ok overall but i say compare with others before buying
The book had a lot of information some repeated itself word for word for an entire page. i had to put tabs on mine because there was so much information and not enough spacing. Also there was a lot of editing errors.
The information was helpful though and the test was good.

TexES ELA/Reading 8-12
Fantastic study guide, better than what was available on the SBEC website.There were test questions that followed the book's format.Well worth the money.I highly recommend this to anyone preparing for the test.

Save Your $$$ - This Sloppy Book Is Worthless
At first glance, this book looked like the answer to my prayers.Scanning through it in the book store, I marveled at how in-depth it went into each domain and competency.It was one of the few books I found at the book store which promised to prepare me specifically for the English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 test.

What a disappointment!!!

First of all, it is a book about ENGLISH and GRAMMAR, yet it is FULL of typos and errors!!What a joke!

Second, the writer obviously knew NOTHING about the actual TExES English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 test.I took a practice version of the test at my teaching certification school.The wording of the questions and content were not even in the same ballpark!

The actual test has an essay question, or more accurately, a "Constructed-Response Assignment."The book refers to it as a "prompt."Here's what the book said about the essay part of the test, which incidentally, is worth 30% of the grade:

"In most testing situations, 30 minutes would be allowed to respond to each of the prompts.Some tests may allow 60 minutes for the essay to incorporate more than one question..."

Some tests?What about the TExES English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 test?!I didn't buy this book to be lectured on generic essay theory.I bought it because it promised specific TExES English Language Arts and Reading 8-12 test help!The three "prompt" examples they gave weren't even close to the type of question on the test.

I also ended up going to the library and checking out a pretty good study guide on the TExES tests written by The Princeton Review.

Not What I Needed
This book gave a lot of information, but much of it was redundant.Whole paragraphs were cut and pasted into separate sections and there were many typos throughout the text.

In addition, once I took the test I realized the book was heavy on content information, but light on teacher classroom experience information.Unfortunately, when I took the test, the 90 questions were heavily weighted toward the latter.Also, it did not give enough information about ESL (ELLs) and difficult classroom situations regarding curriculum choices.

The content material was relevant, but overkill compared with the actual test.This author obviously knows what they teach/taught, but it didn't apply well to the test I took this past month.Is one source, but I would definitely have someone try another before recommending this one.

Promises more than it can deliver
First of all, I just finished taking the TEXES English Language Arts 8-12 exam.After having read this book twice I was still not prepared for the questions on the test.This book was written by someone who did an extensive job of covering the guidelines but had no idea what the exam context was.The test in the back of the book is in no way reflective of the test either in content or execution.

Mechanically this book was sloppy also.The company claims that it has dozens of highly trained individuals working on these books.However these books are put together so quickly that there are NUMEROUS typos, the odd key word in various phrases missing altogether and just a general sense of a lack of direction.

While I am happy to have the knowledge in this text and I will keep it to use as general reference I feel that the $55 spent was a bit of a waste.Find another study guide.Hell, pay $100 and attend a TEXES prep work shop.Depending on how well I did on the test I may be sitting in there with you. ... best bargain
I am 100% satisfied with my experience with Amazon and I am looking forward to continue doing business with it.

AWFUL
This guide is simply awful. It is written using language that is not easily understood. The test at the end does not correspond to the skills reviewed during the book. The test at the end literaly asks questions that are no where to be found in the book, very very annoying. I felt like I needed a guide book to help me understand this guidebook. here is an example of the language used in this book: " effective academic writing requires that the student be able to choose appropriate patterns of discourse, which in turn involves knowing sociolinguistic conventions relating to audience and purpose". the whole book is written this way, just unnecessary.

Not too helpful
I studied this book extensively before my Math (89) MTTC test, and I didn't really find it to be helpful once I got to the test. The problems in the book were a lot different then the problems on the actual test. I don't even think it really covered the same concepts. ... Read more

ICTS Study Guide
The study guide is comprehensive and has many links to explore the subject in more detail.
The solved problems part, though, has many mistakes, but easy to catch.

i just took the icts this past saturday.this book provides an adequate review of the chemistry.however, the icts chem test covers earth science, bio, etc.the earth science review in the icts 106 guide is horrible compared to the depth of knowledge required for the icts chem test.don't rely on this book exclusively.use it for the chem knowledge and supplement it with sat/ap chem review guides.review another book with a summary of earth science.

This study prep book was so off the mark. The level of rigor in this book was way too low and the content was a complete miss when it came to the actual MTTC test. After reading and studying through this entire book and scoring well on the practice test, I felt completely unprepared during the actual exam.

What a waste!
I purchased this guide because it is the same brand I used for another GACE test and found it to be a great tool.This particular guide was not helpful at all.There were multiple typos within the text.The content was not written clearly.It was difficult to follow and large sections were "cut and pasted" in several places.The practice test had at least 5 dulpicated questions.This guide not reflective of the actual test at all.I am very disapointed with this guide and would not recommend it to anyone.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! ... Don't even think about it
I don't know why I didn't listen to the other reviewer who gave this a lousy score.This book says it is for the Praxis II, but I have the ETS review guide as well (which is done by the same people who make the Praxis) and this book does not follow the format at all.In addition, it is full of mistakes (gives you the wrong answers, leaves out the forth choice in a multiple choice, erroneous grammar, etc.)Bottom line: Don't buy it!!

Very diasppointing!
I am French and I bought this Praxis II French sample test to practice my exam. I was very disappointed with the quality of the material. One question has a missing answer choice which is actually the correct one. Some sentences for which we have to find the missing word don't sound French or others have the verbs incorrectly written. There are also some errors in the answers. This is not a serious materiel for serious students!

Best book is true to its name!
The exams were right on target for the praxis. Excellent book!

I Passed!
This book gave a great idea of the type of information that would be found on this particular PRAXIS. The actual test was more complex (naturally), but I was prepared.

Best Teachers' Test Preparation for the PLT: K-6
My students/first year teachers have been using this review for about six months. Their pass rate has been excellent on the PLT; their recommendations of the guide have been enthusiastic.
Test-takers should remember that this is a REVIEW of information that they should already know. Inclusion of actual test questions is not possible because the test is frequently revised by ETS. Teachers/future teachers know that giving the exact questions (if they were available) would not be legal and would INVALIDATE the test. (Be sure you recognize that term.) Pay particular attention to the test-taking tips! Best wishes and happy testing!

A Book for Potential Teachers Should Not Be Error-Filled
Pending my decision to change careers from the law to teaching in NY State, I purchased both this book, and it's competitor book from Barron's. I found this volume HORRIBLE, in that it is filled with INCORRECT ANSWERS, TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS, and looks like a hasty compendium by a husband-and-wife team to put together a review book for Teacher Certification Candidates rapidly.Very disappointing, and AWFUL for those with less experience at spotting these discrepancies.USE THE BARRON'S ONLY!!!

However, the answer reads as if the original question was "Which of the following WOULD be a...suggestion..by the mentor...".As follows:
32.(D) One of the key tenets in improvement of classroom management is treating students with love and respect.Some ways to do this is [sic] to give the students a surprise treat (A) or give them a reward for no reason at all (B).Choice C makes the student feel that the teacher is their friend.
D is incorrect [WHAA?REMEMBER, THEY JUST GAVE D AS THE CORRECT ANSWER.]because choosing a failing grade, even in private, will reduce the self-esteem of the student. AND THE OTHER AVAILABLE CHOICE, "E", ISN'T EVEN MENTIONED!

In addition, the copyright date of this book is 1999!The REA book has a copyright of 2002, and the note "...2003 printing"."Cracking The NYSTCE"has a 2003 copyright.Also all the ARCO study sections are for the LAST Exam, not the ATS-W exam. Plus, the ATS-W exams are marked 1 and 2.There doesn't seem to be any difference between secondary and elementary preparation in this book.Disappointing.

The book's tips are o.k. but there's a better format in The Princeton Review book "Cracking The NYSTCE".The REA book has good tests and good content reviews also.

Many Errors Found in this book!
This book has a tremendous number of errors. This should not be happening in a study manual for the NYS teaching exam. Most of the errors are in the Math Review section where the question doesn't match the solution! There are also errors in the Science Review. At one point a table doesn't match the questions!
