of Poland. He has trained athletes in freestyle and greco-roman wrestling, judo, Olympic style taekwondo (his team consistently wins national championship), and karate. Korean martial arts masters wanted to eliminate Japanese influences. They began discussions on how to return to the traditional Taekyon based Korean martial arts and on how to unite the various martial arts schools (or Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. After several years of discussions, the name "TaeKwonDo" was chosen in April 1955 by the board of masters of the various Kwans, and the Kwans started to unify through the late 1950s. 1961 saw the creation of the Korea Taesoodo Association, which changed its name to Korea TaeKwonDo Association in 1965. The spread of TaeKwonDo as a martial art and competitive sport continues to this date. The principle events in the rapid evolution of TaeKwonDo as a popular world wide sport are: 1973 - World TaeKwonDo Federation created. 1975 - General Association of International Sports Federations recognizes the WTF. 1976 - TaeKwonDo accepted as a Conseil International du Sport Militaire sport (world level military sports organisation).
