Extractions: Main Page Scalzi Consulting IndieCrit Whatever ... Site Map JOHN SCALZI: WHATEVER June 17, 2002 Thanks to my wife's pregnancy, there are going to be some changes around these here parts. Most immediately, I have to start mowing the yard. Previously, Krissy mowed the yard, for two reasons: First, she's the sort of gal who enjoys working the land and having a bit of personal time out there on the lawn tractor. Second, the one time I tried mowing the lawn, I put the blades on the lowest setting and gave the lawn the yard care equivalent of a scalping. Henceforth I was not to be trusted. The scalping really wasn't intentional, mind you, but since the end result was I that I was forever banished indoors to sip frosty drinks in the air conditioning while someone else did the yard, it was from my perspective a pretty good example of the concept of "failing upwards." Be that as it may, carrying a fetus and being violently jostled on a riding mower just don't mix, so it's back in the saddle again for me this time with the mowing blade apparatus already set to the correct height (just because I'm the one who has to mow doesn't mean that I'm trusted not to screw it up). It has reacquainted me with fact that when it comes to lawns, mine is, shall we say, ridiculously oversized.

Extractions: Madison's yard waste diversion programs divert over 25,000 tons of organic material from our landfill every year. However, this success does not come cheap. These programs cost $40 to $120 per ton for collection and composting. Most of this material could be diverted right in your back yard at almost no cost whatsoever. You can compost all your yard waste. If you don't want to compost, there are some simple things you can do to save time and reduce the waste your lawn generates. LEAVE GRASS CLIPPINGS ON THE LAWN. Don't bag your grass clippings Leave them on the lawn where they will provide valuable nutrients. You don't need a mulching mower, just keep your blade sharp and mow more often according to these guidelines: 1. Let your grass grow 3 to 5 in height. 2. Cut the top one-third. 3. Water less frequently; longer grass has a deeper root system which retains moisture better. 4. Cut back on fertilizer. Tests show that you can reduce lawn feedings 25% when you leave clippings on the lawn. Try bagging your clippings only every other or every third timea 33% to 50% reduction in lawn waste represents a significant savings. You can also conduct your own comparison test on your lawn by bagging grass on half and mulching the other half.

Bald Cypress Native trees Bald Cypress. http://www.huntersponyfarm.com/garden/baldcypress.html
Extractions: Taxodium distichum Either of the two species of ornamental and timber conifers constituting the genus Taxodium, native to swampy areas of southern North America. The name bald cypress, or swamp cypress, is used most frequently as the common name for T. distichum , economically the most important. A young bald cypress is symmetrical and pyramidal, as it matures it develops a coarse, wide spread head. Its tapering trunk is usually about 100 feet tall. The reddish brown bark weathers to an ashy grey. An old tree is usually hollow and is known as pecky, or peggy, cypress in the lumber trade because of small holes in the wood caused by a fungus. A tree growing in wet soil is strongly buttressed about the base and it's horizontal roots often send conical, woody projections called "knees" above the waterline. The knees, thought to be air obtaining organs and stabilizers for the submerged roots, are popular household ornaments. The smaller pond, or upland cypress of the southeastern US, a variety of the bald cypress, sometimes is considered to be a separate species
