This spring semester program provides about five SLU students an opportunity to join PLU students in studying the rich and varied culture of the two-island nation. The program includes a one-month orientation course, a field study course in Caribbean culture and society that runs the entire semester, and direct enrollment in two courses of their choice at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Caribbean archipelago, and are geologically an extension of the South American continent. Trinidad is separated from Venezuela by the 7-mile (11km) straits of the Gulf of Paria. Tourism and promiscuity are being blamed by health experts for the fast rising incidence of the dreaded Acquired Immmune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Tobago, an island that has begun to establish itself as an alternative to traditional tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Despite the high rate of HIV infection in its sister island of Trinidad, Tobago was long spared the scourge of AIDS. Whereas Tobago had only a few cases of infection prior to 1990, in Trinidad, AIDS was already the third ranking cause of death for men between the ages of 15 and 24 years and the second ranking cause of death for men in the age group 25 to 34 years. Now, at least one person in all but one of the villages in Tobago, has tested positive for the HIV virus. Between 1990 and 1996, 218 persons, most of them male, tested positive for the virus, with 91 deaths within this period. These statistics show only part of the picture. Not included in the official figures are those people who choose to be tested in private laboratories or in Trinidad.

This program is conducted in three countries of the English-speaking Caribbean: Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. It offers a unique opportunity for students to study, observe, and participate in the culturally diverse West Indian societies. Students are encouraged to take the introductory course on the history, culture and politics of the Caribbean. This course involves faculty from both Michigan State University and the University of the West Indies. I am pleased to announce that we will be visiting the Aripo Savanna Scientific Reserve on Sunday 16th February. This is a very rare opportunity as entry to this area is restricted. I have been granted a group permit for this occasion. This will be a learning experience for many as it is a unique habitat of rare flora and fauna and we are prepared to pass on some knowledge on this fascinating landscape. There are several species of Orchids to be observed. This is a field trip; not a walk around the Queen's Park Savannah! The correct apparel is long pants and loose fitting sleeves, comfortable shoes and socks, head gear. Be prepared for a three hour hike mainly in the shade. This includes the return trip. Travel light, with snacks and most importantly water. Plastic water pouches are ideal. You may leave a picnic lunch in your car to be consumed after our hike. Insect repellent is optional. Rendezvous point is Phoenix Farms on Mausica Road, Dabadie (Dr. D. Raj Kumar), where we will form a car pool. The parking arrangement here is secure.
