Product Description
The mass media sees social change through genderedspectacles, which often puts women at risk ofnegative representations. The author addresses howgender is constructed in Tanzanian newspapers andlocal television drama against the backdrop ofpolitical and economic reforms. The movement fromsocialist to capitalist principles, starting in themid 1980s, fueled public distress concerning theeffects of Western influence and commercialization onlocal culture and morality. This book shows thatconflicts and tensions arising from this processreverberate in the mass media, as can be seen in themassive coverage of women as victims of genderviolence and sexual abuse, recurring images of womenas prostitutes, as well as the ?gold-digger? girls. This work offers an original contribution to researchon Tanzanian media and gender issues; linkingrepresentations of women to power, empowerment anddevelopment. With its explorative view andcomprehensive empirical analyses of culturalrepresentations, including examination of audiences?interpretations, this book will be essential readingfor students and scholars of communications, development studies and women?s studies. ... Product Description
Tanzania has to this date performed three general elections but still the ruling party CCM has a strong grip over politics in the country. This book explores the challenges of consolidating multiparty democracy in Tanzania leading to the overall question: What are the possibilities and constraints for consolidation of multiparty democracy in Tanzania? One of the main arguments made is that the ruling party and its leaders on both national and local levels are frequently using the concepts peace, unity and harmony as prime values and existing conditions in the country created by the ruling party CCM and its founding father, Julius K. Nyerere. The usage of these concepts becomes at the local level arguments against multiparty system. Thus, the multiparty system has been met by people with caution; a political form that must be entered into carefully while keeping a watchful eye on the (still) unknown opposition parties and their qualifications. The findings are of interest for academics and practitioners interested in popular perceptions in the field of democracy promotion and election monitoring. ... Read more

The Luo (also called Jaluo and Joluo) are an ethnic group in Kenya, eastern Uganda, and northern Tanzania. They are part of a larger group of ethnolinguistically related Luo peoples who inhabit an area including southern Sudan, northern and eastern Uganda, western Kenya, and northern Tanzania. The Luo are the third largest ethnic group (13%) in Kenya, after the Kikuyu (22%) and the Luhya (14%). The Luo and the Kikuyu inherited the bulk of political power in the first years following Kenya's independence in 1963. The Luo population in Kenya was estimated to be 3,185,000 in 1994 . The Tanzanian Luo population was estimated at 280,000 in 2001. The main Luo livelihood is fishing. Outside Luoland, the Luo work in eastern Africa as tenant fishermen, small scale farmers, and urban workers. They speak the Dholuo language, which belongs to the Western Nilotic branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family spoken by other Luo-speaking peoples such as the Lango, Acholi, Padhola and Alur (all of Uganda). ... Product Description
The Early Pleistocene sediments of Peninj, west of Lake Natron (Tanzania), contain a wealth of archaeological and paleontological sites formed during the emergence of the genus Homo and the extinction of the last australopithecines. Peninj has preserved tantalizing evidence that hominids, living in an open savanna, were acquiring animal resources through predation. Evidence also suggests that hominids repeatedly visited points on the landscape to conduct specific and distinct activities, such as butchering or tool manufacture. The lithic assemblage reveals complex planning in stone tool production and use, and the oldest evidence of woodworking. The results of the research described here constitute a major contribution to the study of human evolution and to reconstructing the behavior of early Homo erectus. (Oxbow Books 2010) ... Read more

Product Description
A compilation of nine studies from the Reproductive Health Study Group at the University of Dar es Salaam. They highlight the erosion of customary institutions that regulate procreation and express the meaning of gender and marriage. They show the failure of modern education to prepare the young for gendered adulthood. A central tenet of the work is that without an understanding of the dynamics of local customs and attitudes as well as their significance to the people who hold them, change initiated from without becomes ineffective and unsustainable. ... Product Description

In Africa, why have so many more women converted to Christianity than men? What explains the appeal of Christianity to women? What does religious conversion mean for the negotiation of gender and ethnic identity? What role does religious conversion play as a tool for empowering women? In The Church of Women, Dorothy L. Hodgson looks at how gender has shaped the encounter between missionary priests and Maasai men and women in Tanzania. Building on her extensive experience with Maasai and the Spiritan missionaries, Hodgson explores how gendered change among Maasai has shaped women's notions of religious faith, religious practice, and spiritual power. Hodgson explores the appeal of Catholicism among women in East Africa, the enmeshing of Catholic practice with Maasai spirituality, and the meaning of conversion to new Christians. This rich, engaging, and original book challenges notions about religious encounter and the role of ethnic identity, female authority, and power among Maasai.

1-0 out of 5 stars An absolute disaster
I read this book while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the town of Lushoto, the setting of the book and the author's Peace Corps site.I was shocked at how many things were bad about the book.First of all, the writing was terrible - flat and boring, with an idiotic storyline and flaky, unbelievable characters.Worse than that, however, were the depictions of the people of Lushoto.I couldn't believe that someone who had lived with these people could think them so shallow and pitiful. They're people, for gods sake, not animals. The author must never have left his house during his two year stay. The "hero" of the story comes in with dumb ideas of how great his culture is and how he's going to bring it to these poor savages, and never really grows out of it.Which, I might add, is an insult to Peace Corps volunteers - but I will hope that the unfortunate readers of this book don't assume all PCVs are like that.

If your curiosity gets the better of you and you just have to read this book, for the love of god, don't buy a new copy. The author needs no more financial support from this pile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jordan got what he deserved
All in all, this was a somewhat decent book.Jordan Rutldge, in my opinion, was nothing more than a child molester and rapist.I sure hope that other Peace Corps volunteers are not like him!!
In the end, Jordan got what he deserved!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time...
As someone who picked this book up with a personal interest in the peace corps, I still found it utterly unreadable. The prose is flat and dull. This was Mr. Carter debut; let's hope that it was also his last book.

1-0 out of 5 stars insulting to the African people...
As someone who was born in Africa and went on to be educated in the United States, I find his depiction of the African people to be offensive.I also do not think much of his poor writing talent. Thumbs down.

1-0 out of 5 stars not what I was expecting...
as someone who has been in the peace core, I just couldn't relate to this.I found it trite and poorly written. I don't recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description

"All traders are thieves, especially women traders," people often assured social anthropologist Tuulikki Pietilä during her field work in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in the mid-1990s. Equally common were stories about businessmen who had "bought a spirit" for their enrichment. Pietilä places these and similar comments in the context of the liberalization of the Tanzanian economy that began in the 1980s, when many men and women found themselves newly enmeshed in the burgeoning market economy. Even as emerging private markets strengthened the position of enterprising people, economic resources did not automatically lead to heightened social position. Instead, social recognition remained tied to a complex cultural negotiation through stories and gossip in markets, bars, and neighborhoods.
With its rich ethnographic detail, Gossip, Markets, and Gender shows how gossip and the responses to it form an ongoing dialogue through which the moral reputations of trading women and businessmen, and cultural ideas about moral value and gender, are constructed and rethought. By combining a sociolinguistic study of talk, storytelling, and conversation with analysis of gender, the political economy of trading, and the moral economy of personhood, Pietilä reveals a new perspective on the globalization of the market economy and its meaning and impact on the local level.
