A few weeks later, some women decided the game looked like fun and a team was put together for women. (Naismith later married one of those players.) The following year, Senda Berenson Abbot , a gym teacher born in Lithuania, read about the game and decided it might make a fun activity for her female students at Smith College "Berenson had drilled her team for three weeks in what she called a 'dubious experiment' for Smith, culminating in the historic game. As we've seen, to her dismay, 'the girls went wild. . . . running madly the entire length of the big floor, batting and snatching the ball. Pandemonium existed among the spectators who yelled and cheered at the top of their lungs.' The girls' bodies might have been gaining in healthful development, but Berenson shuddered at the cost to their femininity: '[T]he great desire to win and the excitement of the game will make our women do sadly unwomanly things.' Thus chastened, Berenson proceeded to take the game in what basketball historian Peter Bjarkman calls "the wrong direction" - in the direction of Victorian daintiness.'"
