In 1991, when Croatia gained its independance, the Croatian sport has entered into the international sport family. First step was the recognition of the Croatian Olyimpic Comittee (COC) by the International Olympic Comitee (IOC) on January 17th, 1992 (only 2 days after Croatia was internationally recognised as an independet country). Croatian athlets had only 22 days to prepare themselves for their first appereance, finally under Croatian flag, on February 8th, 1992 at the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France, with small, but independant Croatian Olympic delegation, led by Mr. Antun Vrdoljak, first president of the COC, and the member of the IOC since 1995. Only 6 months later, the Croatian athlets have made great olympic and basketball victory by finishing second after a unique final encounter with the american Dream Team at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Goran Ivanisevic and Goran Prpic have also won two bronze medals in tennis for Croatia.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Founded in the United States in 1891, basketball didn't get its international roots until 1932, when the International Basketball Federation was formed. Shortly after, the federation gained recognition from the International Olympic Committee and the sport made its Olympic debut in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Since that time, the U.S. has dominated the sport, winning 11 of 14 gold medals. In 1992, the U.S. captivated the world when it introduced its "Dream Team," consisting of NBA stars who easily swept through the competition to the gold. The U.S. women have also dominated Olympic competition, taking three of six gold medals since the women's event was added.

Extractions: THE COMPETITION The 12 men's teams and ten women's teams are split into two even pools, each team having to play every other in the pool. The top four teams from each pool then advance to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winners advance to semi-finals, while the four losing teams play each other again to decide fifth to eighth place. The losing semi-finalists play for the bronze. The game is played on a court 40 metres long and 20 metres wide, divided in two by a centre line and having a goal at either end. The goal is three metres wide and two metres high. The goal area is D-shaped, the arc six metres out from the goal mouth. The free throw line, a dotted line, forms an arc three metres further out into the court. The leather ball weighs between 425g and 475g for men and between 325g and 400g for women. A game consists of 30-minute halves with a ten-minute break at half-time. The game starts, and post-goal play resumes, with a throw-off; a player stands with one foot on the centre line and throws the ball to a team-mate behind the line at least three metres away. Goals are hard to score in that nobody but the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area. Players may use any part of their bodies except their lower legs and feet to handle the ball, though they are not allowed to throw the ball to themselves; more than one touch of the ball must be part of a continuous movement such as a dribble. Players can hold the ball for only three seconds before passing, dribbling or shooting, they must take no more than three steps with the ball, and can take only three further steps during a dribble.

The 32-year-old Krakow sports teacher won the 20km walk here last week in controversial style - when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was disqualified 11 minutes after he had crossed the line in the belief he had won the gold. But Friday's triumph was much more clear-cut. Korzeniowski finished in 3hr 42min 22sec, removing his sun glasses to reveal the sweat on his face in the baking Sydney sun.

The quiet lobby, so noise-free you can hear a glove plop on the floor, signals it's Friday night, a time when most members of the downtown athletic club have better things to do than work out. But not everyone. More tactical than racquetball, which is played on the same courts, faster than tennis, and demanding more precision and stamina than any racquet sport, handball is the ultimate court game. Many who try it just once throw their bruised hands up in frustration, but most who stick with it a while become permanent converts. And it burns fat tissue better than a spa weekend in the second ring of hell.

After the men's game debuted on turf football fields at the 1936 Games in Berlin, the European-based sport next appeared in its present indoor form in 1972 at Munich. A women's division opened in 1976 and has become one of the most highly attended Olympic events. The women's division will grow to 10 teams at the Sydney 2000 Games, with the men's field remaining at 12. Seven men's teams and five women's teams qualify from the 1999 World Championships. Four more teams for each division qualify through regional tournaments in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, and Australian teams gain an automatic berth as host nation.
