Extractions: Have a look at Links2Go Thesauri Key Resources The thesauri and classification schemes in this collection are all available on the web with various search and browse facilities, and various degrees of hypertext linking. "Search" means you can enter a term and search for it directly; "browse" means you can look through alphabetical or hierarchical lists. Several of the systems allow a search in data collections to be launched directly after finding the desired search terms in the thesaurus. The term "thesaurus" is used loosely here to refer to any structured collection of interrelated terms; often, but not necessarily, in a certain domain. In addition to the thesauri/classifications themselves, I also plan to include links to thesaurus-building tools and software , to a selection of academic literature on thesauri , and to some research groups doing related work. Check back in a few weeks for first drafts.

Extractions: 15th October 2001 The Zthes profile describes an abstract model for representing and searching thesauri - semantic hierarchies of terms as described in ISO 2788 - and specifies how this model may be implemented using the Z39.50 protocol. It also suggests how the model may be implemented using other protocols and formats. The specification are in two main sections. The first is concerned solely with the abstract representation of thesaurus terms and how they may be searched; and the second with the implementation of these abstract concepts in Z39.50: how thesaurus terms are encoded in the GRS-1 record structure, how searches are encoded in the type-1 query, etc. It is intended that the abstract model described here is sufficiently general that it can also be implemented by protocols and data formats other than Z39.50. As an example, an appendix defines an XML DTD for thesaurus terms based on the model, and includes an example XML document using that DTD. What's on this site?

Extractions: Information Management Consultants This is a list of software for the development and editing of information retrieval thesauri. These are primarily thesauri which are used to standardise the terms used when indexing and searching for items in a database. An introduction to the principles of thesaurus use is given elsewhere on this site. Thesauri may also be used to expand a search statement to include alternative terms for a single concept when searching unindexed text. The basic requirements for an information retrieval thesaurus are specified in the British and International standards and in the United States national standards , though many of the "thesauri" which are published and in use today do not, unfortunately, comply with these. I have written a separate note about a type of system called a " functions thesaurus Software packages included in this list will be assumed to support the basic pairs of relationships: and to maintain consistency by ensuring that when one of these relationships is created or deleted between two terms the reciprocal relationship is also created or deleted. They should also be able to display the thesaurus in an alphabetical or hierarchical sequence, and preferably both. Other significant features will be noted in the entry for each package. "Thesauri" which are created automatically, e.g. by the statistical grouping or clustering of terms found in documents, without human intellectual analysis, are outside the scope of this document.
