Extractions: The 100-metre dash is the show stopper of the Olympic Games, and one of the events in the original modern Games, in 1896. Eight runners qualify for the final, and they blast in a straight line down the track in lanes that are between 1.22 and 1.25 metres wide. Each runner is allowed only one false start, which is determined by pressure plates built into the runner's starting block. A runner has finished the race when his or her shoulders or torso cross the finish line. This has been a signature event for Canada over the years. Percy Williams of Vancouver won the 100 metres at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Harry Jerome won bronze in 1964, Ben Johnson won bronze in 1984 before winning gold and being humiliatingly disqualified for drugs in 1988. And Donovan Bailey won gold in Atlanta four years ago. Canadian women also fared well initially. Bobbie Rosenfeld won silver and Ethel Smith bronze in Amsterdam in 1928. Hilda Strike struck silver in 1932.

If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics. Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Extractions: Calm and focused. At the start tension filled the transition area and swim staging zone. Warm-ups were taken in nervous silence. Sheila seemed oddly unaffected, as though she was competing in a local triathlon, not the most important race of her career. Chatty and vibrant the morning of the race, Taormina went through her pre race ritual quickly and efficiently, utterly indifferent to the pressure of the day. (Click to enlarge) The strong chase group lacked organization. After a 15 second swim to bike transition Taormina joined forces with friend Barb Lindquist. The two were off on the first of five laps of the curvy, undulating bike course. Taormina rode with exceptional power, pushing a 55/12 and 13 gear across the flats and into the wind. Her cadence was slow and menacing as they clipped off lap after lap at an average speed of 23.5 mph. This was the fastest bike split of the day by over a half mile per hour. Taormina seemed at total ease over one minute in front of a chase pack of 12 that contained Jennifer Gutierrez, Susan Bartholomew and Karen Smyers. Despite several concerted efforts on the part of the twelve-person chase group, they only lost time to the duo of Taormina and Lindquist.

Thousands of others made their way to the venues to watch the first sporting events. For athletes and spectators, public transportation functioned smoothly. The demand upon the system was immense. On the very first day public transport had to move 1.3 million spectators, an increase of 37 per cent over the demand on an ordinary workday. It passed the test. In the days leading up to the Games, a worrying shortage of buses and bus drivers had become apparent, especially of drivers who knew the routes of Sydney. An appeal sent out for additional volunteers proved overwhelmingly successful. Numerous Sydneysiders, mostly retired taxi and bus drivers, volunteered to be navigators. A minor incident on this first day was a magpie attack on staff at the Aquilina Reserve softball venue. Three officials were slightly injured, and magpie catchers from the National Parks and Wildlife Service had to be called in to remove the offending birds. Seagulls, fruit-bats and cockatoos, possums, pelicans and snakes reminded visitors the bush was never far away from the city in Sydney. The other sports to begin on Day 1 were aquatics, archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, shooting, table tennis, volleyball and weightlifting. They offered magic moments to crowds already dazzled by the Opening Ceremony, the magnitude of the Games, and the splendour of the host city.

Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. womens 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Extractions: H ow it all began Cervélo Cycles saw the light of day in 1994 when 2 engineers, Phil White and Gérard Vroomen, decided to take the work they had been doing on developing faster Time Trial bikes to market. Already involved in bicycle and Human Powered Vehicle design since 1986, the turning point came when a top-ranked Italian pro cyclist approached Gérard to design the fastest possible Time Trial bike for him. He had come to the realization that his bike sponsor was capable of building traditional bikes using off the shelf tubesets from Columbus or Easton, but did not have the interest or expertise to develop leading edge designs with the focus on time trialing and aerodynamics. He also realized that he could not look at the novel designs put before him and know if they were improvements, or just "different". With help of his team we started the bike design from scratch. We evaluated the bikes on the market, and set a design goal for the bike that was difficult and uncompromising. We wanted something that was unbeatable in aerodynamics yet sacrificed nothing in weight or stiffness, and unfettered by issues of marketability. It was to be a one-off design for this rider. The result was a pretty radical bike that pushed the rules in almost every area. It tested extremely well for aerodynamics, as well as handling, stiffness and comfort.

On top of thousands of spectators, triathletes were honoured with the presence of royalty in IOC members, princess Anne from Great Britain and prince Albert of Monaco. All three Australian men had the support of the crowd behind them and a string of victories among them, while Britains hopes were hedging on four time Olympic distance Champion, Simon Lessing and two time European Champion, Andrew Johns.

Extractions: History of triathlon Jack Johnstone dismounted his bicycle and tried to run, but his legs felt like they didn't belong to his body. He moaned in anguish. Years later, he would remember someone yelling in response, "Well, it was your idea!" The moment of anguish came during the original triathlon in September 1974 in the southwestern United States city of San Diego. Johnstone, a former university swimmer trying to regain his fitness in his late 30s, and a man named Don Shanahan indeed had created the event. Little did they know that, along with the aptly named Dave Pain, their ideas would turn into the youngest sport of the Olympic Games just 26 years later. The Dave Pain Birthday Biathlon, a rather casual 2.8-kilometre run combined with a swim of 200 to 300 metres, had provided the prototype for triathlons. Also based in San Diego, it caught Johnstone's eye soon after he joined the jogging craze of the '70s. He competed in the second one in 1973, then again the next year, but wanted to see more swimming. Johnstone was plotting his own, expanded event when he learned of Shanahan, a man supposedly pondering something similar. Johnstone wanted equal emphasis on running and swimming, along with several alternate legs. The original run would involve racing shoes, but later running legs would be barefoot on grass or sand. Shanahan suggested a different spin a cycling leg. Great Britain's Simon Lessing at the triathlon event at the 1994 Goodwill Games in St Petersburg, Russia Phil Cole / Allsport They named their event the Mission Bay Triathlon and included 9.6km (6 miles) of running, 8km (5 miles) of cycling and 460 metres (500 yards) of swimming. Only the cycling involved a single stint. The notice in the San Diego Track Club Newsletter advised participants to bring their own bicycles. Self-explanatory for a triathlon perhaps, but then Johnstone had to create a spelling for triathlon when the trophy-maker found it wasn't in the dictionary. The race attracted 46 competitors.

Hell Of The West - History At this time in triathlons development olympic distance, which are now referredto as standard or simply as triathlon distance events were the most popular http://www.hellofthewest.com/history/history.htm
Extractions: The " Hell of the West " began life in 1989 as what was then called an Olympic distance event comprising a 1.5k swim, 40k cycle and a 10k run. Co-founders Lex Dreier and myself were both novice triathletes at the time and basically wanted to put something back into the sport that we enjoyed so much. With the assistance of then Triathlon Queensland President Barry Hawkins we conducted the first event in October of that year with a field of 45 individuals. The event was a big success with Barry Hawkins and the visiting triathletes were very pleased with the way it had been conducted. At this time in triathlons development "Olympic" distance, which are now referred to as standard or simply as triathlon distance events were the most popular and most promoted races in the country. The Goondiwindi team decided that the "Hell of the West" needed to be something unique if it was to prosper and develop a national profile. Because of the lack of quality longer distance races in Queensland it was decided that the event should be changed to a long course triathlon which is made up of a 2k swim, 80k cycle and a 20k run. With the support of Barry Hawkins the club applied to and was accepted by Triathlon Queensland to host the 1990 Long Course State Titles (we have hosted the state titles for six of the last eight years).

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.
