History A history of The EnglishSpeaking Union of Citizens of England, Scotland, america,Ireland, Wales Former president william howard taft agreed to serve as first http://www.esu-ftw.org/history.htm
Extractions: of the United States from The First Thirty-five Years of The English-Speaking Union of the United States. Fort Worth Branch by Dr. Troy C. Crenshaw In 1908, Evelyn Wrench, a young British writer, editor, and journalist, completed such extended visits in this country that he had come to understand Americans as did few other Britishers. Returning to this country the next year with his chief, Lord Northcliff, on a 10,000-mile transcontinental trip, Wrench lunched with Walter Hines Page, then editor of the magazine The World's Work . Page, later America's wartime Ambassador to the Court of St. James, was in complete agreement with Wrench's opinion that Britishers and Americans were astonishingly ignorant of one another that there should be "a coming-together of the minds of Anglekin." The conversation between this Englishman and this American led to their lasting friendship and to the plans of Evelyn later Sir Evelyn for a political alliance between English-speaking peoples of all the world. World War I delayed Sir Evelyn's fulfillment of his dreams by almost a decade. On June 28, 1918, as head of the Ministry of Information under Lord Beaverbrook, he dined with a group of fifteen friends at the Marlborough Club in London. Citizens of England, Scotland, America, Ireland, Wales, South Africa, the British West Indies, and Australia made up the party. Before the meeting adjourned, ten years of planning and dreaming on the part of Sir Evelyn were brought to fruition. The English-Speaking Union was organized, with Sir Evelyn as its Chairman. A committee was instructed to draft by-laws and formulate a program. By Christmas of 1918, two hundred distinguished persons had been added to the Union membership, including Winston Churchill, Arnold Bennet, Sir Hary Lauder, President Judson of Chicago University, President Schurman of Cornell University, and a young Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Extractions: The first casualty associated with the start of the American Revolutionary War was a man named Crispus Attucks, who died alongside several associates during the infamous "Boston Massacre." Attucks was 27 years old and a natural born leader, according to his friends. He was also an escaped slave. In the late 1960's a Texas legislator became annoyed with his fellow legislators' habit of passing bills without giving them proper study and consideration. He therefore introduced a bill commending Mr. Albert DiSalvo for his outstanding work in population control. At the time, Mr. DiSalvo was on trial for a series of murders and was better known by his nickname, The Boston Strangler. The Bill passed unanimously. The U.S. knew the Japanese were going to bomb Pearl Harbor a full ten hours before the attack on December 7, 1941. American forces intercepted a 14-part Japanese message and deciphered it by 4:37 a.m. Washington time. The message supposedly remained in the code room for 3 hours before President Roosevelt was notified. By 11:00 a.m., the message was transmitted to all areas of the Pacific except Hawaii, where the receiver was supposedly not working. Pearl Harbor finally received the message 3 hours after the attack and after 3000 people lost their lives.

Extractions: William Howard Taft Distinguished jurist, effective administrator, but poor politician, William Howard Taft spent four uncomfortable years in the White House. Large, jovial, conscientious, he was caught in the intense battles between Progressives and conservatives, and got scant credit for the achievements of his administration. Born in 1857, the son of a distinguished judge, he was graduated from Yale, and returned to Cincinnati to study and practice law. He rose in politics through Republican judiciary appointments, through his own competence and availability, and because, as he once wrote facetiously, he always had his "plate the right side up when offices were falling." But Taft much preferred law to politics. He was appointed a Federal circuit judge at 34. He aspired to be a member of the Supreme Court, but his wife, Helen Herron Taft, held other ambitions for him.

Extractions: The College of Law is honored to present Edward J. Larson as the 2001 William Howard Taft Lecturer on Constitutional Law. In his lecture, entitled "The Meaning of the Human Genome Project for Disability Law," Professor Larson will focus on how the Human Genome Project offers the promise of identifying in advance those persons certain, likely or predisposed to develop various hereditary conditions, some of which may be perceived as "disabilities." Drawing on Americas experience with eugenics during the early 1900s, this lecture will explore legal and social concerns raised by this promise and focus on what it may mean for those then labeled by their genetic markers. Professor Larson earned a B.A. from Williams College, a J.D. from Harvard, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Science from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Before accepting a teaching position at Georgia in 1987, he served as Associate Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor (1983-89) and as an attorney with a major Seattle law firm (1979-83). Professor Larson is currently the Richard B. Russell Professor of History and Law at the University of Georgia where he holds a joint appointment in the history department and law school.
