I can't really stand the cold that well, and I even had to get out of practice early today because it was so cold I couldn't breathe. I don't have asthma or any kind of breathing problems either. Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do about the cold, and ways that could help me breathe better during these cold morning practices?" BRRR!!! The Water's too Cold!!
Extractions: By STEVEN DOWNES SYDNEY (September 28, 2000 11:00 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - Poland's Robert Korzeniowski walked his way into the history books in Sydney on Friday morning, when he became the first man in Olympic history to win the 20km and 50km race walk double, retaining his title in the longest event on the athletics programme - another historic first. Latvia's Agars Fadejevs took silver, while Mexican Joel Sanchez finished with the bronze. Korzeniowski who took the event to a new level. The 32-year-old Krakow sports teacher won the 20km walk here last week in controversial style - when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was disqualified 11 minutes after he had crossed the line in the belief he had won the gold. But Friday's triumph was much more clear-cut. Korzeniowski finished in 3hr 42min 22sec, removing his sun glasses to reveal the sweat on his face in the baking Sydney sun.

Extractions: MichiganRunner Home Page The Michigan Runner's visit to San Diego to cover the Rock "n" Roll Marathon also allowed us to experience the terrific climate that contributed to the birth of the triathlon movement in this country. San Diego is the land of flat bellies, sun drenched bodies and amazingly fit people. The triathlon started taking shape here in the early 1970's when some San Diego runners wanted to try something different. They grabbed whichever bicycle was handy, tossed in a run and saved the swim as the last event as a way to cool off. When the triathlon moved north to Davis, California, in 1980, the water was colder than it was in San Diego. In "Triathlon, A Personal History", Scott Tinley explains, "Many a triathlete entered the water with a high body temperature (after a 5 mile run and a 20 mile bike ride) and suffered the cramping consequences, including yours truly." The pioneers learned then to move the swim to the first event. Generally, that has held as the order of business since then. While San Diego has it spot in the history of the movement, the real catalyst was the Ironman Triathlon. It created a media stir that grabbed the attention of people all over the world. The triathlon will be an official Olympic sport at the Sydney Games for the first time. In honor of this historic occasion, the Michigan Runner is delighted to recognize the accomplishments of two of our star triathletes, Karen McKeachie and Sheila Taormina. I think we all share our amazement at the discipline, dedication and time management skills of competitive triathletes who train and race in three different sports.

Extractions: The Races What is Ironman triathlon? Ironman triathlon is one of the most grueling events in the world of sport, and also one of the most inspiring. Ironman triathlon features a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a complete marathon (26.2 miles) all in succession. Athletes have 17 hours to complete the event (from the 7 a.m. start until midnight). ^ top Ironman History Ironman triathlon had the humblest of beginnings, as a bunch of Navy Seals, stationed in Hawaii were discussing who were the fittest athletes in the world. Were swimmers, cyclists or runners the fittest? Navy commander John Collins decided there was only one way to find out and that was to do all three at once.
