Extractions: This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

Extractions: More Sports Features Page The Sports Page (c) 1997 Agence France-Presse SHANGHAI (Oct 12, 1997 - 10:22 EDT) - Olympic table tennis champion Kong Linghui was punished for "rude behavior" at China's National Games even before the event officially started. Kong, who won the Olympic doubles title with Liu Guoliang and the world individual title in 1995, was given a 'stern warning' by China's table tennis arbitration committee late Saturday after a series of incidents. The official Xinhua news agency said the star table tennis player "became the butt of ridicule" for his "rude behavior" at the eighth national Games. A ball that may have touched the edge of the table stirred controversy between Kong's side and the Shaanxi province team. Kong "kicked the shelve on the court and made jeering gestures to the referees who ruled against his teammate," Xinhua said. The arbitration committee ordered Kong's team to submit a letter of self-criticism as an apology. SPORTSERVER BASEBALL BASKETBALL FOOTBALL ... THE SPORTS PAGE

Extractions: More Sports Features Page The Sports Page (c) 1997 Agence France-Presse NIMES, France (Oct 23, 1997 - 20:40 EDT) - The last two Olympic champions had mixed fortunes here on Thursday on the opening day of the men's World Cup the most prestigious annual event in the table tennis calendar. Jan-Ove Waldner, the 1992 winner in Barcelona, had a lucky escape, to win his opening match, but there was no such joy for current Olympic winner Liu Guoliang of China. Waldner, the 1990 World Cup winner, lost in the first round of his last event, the China Open, to China's Feng Zhe last month and has not played since on the international scene. But current world champion Waldner came back from 16-19 down in the final set to beat Belgium's world number nine Jean Michel Saive 8-21, 21-13, 22-20. Waldner, whose variation of speed and spin has kept him at the top of the sport for nearly two decades, said afterward he was not playing as well as in May when he won his second world singles title in England. "It's not easy to play well all the time and I think my group is quite tough," he said, adding: "But at least I have a victory now and one more will see me into the quarterfinals."

Extractions: SYDNEY, Sept 22 (Reuters) Singapore's Jing Jun Hong staged another upset to move into the semifinals of the women's table tennis tournament at the Olympics on Friday, knocking out 10th-seeded Mihaela Joana Steff of Romania. Jing's tough 22-20 21-12 19-21 22-20 victory followed a first-round upset of world number four Sun Jin and a five-set win over China's Geng Lijuan in the second round. "I won the first game, which is a key game. That must have affected Steff mentally," said Jing, who was not seeded going into the Olympics. Jing, who was born in Shanghai and became a Singaporean citizen in 1994, was once ranked 10th in the world as a member of the powerful Chinese national team.
