   Extractions: Pilipino, which is based on Tagalog , is the National Language of the Republic of the Philippines. It consists of two words, Taga and Ilog. Literally, it means 'from the river'. When the government took part in the development of a Common National Language, they had decided on one of the Philippines' existing languages. Tagalog was chosen because it was the main language spoken by the people of the capital city of Manila. Standards are set based upon "the preference of literate Manilans". As one author wrote, "We must have a standard, and Manila, being the sea where all rivers meet, let us take the resulting taste and consistency of the sea." The Tagalog language was officially declared as the National Language in 1937 and had it's name changed to Pilipino. Outside the schools of Manila, Pilipino is still referred to as Tagalog. It is the language of peoples living in Metro Manila and the Calabarzon Region, i.e., Calamba, Laguna, Batanggas, Rizal and Quezon. It is spoken alongside English, an official and dominant language in education, government and commerce. In recent years, nationalism has introduced the use of Pilipino into the school curriculum and in government. The progress has been slow as English was the main language until recent years. Tagalog or Pilipino was taught as a separate subject. Although it has attained the status of National Language, people living outside the Tagalog region speak their own native tongues. Today, more than 50 million people in the Philippines use it as their mother tongue or second language. Because of intense regionalism, some people look down on other people speaking another Philippine language. Hence, there is a great disunity among the people.

    Extractions: T agalog is the most important of the many tongues and dialects of the Philippines on account of its being widely understood, and the most developed by contact with foreign idioms. Spoken by over ten million of an energetic race in the islands occupying the capital city of Manila, eight provinces surrounding the metropolis, and a number of outlying islands and districts beyond these limits, it is also generally understood by many far beyond its own territory, especially in seaport towns throughout the archipelago. The language seems to be divided into a northern and a southern dialect, the former being spoken in Bulacan, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Rizal, and parts of Tarlac, and the latter occupying La Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Tayabas, Marinduque, the coast of Mindoro and part of the Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. Dialect differences though can only be distinguished by local mannerisms in pronunciation but very seldom in meaning. The Japanese language seems to have furnished no words to the Tagalog although many Japanese came to the Islands during the seventeenth century owing to the expulsion of Japanese converts to Catholicism, who found a refuge in Manila and the adjoining provinces, mainly in Pampanga. Notwithstanding a comparatively close contact with the Chinese for several centuries and certainly antedating the Spanish conquest by many hundred years, the Chinese element in Tagalog seems limited to a few commercial terms, some household implements, and a few miscellaneous words.

After serious deliberation on the studies conducted, and in compliance with the conditions and procedures to be observed in the discharge of its duties, the Institute selected Tagalog to be the basis of the national language. Thus on December 31, 1937, President Quezon proclaimed the language based on Tagalog as the National Language of the Philippines.
