Teaching Reading Across Subject Areas
I checked out this book at my local public library, but I kept getting late fees for keeping it too long.It has been invaluable in my degree program.I decided it was time for me to get my own personal copy for future use.This is an excellent reference book for curriculum planning and enhancement.It contains a host of reading activities that can be used for subject areas such as math, social studies, and science.Teachers are always looking for ways to increase students' reading in the content areas--this book certainly accomplishes that task.It also helped me to generate ideas of my own in other subject areas, e.g., geography, thematic units, and lesson plans, etc.It should be called the guide to teaching reading across the curriculum.Do use the reference pages in the back of the book as they offer another great resource for incorporating these content areas into reading.I especially like that it has wonderful ideas for secondary students.It has made my unit planning so much easier, and made learning fun for my students.

Generic, bland, impractical teacher's ed text.
This is more or less the downmarket version of Kylene DeBeers substantially better "Why Kids Can't Read". In this text, Robb repeatedly cites herself and employs a "three part learning framework" that's so asinine she can't even seem to keep it straight. Really who would do lesson plans in chunks of beginning/middle/end? It's silly. No really, that's her "revolutionary" idea.

Anyway the book is littered with inconsistencies, the strategies do not even match up to the same part of her learning framework throughout the book (for proof check the list on p.58 and compare with the list on p.231 for one example). The strategies themselves are pretty much the same as every other book like this. Not particularly bad, but Vacca & Vacca have a lot more of them (and had some nice graphic organizers) and DeBeers' text was at least marginally interesting about it.

The worst part is how ridiculously impractical it is. Depth, not breadth is emphasized, which is commendable in principle, but if you taught like this, you'd finish maybe a chapter by the end of June and your kids would be illiterate. It recommends 20-30 minutes for responding to prompts - a 5-7 minutes "Do Now" activity. It's a hysterically out of touch book by another educrat. If you listen to the time guidelines, prepare to be fired.

Think "Inside-the-Box" Textbook
It is disappointing that we teach and are taught with such uncreative, mind-numbing texts. If you want to peddle institutionalized, professor-manufacturer's, buy this, read it, and believe it.

Exactly what we needed
We are a homeschooling family with 3 boys (ages 8,5, and 1).Recently it seems that more and more conflicts turn into name calling and fights.As we were studying Martin Luther King, Jr., in observance of his birthday, we took advantage of the opportunity to emphasize peaceful conflict resolution.I found a webpage that recommended this book.I am very pleased with the approach.The homeschooling environment is ideal for this approach because I can reinforce the ideas throughout the day as conflicts arise.We are only a few chapters into the book so I can't vouch for the long-lasting effects, but when I interrupt a conflict to point out how the involved parties are "moving up the conflict escalator" and to ask how they can get off of it, it gives them a chance to think (and cool off).Just giving them that opportunity is teaching them to respond rather than react, which I think is a great accomplishment.And they do actually engage in the conversation.(I sort of thought they might just roll their eyes.) I am getting most of the books from the library, however I have not been able to find some.That's really the only drawback.It's disappointing not to be able to do some of the exercises that are mapped out because I can't borrow the book.But there are many alternative books listed (without the accompanying exercises).My kids love the recommended books and ask to read them repeatedly.Many are new to me, and I consider myself to be fairly familiar with children's literature.If you are trying to give children new skills to resolve conflict, I think you would be pleased with this purchase.

Guidance Counselor's Dream-Great for Teachers Too!
I use this book every year as my Conflict Resolution curriculum in an early elementary public school.You do have to purchase some recommended books (they are fairly commom, and may be available in your school library) in order to use this curriculum, but it is worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book has some great stories for teaching non-fiction. The only drawback is it has no questions. It does give teaching suggestions and has great transparencies. Worth buying.

Teaching Students to Read Nonfiction (Grades 4 and Up
This is an excellent way to prepare students for state assessment questions. Students are exposed to the vocabulary and questions types that they need to become familiar with especially when reading non-fiction. Our staff and students used the articles regularly and find it to be very beneficial.

More "aha!" moments than I could have ever expected
I first read this book when I started my MA program four years ago. As a new teacher, I found it to be full of good advice. I just re-read the book at the end of my MA program, and found that the words of Richards and Lockhart are even more relevant than ever.

The format of the book gives the reader many opportunities to reflect on his or her own practice AND experience as a learner. The principles put forth in this book have truly helped guide me as a teacher and curriculum developer. This is not a book that goes on and on espousing pedagogical theory. Instead, it offers practical advice based on sound principles, while also presenting a wide arrray of questions and hands-on activities to guide the education/ESL practitioner.

Materials Development in Language Teaching
The item came in 2 weeks after I ordered it and in plenty of time for my College class.I am very happy with the service and speed in which I was able to receive the book.And the book came in better condition than I thought it would.

something in it for everyone in the EFL profession
Materials Development in Language Teaching consists of four sections, divided into seventeen chapters on theoretical and practical issues relating to creating or evaluating EFL materials. Section A deals with data collection and language analysis, which was interesting to read, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get round to doing a concordance by hand! Section B is about the process of materials writing, from the exploration of language, its contextual and pedagogical realisations, to the physical production of materials, their use and their evaluation. These chapters also focus on learner differences and learner choice, the need for constant evaluation and revision of one's work and the importance of compromise when dealing with publishers, schools, teachers, and learners. Section C focuses on the process of materials evaluation. It includes chapters on piloting, evaluating teaching materials, evaluating communicative tasks, and an investigation into what teachers are looking for when they choose a coursebook. All these papers are well worth reading, but I particularly enjoyed Andrew Littlejohn's systematic approach to the analysis of textbooks. As there are many more teachers who use textbooks than there are writers who write them, I suspect that his chapter will also have the widest appeal. Finally, section D is called "ideas for materials development", but unfortunately, rather than give much in the way of practical examples, it instead focuses on the weaknesses of present-day coursebooks, which typically do not cater to different learners or learning styles very well. One suggestion is to give students more autonomy by developing sourcebooks, which sounds like a great idea, but perhaps for practical or financial reasons, this may be difficult to realise. The final note comes from the editor, Brian Tomlinson, in the final summary when he looks ahead and behoves researchers, teachers, writers and publishers to pool their resources and expertise in order to create materials that will have greater value to learners. I enjoyed reading Materials Development in Language Teaching and I think that there is something in it for everyone in the language teaching profession. Mr. Charnock’s clarity, energetic style, and practical approaches will make this book a worthy addition to your teaching library, and the ideas an asset to your teaching repertoire. You will be impressed with the simplicity of learning and teaching what others have so onerously complicated. Great Classroom Advice!
I think the place where teachers often get stuck is for new ideas to keep both themselves and their students engaged.Mr. Charnock's book does a great job providing tons of ideas for activities, writing prompts and the like sure to engage almost any student.Mr. Charnock has been differentiating instruction for his students long before it became a buzz word, and if you want a straight forward book with practical, classroom ideas, this is it.

Learning through personal involvement
Any teacher of language arts and perhaps of other subjects, too, can find inspiration from Charnock's approach, which takes into account that students learn best when they drawn into the process because the subject interests them and has relevance to their lives. Charnock's years of experience give credence to his methods.He knows what works and what doesn't.

Book does not match the hype
Yes, the author does provide an activity for each language arts component.Unfortunately,its usually only one activity and it is often complicated and requires a ton of preparation.Some components, such as paragraph writing, only include one example and it is completely teacher centered instead of student centered.I expected much more from this book based on the reviews.

A Must-Have Book for Teachers of Language Arts

Student opinions about various activities, along with samples of their writing, help make the success of this approach believable.Pupils are quite frank about what they liked and didn't.And the exceptional writing samples speak for themselves.

As a language arts teacher of various elementary grades, I find James Charnock's book packed with motivating ideas that will inspire students to enjoy the beauty of the English language.I can't recommend this guide highly enough for teachers.This is sure to be (to use another of his fun vocabulary words) a real "humdinger" for both you and your students!

What's so impressive about the ideas James Charnock presents in this book is that they're creative, attention grabbing and based on his 30 years of teaching experience. Intelligently organized with each chapter focusing on a particular language arts skill, Charnock's book describes in clear, direct language stimulating games and approaches that students will enjoy doing. For example, he has great tips that teachers can use to help students get organized and started (always so daunting for kids) in their writing. Also, he has a variety of clever suggestions that students can follow to develop their content. He even has a fun way to teach punctuation. In fact, everything Charnock suggests is designed to be creative and effective: creative, because students will be learning in new and fun ways and effective because the suggestions are practical and focused on specific learning objectives. Not at all helpful
This book is very random and not at all helpful. The cut-and-paste lesson plans are based on specific topics that most likely aren't going to be relevant to the students. And besides, the students won't do the work if they know they won't be graded on it. And the worst advice was to just leave the classroom, or "walk," if the classroom gets out of control. You may as well turn in your badge because you won't be working for the district ever again.

A useful book would talk about what to do if the teacher leaves lesson plans that are too short for the time period or no lesson plans at all. Bringing in un-gradable, non-standards-based lesson plans won't cut it. It would be better to just let the kids have study period. There's more advice for the permanent teacher than the sub in the book. But even then, the writing is just random and long-winded. Don't bother with this book.

not too impressed
The problem I had with this book is that large parts of it are not directed toward the substitute teacher at all.In Chapter 3, he spent most of the time discussing what the regular classroom teacher should do for the substitute, not what the substitute should do with the plans.I have no control over what the regular teacher leaves or what the administration does, so this is not helpful to me at all.

I dropped my teeth when he suggested that if a classroom situation becomes untenable, or you start to lose control, you should "walk", that is, leave the classroom.Huh?I would never be called back to a school if I were to do that, not to mention that it strikes me as a bit cowardly.The only excuse I could think of to walk out on a class is violence, and then you're going to leave the other kids in there?No way--the pay for subs is low, but I'm a mom as well as a teacher.

Some of the advice was good, but overall it's not a useful book.

Not reccommended
A substitute teacher has rules to follow, and the first and main rule is one.STAY IN THE CLASSROOM. Stay with the class, never leave them alone.A book that advises a substitute to leave the classroom is one that is suspect, if not dangerous.It exposes a sub who follows that advice to legal liability and possibly criminal negligence should such advice be followed.

In addition to that poor advice the book's lesson plans are a copy-and-paste job, repetitious and dull, and the book tends to be steeped in a political correctness that will not age well.

Substitute Teaching Survival Guide
This book has many specific suggestions and good lesson plans.I found it very useful!

Fairly useful
This book is divided into two sections. The first is advice for substitute teachers. It is very useful if you are a brand new sub and have never taught before. The second section is sample lesson plans, in case the teacher doesn't leave you one. I have a couple problems with the plans, in that most of the classes in my district are block periods, whereas these are set up to be 45-50 minutes. You could do a couple of them, but I have the feeling that the kids would be bored and quit paying attention to you. They also seem irrelevant to me, unless you were able to find a plan that fit in with where the class was at the time. I think a better backup substitute plan would be an age-appropriate video, and then use this book if you can't use the video. I realize that it is better to teach the kids something, but sometimes you gotta cut your losses. If the class is unruly a video is going to work a lot better than plans from this book. However, it is definitely a resource that I bring with me just in case, and since it's not too expensive, I think it's a worthwhile investment for a new substitute teacher. ... Read more

Nice resource for teachers
This book will provide teachers with numerous options for teaching vocabulary. In addition, there are three options for each type of vocabulary instruction.

Great for 4th to 7th - MUST for Sp. Ed
This packet includes reproducible graphic organizers and a description/lesson ideas on how to use them (one section for each type).

What is nice about these is that they lay out what you want your kids to learn in a clear, easy to follow way. Some of the organizers are fairly free form, leaving lots of room for improvisation, and some are highly structured. These are absolutely excellent for struggling learners.

These are geared for teachers; however these can be easily adapted for home use. For example, my son comes home with vocabulary words that he must know each week. I use these organizers to help him 1) learn the spelling, 2) learn the meaning, and 3) use them in a sentence. Left to his own, he would feel lost; however several of these organizers easily adapt to helping him study this on his own.

Reading instructors will appreciate the organizers which place emphasis on writing down words that students don't know (like a log) or new vocab words from the text and inferring the meaning from the context clues.

In summary, these organizers teach important study skills that will translate into other areas of study. Highly recommended!

Every teacher should have a copy
This is an excellent book for any practising teacher. We all know "content" is required to be taught by syllabi and we all know students simply memorize, re-gurgitate and forget such content.

Ted McCain shows you how to deliver content in ways the students will remember and by which they will acquire problem-solving skills as well - the skills needed by our students for the "real world".

The other beauty of this book is its size - you can absorb the contents and start using the ideas within a week.Yet, you can return after a module and refine your practice further.I sincerely believe it made me a better teacher even after 15 years teaching experience.

Rethinking Pedagogy
Teaching for Tomorrow is a quick (90 page) book that lays out a great rationale for changing pedagogy towards real-world project-based-learning where the teacher steps away from "telling" mode. Chapter one is "How I discovered I was a highly educated useless person." Then McCain outlines six proposals that would help schools create graduates who are not "useless": 1) resisting the tempatation to "tell" 2) providing context to content, 3) fostering independent thinking, 4) moving to problem solving, 5) withdrawing from helping students, & 6) reevaluating evaluation. Along the way he touches on the importance of failing and how we learn more from mistakes than from success. The author is a technology coordinator and he provides several examples for the kinds of role-playing problems solving that he is advocating, but this is not a book about technology. I identified with McCain's story that described how he felt like he didn't have real world skills after graduating from his university. He argues that schools currently are good at giving students "school skills" but they don't give students real-world skills. His six proposals are not new, and they are included in educational degrees for teachers, but the reality in many classrooms is that these approaches are not used. By and large, we are still using a curriculum defined by text books and focused on preparation for high-stakes tests. McCain recognizes the importance of accountability and testing but suggests that there is more value in a pedagogical approach that creates real-world skills while still delivering the content we want students to absorb.

My only criticism of the book is it doesn't go into the dynamics of a classroom of 20+ students. He has some good examples of role-playing and problem-solving scenarios that you can easily imagine a group of 3-4 students excelling at, but classroom management of this approach for 20 students becomes more complex.
